Alpha's Vigilante Mate

Note The story is set in a modern world. Traditional mates are long gone, wolves are able to choose their own mates and are free to date and that is how most bonds form. Wolves can however imprint on potential mates but where un reciprocated,the imprint gradually wears off. Humans and wolves inhabit the current planet. R's POV Unknown Location 2300hrs 14 Years before present day. Year 2096 I was used to the darkness and silence that my small cell offered. It was the only home I had known for as long as I could remember. A change in schedule being when the human guards came to either feed me or take me for the periodical tests that I never understood what purpose they served. This was just another day among the many countless ones. I retreated to my happy place, a world that I had created in my mind as an escape. This time I was on a field playing with my friends, feeling the grass beneath my feet, in my pink dress as I ran towards a pair of swings, my mother calling out my name. Ryan. I had no recollection of where I had gotten it but that was the name I had for myself in this world. This was how I had survived all these years. Living in my head, in my own world, where I was happy. My perfect daydream was interrupted by a pair of footsteps followed by a series of cries. I ignored them, thinking it was just another one of us who had been brought in and it was their first day. They would get used to it...I had. Not recalling the last time I had shed a tear. The footsteps did not falter but continued approaching my room till they were right in front of it. Someone struggled with a bunch of keys,finally getting the right one as the lock clicked before the door was finally opened. The corridor light poured into the room, forcing my eyes to adjust to it. At the door stood X, my partner during cleaning duty, who I had met on the rare times we were let out of our rooms to interact with the other children. “Come with me,” he requested, the urgency in his voice evident, while he peered outside the corridors as if he waited for someone to come through them. “ It's not duty time,” I argued, clearly confused. Where had he gotten the keys from? What was going on? The unmistakable metallic scent of blood hit my nose and I took a careful look at him. His uniform was soaked in blood. " I am not going anywhere with you,'' I whispered. He was clearly breaking the rules and we would get punished. The chair for 'bad boys and bad girls' a reminder of what happened to anyone who disobeyed. No one had ever tried to escape, that thought was never in our minds. We had no idea of who our parents were and what our real name was or anything in general about ourself. Just that one's name was a specific alphabet, nothing more. I was 'R'. "We can finally get out of here R. We can be free. Be normal children like everyone else,'' he replied pleadingly, and the promise of a taste of normal life was enough for me to take my leap of faith. This was my chance to make it out of the four walls I had known as home. Experience what I had always imagined for years and watched in the educational films that we got the rare opportunity to see about the outside world. Taking my hand gently in his, he dragged me through the corridors. They were littered with blood, lifeless bodies lying around, while many of the rooms which were always occupied were open. I wanted to ask what had happened, but with the pace at which X was dragging me I was barely catching my breath. Suddenly, the alarms began to shriek and the lights flashed while an announcement was made through the speakers. Behind us, a guard was coming at us at full speed, our small feet barely fast enough to gather more ground. " Go, I will find you,'' X urged me on while stopping and turning to wait for the guard who was quickly closing in on us.I tried to refute his request but he continued pushing me forward with clear desperation in his eyes. '' Okay,'' I responded weakly in a whispered breath before running to the closest door that, luckily, was unlocked and led to the outside of the building. Once I made it out, I ran without looking back. My little feet trying to cover as much ground as they could. Outside, the rain was pouring heavily, streaks of lightning flashing through the sky, the drops blinding me, but I did not stop or look back. All I could hear were the wails of sirens and barking of dogs that were in the distance.
