Angelique went home when she saw that the sun was already setting. She knew her mother’s already worried at this time. Her mother was still afraid of the dark, because of the trauma of her past, and she always told Angelique to go home before dark.
No students could be seen on the school premises, and that was a good sign for her, to be out of trouble again. She knew her mother would ask about her clothes, but she always made up an alibi that her mother believed in. She didn’t want to lie, but she did not have a choice. In her mind, she’s doing it all for her mother’s sake.
She walked fast, as long as she could with her fat body. There were things she noticed with herself even though she’s fat; first, she’s strong enough to carry heavily loaded sacks of vegetables or fruits, second is she can move fast, then she doesn’t easily get tired, and her eyesight is so clear even at night or dark. She didn’t know how it happened, but it is a big help to her family and her work on the farm. They’re not paying anyone to do the labor, she did it all by herself.
She continued walking. She walked fast on the dirt road. No one will walk on the path except her cousins. She knew her cousins were already home at that time of the day.
But she was wrong.
A fast-approaching roar of a car coming her way, without hesitation to hit her. She knew it was her cousin by the noise of the car and by the laughing voices. She moved fast so she won't be hit. But, she also jumped on the dirt on the roadside.
She heard how her cousins laughed at her. She gritted her teeth to stop herself from being mad. She remembered her mother’s words. “Don't let emotions eat you up, ‘cause it might destroy you. But instead, use that emotion to know what is the best decision to be made. Use it, don’t let it use you.” Remembering those, she calmed herself down.
When she was done calming herself, she cleaned herself a little and continued her walk home. Her mother is a worrywart towards her, and she can’t blame her mother for that because she’s her only child. Maybe they may think she’s spoiled and all she wants easily catered to her, also a reason why some are jealous of her, but it didn’t happen. She worked for every cent she has.
She saw her mother sitting in the foyer, waiting for her. A smile broke on her lips seeing her mother. She couldn’t help but felt love.
Without her thinking, her body moved on its own. She ran fast to her mother’s waiting arms.
“Oh, God! You made me worry, my sweet child!” Susan exhaled releasing all the pressure she felt a while ago. Just like what Angelique thought, she was really worried.
“I am sorry, Mama. I didn’t notice that it is already late. I got distracted when I went to my friend,” she said without shuttering. She hugged her mother closer, inhaling the sweet vanilla scent. It gave comfort and warmth to her.
Susan pulled out from the hug and made a small distance between them. She saw how dirty her child’s clothes were.
“How did this happen? Are you hurt?” Susan asked worriedly.
“I’m fine, Mama. I just slipped on the dirt road going home,” she told her mother another lie. She was used to it that she didn’t even blink.
“Next time, be careful, Honey. For mama, please?” Susan told her, and her eyes saw how sad she was, it was like she knew what was happening to her. But she pushed it aside and answered her mother.
“I will, Mama. So, don’t worry too much. I can take care of myself. I’m a big girl now,” Angelique said while showing her fat to her mother, which made Susan laugh.
“Okay. Okay!” Susan surrendered, still laughing. “Let’s go inside and eat our dinner. I know how hungry you are right now,” Susan joked.
“Ma! You really know me,” she agreed. They both laughed, hugging her mama, walking inside.
Her grandparents were there, sitting in the heart of the living room, hugging and reading something in the newspaper. When they saw Angelique, they both smiled at her. Angelique greeted them with a kiss on their cheeks.
“Good that you are here. We just read the news in a newspaper, saying that there’s a killer roaming here in our place. We can’t ever be sure of the people we encounter day by day. So, be careful, sweetie,” her grandmother reminded her.
“She’s right. Be careful, always! The killer brutally killed his victim that almost no one could recognize them,” seconded by her grandfather.
“Yes, Grandmama, Grandpapa,” she told them with an assuring smile.
“They’re right, Honey. Killer or no killer, always be careful.” Her mama joined them, hugging her and kissing her head before she looked in her eyes. “I love you, Honey.” She sincerely and heartedly told her daughter.
“I love you too, Mama,” she answered back and looked at her grandparents too. ”I love you, Grandmama and Grandpapa.”
“We love you, too, Sweetie.” Her grandmother answered for both of them.
“Okay. Let’s stop this emotional conversation, and let’s eat. I know you will love what I cooked for you. It’s your favorite." Eyes sparkled and a bigger smile broke on Angelique's face as she heard those.
"Really, Mama?” she exclaimed, showing how excited she is.
“Yes.”
When Angelique heard this, she ran fast to the kitchen, leaving her family behind. They just laughed at how Angelique cheered up.
“Clean yourself first, Angelique!” Susan yelled.
“Okay, Mama!” Angelique said back then they heard Angelique’s footsteps going everywhere. Her mother just shook her head while laughing.
“Let’s go.” Susan’s mother called for her to go to the dining to prepare. Susan followed as her father cleaned up their little messy living room.
It didn’t take long for them to prepare their dinner, as at the same time Angelique and her grandfather finished what they were doing.
They all sat down on their respective seats, then Susan led the prayer. They all closed their eyes and concentrated on the prayer.
“Dear God, thank you for this day. Thank you for all the blessings you gave to us. Thank you for giving us another day. Thank you for the food on our table, for our strength. Please guide us to our everyday life. Please, make our loved ones strong and brave to face what’s coming in their way. We worship you, our Lord. Amen." Then they ended it with a cross.
“Let’s eat!” her grandfather told them as he got his food.
They were laughing and having a blissful evening when suddenly someone knocked on their door. Everyone has a questionable look on their faces, asking who it is because they expect no one. It was already late at night because Angelique went home late. No one came to them at this hour.
“I’ll get it. Continue…” The father of the family stood up and walked to the front door.
Suddenly, Angelique got choked because of eating so fast. “Excuse me.” She ran fast to their kitchen to take some water. She forgot to bring water to the dining. She drank the water fast and put some on the pitcher. When she was done, she walked back to the dining area.
But she stopped—shocked and trembling. Like time stopped, she couldn’t move. Her heart slowly broke into pieces. Her breath hitched and rugged. Her tears fell on their own. Her body was trembling from all the emotions she was feeling—sorrow, pain, and wrath.
A few minutes ago, she just saw her family laughing and having fun. In just a minute, everything she treasures was gone. In a blink of an eye, she saw her family’s downfall. Without knowing and she was not ready, she lost the people she loved.
The pitcher she held fell, breaking into pieces. It also broke the silence of the night.
She saw her grandfather leaning on the doorframe, with an open eye and lifeless. Her grandmother was on its chair, head on the table and she knew that it was already lifeless based on her pale skin. Then her mother... her mother, being beaten and the monster with red eyes got a chunk of the flesh on her mother’s neck.
She saw how the life of her mother sucked away from her. Anger crawled all over her body, her body that moves on its own.
“No!” she screamed and she pushed the monster away from her mother. The monster let go of her mother that she easily caught before she fell down on the ground. “Mama!” she screamed, shaking her mother, but her mother just smiled and slowly closed her eyes. But before death took her, her words echoed in her ears.
“Love, my Angel.”
“Nooo!” she screamed with too much pain. Her body trembled while hugging her Mama’s dead body. Her Mama was so pale and her beauty was gone. The wound on her neck kept on bleeding.
She hugged her mother while she sat on the floor. Tears streamed from her eyes like there’s no tomorrow. Sorrow could be smelled on the air, that drenched with blood.
But her sorrow was cut short when a demonic laugh came from the guy who killed her family; or rather a monster. “You’re already too late, fat ugly worthless girl!” He taunted her and at the same time insulting. “I should have killed you before you were born. I never thought that I will have a worthless firstborn. But don’t worry, your suffering will end soon.”
Hearing those words, something clicked on Angelique’s mind screaming revenge. She couldn’t accept what she heard. She didn’t know where her strength and courage came from. But she stood up, with her trembling body, her eyes burning from hatred and sorrow.
“You do not have the right to do this!” She cried out on him while looking at the ground, him facing her back.
“This is life, fat girl. You can be prey to the world of predators or be the predator… and I chose the latter,” he told her like it’s nothing. Then he sat down on her grandfather’s chair.
“What are you?” she asked without facing her.
“You know,” and he paused, “it is a bad manner when you are speaking to someone and not facing them.” He tried to give a lesson to Angelique who didn’t move. “But since you won’t be seeing the sun tomorrow, I will let it pass and I’ll tell you what I am. I’m a mythical creature they called..." he paused that added suspense to the situation. Then, in a blink of an eye, he was already on Angelique’s back. “Werewolf,” he whispered to the unmoving girl.
In a few seconds, no one dared to move. Until the guy was ready to sink his fangs into Angelique’s neck and took her life. He became furry and hideous that Angelique saw on the side of her eyes. Before he could do anything, Angelique moved her body like it had its own mind.
She easily side-kicked the guy, throwing him to the living room and destroying all things on the way. She has this strength coming from within, but she didn’t know how it happened. She heard what the guy said but she won’t believe him.
The guy got surprised by the sudden attack, but his surprise turned to excitement. “This is the first time someone has fought me and actually hit me, and she’s my daughter. I should be proud, but I’m not,” he said with a smirk on his face.
But before he could react, Angelique was already on his front, her knuckle was connected to his stomach. However, the guy was much older and stronger than her so it didn’t affect him even a small dent.
“You can’t put me down with just your baby punch!” With just a second, Angelique flew back to the kitchen. Small damage on the room, big damage to Angelique.
She tried to stand up but she couldn’t even move yet when the guy was already on her front. He held her collar and threw her to the wall near them.
He kept on throwing Angelique and the girl couldn’t fight her. She was full of bruises, broken bones, and she was unevenly breathing.
The unknown guy held her on her collar. With just one eye, Angelique saw her father. They have the same features but their eyes were different. She got her eyes from her mother.
“You are worthless. I don't need an heiress like you. You’re just a waste of space!” he said and without remorse, he slit Angelique’s throat. It bled so hard and she choked on her blood. Angelique knew she couldn’t escape death.
The guy smirked seeing his daughter bleeding on his feet. Without any more work to do, he walked out of the house. He heard some howled nearby. He couldn’t stay any longer. But before he goes, he lit up a cigarette and threw it on the gas he dumped earlier.
He ran away. Away from a blazing fire of his sin.
