Checkmate the Queen

ERYN’S third glass of whisky almost kicked her hard inside but she can still manage. Nang inalok siya ng muli ng bartender ay umiling na ito. She shouldn’t let herself get drunk in this kind of place.

Upon knowing Kalix’s favorite place, Eryn tried and came here in a rush with the hope of coming up with another scheme for Kalix. She’s indeed progressing with her plans but she must not underestimate Kalix. He got his attention but it’s only a matter of time before Kalix might divert his attention to other woman.

“You’re new here, right?” napapitlag si Eryn nang maramdaman niyang mayro’ng tumabi sa kanya.

“You seem to know a lot of girls here,” sumilay ang ngiti sa labi ni Eryn. Ilang segundo na ang nakalipas ngunit napansin niyang hindi pa rin inaalis ng lalaki ang kanyang titig sa kanya. Base on how he looks he’s on his 30s. Nakasuot ito ng dark red suit at hindi naman na maipagkakailang may hitsura ito. Hindi naman na ito ang unang nakita ni Eryn na lalaki parehas sa tindig nito. There a lot of businessmen and rich people in this bar. After all this is their playground.

Luganica Casino is place of fun for people like Kalix. The bar here attracts a lot of people.

“Yes, and you caught my attention,” sabay senyas nito sa bartender na humingi ng drinks.

“That’s cliché,” she smirked.

“I still don’t understand why you came here unprepared,” tinignan naman siya mula ulo hanggang paa ng lalaki. Ngayon lang napagtanto ni Eryn na nakasuot lang siya ng skinny black pants at sandalas. Ang pang-itaas naman niya ang puting polo.

“Siguro pinalagpas ka ng security dahil maganda ka. You see, there is a dress code here,” napatingin silang pareho sa paligid, then she realized she should’ve wear some fancy sexy dress.

“By the way I’m—”

“Mr. Martinez, I didn’t expect to see you here,” napalingon silang dalawa sa boses na iyon. She should’ve recognized that voice but she became nervous all of a sudden to see Kalix standing there.

“Yeah,” sambit lamang ng lalaking lumapit kay Eryn at dali-dali itong umalis. Hindi na nagtaka si Eryn kung bakit iyon nangyari. She has an idea what kind of person Kalix is.

“Two whisky please,” ani ni Kalix nang makaupo ito sa tabi ni Eryn. Well this is unexpected. She has to come up with a good reason if ever he’s going to ask why she is here.

“Drink it,” alok ni Kalix sa kanya nang nilapag ng bartender ang dalawang baso ng alak sa harapan nila.

“I’m good,” she refused.

“That would be my 7th glass. It will surely kick in,” he grinned as he savors the whisky in his glass.

“Why would you get another one if you know that?” iritang saad naman ni Eryn.

“I want one of us to get drunk,” mariin na napapikit si Kalix at ibinaba ang baso niya. “I’ve been staring at you from a distance. You’re almost at your limits.”

That was a straight-forward attack from him. Although she didn’t understand Kalix’s real intention of saying it face to face.

Napatitig nang matagal si Eryn sa kanyang baso. This is Kalix starting his own game. Now, what is going to be?

Without giving more time of thinking, Eryn drank the whisky in one shot. That truly kicked her hard. After a few seconds her vision started to become blurry but she’s still thinking right.

After all, the only way to beat Kalix is to play along with his game.

THE first attempt that Eryn tried to open her eyes, she saw nothing but a blurry vision. Then the second time it become clear enough to grasp the situation. Napalikwas siya ng bangon nang mapansin niyang pamilyar ang lugar sa kanya.

The dark ceilings, the night view from the giant window glass and the sound of the fountain coming from the mini garden.

“I guess you’re half sober,” her eyes stiffen as she heard the voice of the devil.

She might have passed out after drinking her fourth glass of whisky.

Tumayo si Eryn at namataan niya si Kalix na nakatayo lamang at pinagmamasdan ang pinakamamahal niyang syudad.

“Let’s play a game, Eryna.”

“What would I get?” she didn’t falter to him. Unti-unting lumingon si Kalix sa kanya.

“If you win then you can ask anything from me. If I win then…” umalingaw-ngaw ang yabag ni Kalix sa buong bahay. Bigla siyang kinilabutan habang palapit si Kalix sa kanya.

“You’ll have s*x with me, right now, right here,” his voice suddenly became serious even his glares.

“Anything huh?” she smiled a bit. “If I win then give up this city,” natahimik ng ilang segundo si Kalix. He may not be able to foresee that Eryn would ask him to bet such important thing. Gumuhit ang ngisi sa kanyang labi habang nakatitig kay Eryn. “You’re an interesting woman after all.”

“Fine. Let’s play whatever game you want,” mapanghamon na saad nito.

“We’ll play chess,” she gritted her teeth.

The preparation took a few minutes. Luckily, Kalix possessed a glass chess board. Lumiwanag ang buong living room nang sinindihan lahat ni Kalix ang ilaw. Eryn chose this game because this is what she’s good at. This is a sudden but she’s betting everything on it. This time she might be nearing on taking down Kalix.

Matagal na siyang mahilig sa chess, she’s going at full strength to beat him.

Eryna is on the white side and black side goes for Kalix. The start of the game is an offensive from Eryn. Mula kanina ay naging tahimik si Kalix. He almost took the maximum time before responding to her attacks. Kalix on the other side maintains a defense. His moves are similar to a beginner, Eryn could say that.

But the longer the game is going, the harder for her to concentrate. Kalix’s moves are very meticulous. Ni hindi niya gustong galawin ang back liners nito at mas pinipiling ginagalaw ang pawns nito. She’s having the thoughts that maybe he’s plotting on something. Her concentration is suddenly being eaten by her anxiousness. It was just a few seconds but she’s losing her pieces.

“Checkmate,” her whole body trembles as Kalix uttered that word…the very least thing she wanted to hear tonight.

She cowardly stared at the chess board to confirm the end of the game. Her queen was checked by Kalix’s king.

“P-paano…” nauutal siyang natulala.

“I’m not good with this game, that’s the truth,” he said as he crossed his legs in front of her. “I know you’re good, your moves are same with professional but your head isn’t on the game.”

“You might be thinking of me, instead of your queen,” hindi pa rin makapaniwala si Eryn at nanatiling nakatitig sa board.

“Don’t think of your enemy too much, Eryna,” his voice is playful this time. She clenched her fists as she can’t believe she was defeated in an instant.

“Think of the game,” dagdag pa nito.

“I’ll see you in my room. You’re free to use the shower room.”

Napayuko siya nang tuluyang umalis si Kalix sa kanyang harapan. She was too confident before the game started. So this is her opponent?

Ano bang klaseng tao ka, Kalix?

Nanghihinang tumayo si Eryn. Half of her is somewhat prepared for this but not so soon. Entering Kalix world would require her to submit to him. This was her decision.

“HELLO?” pumasok si Kalix sa kanyang silid upang sagutin ang tawag mula sa kanyang cellphone. Hindi sumagot ang kausap niya at nagbuntong-hininga lang ito.

“Will you attend the funeral tomorrow?” she finally speaks up. Nang binuksan ni Kalix ang kurtina sa kanyang malalaking glass windows ay dumilaw ang ngisi sa kanyang labi.

“Isn’t that insulting the dead?” he grinned.

“Still, he’s your father’s personal assassin.”

“We’ll see about that,” pinatay naman kaagad ni Kalix ang tawag. Napahigpit ang hawak ni Kalix sa kanyang cellphone sa isa niyang kamay at napatingin siya sa kanyang isang kamay.

“If this is a chess game, Dad… how many pieces do you still have?” napaigting ang panga niya at napakuyom ang kanyang palad.

Muli siyang napadungaw sa flower vase malapit sa bintana. Nalanta na naman ang mga bulaklak at nakalimutan niya itong papalitan. It felt like Ciarra is knocking his heart whevene he sees those withered flowers.

As he closed his eyes, the very first time he met Ciarra appeared on his mind five years ago…

For the past few days, Kalix has been enjoying the beach and its isolated area. Maaga siyang gumigising at naglalakad sa tabing dagat dahil walang katao-tao ro’n, until one morning that changed.

She saw a woman walking towards the waves of the sea. At first he thought that she’s just enjoying it but then he noticed that she’s aiming for something.

“That’s not the proper way to die,” untag nito sa babaing gulat na lumingon sa kanya. Just when their eyes met, Kalix knew then that this woman…is empty.

“You put a gun to your head and you pull the trigger,” he said frankly. Bagsak ang balikat ng babaing naglakad palapit sa kinaroroonan ni Kalix.

“You can ask me to do it if you want,” mungkahi pa ni Kalix. He didn’t expect that smile from her. Kasabay nang unti-unting pag-angat ng araw ay ang pagsilay ng ngiti ng babaing iyon. It’s a lot brighter than the sun…but her eyes destroys its radiant.

“I see, you’re just like me,” she nodded while glaring at him. “I’m the worst,” he dodged her stares.

“So what’s your story? Let me hear it,” naramdaman naman ni Kalix na umupo sa buhangin ang babae.

“Telling it to a stranger wouldn’t change much but…it’s helpful…at least if you plan to die just like me then it’s good to tell your story,” pangungumbinsi pa nito. He was unconsciously smiling. This is the first girl who made her smile just like this.

“I’m planning to kill my father and I’m killing his allies one by one,” napatigil kaagad si Kalix at napayuko.

Naabutan ni Eryn si Kalix na nakapikit sa harapan ng bintana. After taking a bath she went directly to his room. She’s a bit calm right now because she isn’t that weak anymore. If Kalix wants to play just like this then he’d better bring it on, because in this game, she will win.

“What do you think of a person who kills their own parent?” nagulat naman si Eryn nang biglang nagsalita si Kalix, he must have sensed her presence.

“They’re evil,” she answered.

Napatango lang si Kalix na humarap kay Eryn. “Worse than evil, right?” he agreed.

“Strip for me,” namilog mga mata ni Eryn sa sinabi nito. She had the slightest doubt about Kalix’s condition. She wanted to slap herself for even thinking that.

“You’re not wearing anything underneath that robe, right?” the tone of his voice shifted immediately. Kalix’s smiles in between makes her thrilled even more. She’s really doing this. She’s making her own enemy take an important thing from her.

Napailing-iling siya. Humugot siya ng napakalalim na hininga. She wanted to snap out of her self and grasp the real situation.

This isn’t just a game anymore…This is a war against her and Kalix.

“Show me your body. Please my eyes,” he sat down on his single couch beside the window as he crossed his legs. His attention is solely on her.

Eryn grabbed the tie of her rob with her trembling hands and she untied it. Slowly, she unravels her body in front of him.

“Despite of the fierce look in your face, your body seems to be pure,” his face is mesmerized. “If that’s so then, I’ll taint your pure body.”
