*** I wasn’t sure what world I should inhabit when thereception for Nick Ritter began. If it had been a gala event, I might have lostmyself amidst the gaiety and a crowd of people. But the intimacy of thisprivate event pitted my two worlds together in a prescription for disaster. Geoff, whoI’d invited long before my afternoon in bed with Nick—just so he could protectme from the man—was immediately aware of my inner turmoil. He hadn’t seen mequite so nervous since my last egregious error in judgment. After nearly twoweeks of suspicious behavior, I did nothing to settle his concerns when hewalked through the museum entrance and I stared at him wide-eyed in panic. I’dtotally forgotten that he’d be coming. “You looksurprised?” he said. “I’m justnot used to seeing you here.
