CHAPTER 16 “Susannah?” Gloria asked when she got back home. “Still want some tea?” No answer. She set the animal crackers on the counter and made her way down the hall. Kitty was sound asleep in bed. Gloria knocked on her daughter’s door. “You awake?” Susannah opened it and held up her finger. “All right, Ricky,” she was saying to her phone. “Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve got to go now, but I’ll see you tomorrow.” She ended the call, a look of both amusement and triumph in her eyes. “Who was that?” Gloria asked, a sinking, guilty feeling settling in her gut. “That was Ricky Fields. We’re going out for lunch after VBS tomorrow.” Gloria sighed. “I wish you hadn’t done that, honey.” “What? Is this my mother talking? You’ve been trying to set the two of us up for years now.
