Chapter 8 The lowering sun brought out the first hint of golden leaves on the cottonwoods as Jase drove his new Toyota Tacoma pickup along the winding highway. He didn’t drive too fast, although he no longer needed to look for signs. He didn’t think he’d ever forget that spot, just before a bridge, where a dirt road dove off the side of the highway and meandered along the creek. In the back of his truck, the remnants of his old life that he couldn’t quite dump filled a half-dozen boxes, and another five or six held things he thought might be necessary in his new one. Only time would tell if it would work out or not. His heart speeded up as he steered off the pavement and braked down the steep, short slope.
