Chapter 10 : Pain*

Jamie was about a quarter of the way home when she started to hear the bustle and panic of people. She turned her to find out what people were shouting about.

“Get out of the way, the Lord’s horse is loose!” The Baker shouted.

 A battalion of men was camped on the outskirts of Fairbridge. They had gone to the plans of Arna to buy horses and dogs that would be trained for use in the army. Arna horses were intelligent and wild, both attributes made them incredible battle horses. They could do as much damage as four trained soldiers.

Jamie saw the locals run to the side trying to find cover, a little boy was in the middle of the road shouting “Mama!“

 Time seemed to slow down for Jamie, she saw the large black Stallion with crazy black eyes speeding down the road. He was heading straight for the boy! Jamie did not even think she ran to the boy and shielded him. The Stallion reared, screeching and wildly pawing the air. The little boy started to cry and Jamie was suddenly annoyed. 

“How dare this horse scare an innocent child?” Jamie thought.

“ You stop that this instant! Can’t you see you are scaring the boy? What is wrong with you!” Jamie shouted annoyed.

To her surprise, the Stallion stopped and looked quizzically at Jamie.

“ You need to calm down, how would your Ma feel seeing you act like this?” Jamie said scolding the black Stallion. 

The Stallion bowed its head and looked ashamed. It huffed and slowly moved towards Jamie. She instantly put her hand out and stroked the stallion’s silky mane. 

“See now, that is so much better isn’t it?” Jamie cooed. The Stallion closed his eyes in pleasure.

“Well, what do we have here?” Jamie looked up and saw an expensively dressed man. 

The man had dark brown straight hair, blue eyes and a small mouth that looked quick to smile. He had a slightly beaked nose, which a lot of the gentry had in Riverswell. He was dressed In a dark blue military jacket, with gold buttons and black slacks. He stood tall at 6 feet, with broad shoulders and a slim body. the man looked to be around 19 or 20 and was incredibly good looking. Jamie bowed her head in respect.

The man continued and said “Anyone being able to stop a trained Arna War Stallion who is bonded is unheard of! Even my Stable Master cannot touch him! But here you are a little Kitten, scolding him like some wayward pup!”

“I meant no disrespect, Sir!” Jamie said quickly. Rich people could be funny and she did not want to make an enemy.

“Actually it is Lord, Lord Raoul of River’s Point.” The Man said.

Jamie and the surrounding people gasped. River’s Point was a coastal area to the east of the Capital. It was famous for its’ ports and wealth. This made Lord Raoul was one of the most favoured and wealthiest men in the whole Realm!

“I apologise Lord Raoul!” Jamie stammered.

“There is no need to apologise, but I would like you to lift your head and answer my question. How did you get to get Black Winter to stop mid-attack?“ Raoul asked.

Jamie slowly lifted her head and opened her eyes. Lord Raoul gasped and whispered, “Goddess be praised, who are..?“

Black Winter suddenly screamed a warning and bared his teeth at a woman approaching the boy.

 “Oh stop it! There is no need, it is the poor boy’s Mother!” Jamie snapped. Black Winter instantly went quiet and calm. 

The boy shouted “Mama!” and ran into the young women’s arms.

 “Praise the Gods of Light you are safe, don’t you ever run away from Mummy again!” The woman smiled and said “thank you” to Jamie. Jamie smiled back and the young walked away slowly.

“As touching as this is, we need to get home now. Unless you want another Beating from your lovely Aunt!” Fluff mind-linked. 

“s**t he is right!” Jamie thought. She turned to the Lord, “ I sincerely apologise my Lord, but I must leave your presence now.” Jamie then turned her tail and ran, followed by a large black cat.

Lord Raoul watched her run and said “Sam?”

“Yes, my Lord?“ A personal guard said as he stepped forward.

“Follow her and find out everything you can!” Raoul ordered.

“Yes my Lord, right away!” Sam ran off in the direction that the young girl and the cat.

“Black Winter get back to the stable. You caused enough trouble for one day!” Raoul ordered.

Black Winter turned around and tried to bite one of the guards. Luckily the guard was wise to his tricks and jumped out of the way.

“Black Winter!” Lord Raul warned. Black Winter sighed in defeat and started to walk back.

15 hours later

Jamie has managed to get back unnoticed by Aunty Judith. Uncle Tyrone had to visit a new brewery and was staying overnight. Jamie sighed, she had managed to get all her chores done and was now serving some of the regular customers. 

Suddenly, the door opens and a group of four strangers walks in. Jamie gasped as she recognised one of the strangers as Lord Raoul. Aunty Judith must have smelt money because she had come out of the back. 

“My Lord! My Lord! What a nice surprise! Welcome to my humble establishment!” Aunty Judith then curtsied to insure Lord Raoul had a good view of her ample breasts. Jamie rolled her eyes and continued to clear some dishes. 

“You are too kind Mistress, may we partake in some food and Mead? I am desperate for some home-cooked food after being on the road for so long!” Lord Raoul said respectfully.

“Of course, course My Lord! Please sit, sit and call me Judy everyone does!” Judy was guided to some seats. “What can I get my Lord and Gentleman?”

“Please Mistress do not trouble yourself. We are perfectly alright with your normal Serving Maid.” Raoul said casually.

“What, Jamie?“ Aunt Judith said in surprise. 

“Jamie? “ Lord Raoul said softly. 

Sam had done a great job and found where the mystery girl and cat lived. He was shocked to hear that she lived in a loft over a stable, that she was worked to the bone, starved and beaten. This annoying woman had no idea how gifted her Serving Maid was and he knew her name!

“Oh you don’t want her, she is just a stray my husband took in!” Aunty Judith dismissively. 

Lord Raoul frowned he was not used to not getting what he wanted.

 Aunt Judith panicked and said, “Of course she will serve your drinks, whilst I prepare you today’s special!” She clicked her fingers and ordered “ Jamie, four meads for the Lord and his friends!"

Jamie poured out four meads out into clean cups and took them over to the table. 

“Hello, little Kitten, nice to see you again!” Lord Raoul said with a big smile.

“You have met before?” Said Aunt Judith said in a strained voice.

“Oh yes, we met this morning!” Lord Raoul said happily staring directly at Jamie.

“I see. Well, I can only apologise for any disrespect or rudeness that you may have suffered, my Lord. I can only ask for forgiveness and a sure you that she will learn her place!” Aunty Judith said. It was clear she was pissed and Jamie knew she was going to get it. 

“My Lord actually wants to offer Kit...Jamie a job.” A guard said quickly. He could see what was going to happen later.

“Yes Sam, thank you. Of course, you will be very compensated.” Lord Raoul said smoothly. Lord Raoul was hoping to play to her greed.

“Why would you want her?“ Aunty Judith eyes narrowed and were full of suspicion.

“I am not used to be questioned about my attentions...” Lord Raoul growled.

“I apologise my Lord. Let me go and get your food then we can discuss things in more detail. Jamie would you please come with me?” Aunty Judith asked.

Jamie followed her Aunt into the back. As soon as she was in the kitchen she felt a sharp smack across her face. Her head banged her head into the wall and she saw stars.

“You little f*****g w***e! How dare you leave the house without my permission? What did you do to the Lord? Did you suck his c**k?” Aunty Judith screamed. She continued “After all we have done for you! You ungrateful b***h, you will clean this kitchen and go to bed. You will not step out into that pub, do you understand me?“

Judith dishes out four bowls of stew and storms out of the kitchen. Jamie turned and picked up a scrubbing brush..it was going to be a long night.

3 hours later

Jamie was tired, she had scrubbed the kitchen from top to bottom. She had not seen Fluff all night and all she wanted to do was go to bed. She walked slowly to the stable and was about to climb the ladder. She felt a large hand at the back of her neck. It squeezed down hard.
