Chapter 1 “Damn you’re good! I’m so glad I was in that chat room when I was that day! I would have hated to miss out on you, so what do you say? To have, and raise a family of his own, but things went to the left when his relationship with his longtime girlfriend, Courtney Ashton did not work out. The two met in September of 2011 and started to date fairly quickly after that. After six-years of heavy dating, the two had plans to marry the upcoming year. After a few days, he quickly became bored with playing pool and video games, he was really missing his baby and was counting down the days for her return. One day, after being defeated in a game of NBA 2K18, and almost destroying the expensive controller by throwing it against the wall in frustration, his friend stopped by to visit and have a few drinks. Instead of being social however, Chris was busy laughing at his phone and scrolling non-stop at whatever it was that was keeping his attention on the screen. Chad, wanting this type of entertainment for himself, asked his friend what was so funny that kept his constant attention. Not being a part of any social media platform, Chad could not understand what could possibly be so hilarious, or that entertaining through a phone. This unfortunately, was the beginning of the end of Chad’s relationship. After a few hours, he had signed up for multiple social media platforms, and began to learn how to navigate each one with Chris’ help. What Chad thought would be some weekend entertainment until Courtney arrived back home, turned into an obsession that would hold him tight in its grips, refusing to let go. Courtney now found herself in competition with a world that was beyond her reach, or control, and she refused to be second best to strangers, and the skanky females that she now saw all through his phone leaving private messages and commenting on his post. Courtney let Chad know on many occasions how what he was now into was affecting her, but her worries soon fell on deaf ears, until one day, she was not there anymore. As Chad finished with his shower, he thought of Courtney, and how he had messed things up with her. He wished that he were never introduced to the world of social media. He tried to no avail to salvage the relationship, but Courtney was not having it once she saw how attached he still was to this new world. After a few months had passed, he started to see her around town with a new man and it broke him to the core, he knew that he had f****d up for good, but he still had hope that one day they would be together again. After Courtney, no other women held his eye long enough for him to even consider having a relationship with, other than just one of a s****l nature. In his mind, he knew at some point she would come around. Sadly, during this time his obsession only deepened more with social media, it became his outlet and the further away she drifted the deeper he dived into this make-believe world. He began to meet many women and started to explore the many options, and varieties of women that were readily available at his fingertips. This led him to dating sites, which were more commonly known as hook up sites, or smash sites depending on who you talked to. Chad began to do things that he had never done before. Randomly hooking up with women. His DM was filled with messages from thirsty females that were down for whatever. The temptations proved to be too much for Chad to resist, but he was always upfront with everyone that he met and hooked up with. He was very vocal of the fact that he was not looking for a relationship. Deep down, he was still in love with Courtney, and hoped they would have their time again, but for now, Chad was enjoying being young, handsome, successful, and single. As Chad laced up his shoes to head out, his phone buzzed, alerting him that he had an incoming message. Chris is interesting in going to an event near you tomorrow his f*******: message read. “Oh s**t!” Chad said aloud as he read on. “Hell yeah! The 21st Annual Sigma Xi Scholarship Ball! I’m in that b***h!” Chad exclaimed as he clicked the interested button as well, alerting all his friends that he would also be in attendance. Both Chad and Chris were members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which was hosting the event to provide scholarships to African American college bound men within the Urbana, Champaign, Rantoul, and Danville areas of Illinois. Although this was a meaningful event, it was also an Omega Psi Phi party, and Chad knew what came along with that… beautiful women, and lots of them! As Chad ordered Alexa to turn the lights off before heading out, he turned to take a quick look inside, making sure everything was in order for the guest he would be expecting that night.
