Chapter 4: when the eyes meet
Esme could hear the voices in her head, not clear, incoherent jumbles. she had always imagined the voices in her head to be feminine and not masculine like the ones she was currently hearing.
"You smell like one of them." the first voice said and she frowned.
Did she smell?
"And you have the pricky attitude like the rest of your type." the second answered. She had had internal battles with herself all the time but this was nothing like it.
She struggled to open her eyes, ignoring the slight pain in the side of her head, her eyes landed on the two male figures standing in the room.
The tension in the room was high and dangerous as the two stared down at each other. They were not aware that she was now awake watching them intently until she spoke up.
"What is going on?" she asked and Jason turned to her with a smile plastered on his face.
"Hey, baby. You're awake." he cooed leaning down to her level to examine her face. "How are you? What happened? I was worried." He added molding her face with his palms.
"I'm fine." she leaned into his touch. "I just-" she paused when she noticed how intently the new guy was glancing at her.
"I-" she stuttered her eyes scanned the room for the creature but she doesn't find it anywhere in sight.
"How long was I out for?" she asked instead.
"Forty minutes." the new guy answered his eyes glued to her face.
"Oh." was all she could say, rubbing her temple lightly.
"Can you remember what happened? A bit of something, did you see something?" Jason interrogated.
She frowned swinging her feet off the bed gently. How did he know that she saw something? Did the new guy tell him? Her gaze landed on the guy who was scowling at her boyfriend.
"You shouldn't bombard her with questions like that. You should give her some time to put her thoughts together." He said.
Jason hissed at Kyle his eyes glaring daggers at him.
"She's just fine.." he turned to Esme, clutching her hands in his. "You're alright, yea?" he asked and she nodded.
"Yeah I'm fine," she muttered. Her clutch on his palms tightened as she stood to her feet, sure that she could now walk on her own, she let go.
"Miss Lucy, can she leave?" Jason asked the nurse who looked up from a piece of paper in her hand.
"Yea, if she's feeling okay, she can leave," she answered her eyes studying Esme.
"See. You're free to go." Jason smiled pulling her close to him in a side hug and placing a kiss on her head.
A small smile covered her lips, she felt like something was oddly wrong. It felt like the two guys knew each other and they were leaving out some information.
"Have you guys met before?" She asked her gaze shifting from Jason to Kyle.
"No," Kyle responded.
"Yes."
They answered simultaneously. Kyle answered with a straight face, while Jason scowled at him. She frowned, what precisely were they keeping.
"Kyle and I met just now." Jason resolved his eyes fixated on him. "I Had to know the selfless guy who helped you get here." he finished with his face in a tight smile.
"Thank you, Kyl..e" she mumbled, his name felt oddly enticing on her lips.
"Yea...thank you, Kyle," Jason muttered sarcastically and Esme hit his chest.
"Be nice," she whispered.
"Stay safe Esme, wouldn't want to be the one bringing you to the infirmary all the time now," Kyle smirked walking out of the room leaving the three of them.
Esme pursed her lips. It wasn't lunch yet and she had the most dramatic day of her entire life. She stared at Jason whose eyes were focused on the door which kyle had just passed.
"You okay babe?" she asked and he turned to her. His frown straightened out and he smiled widely, his dimple coming into light.
"Of course," he said leaning in to kiss her lips.
She doesn't complain this time, allowing his lips to plunge into hers, it was sappy but she didn't care, she just needed a brief pull from today's events.
"Okay young loves, no PDA in my office, or anywhere in the school, get out." Lucy shooed them away causing them to break apart.
"Wait, Esme before you go can I see you for a minute?" Lucy asked and Jason fixated his gaze on Lucy.
"Sure," Esme answered casually holding onto Jason's arm.
"Alone." Lucy emphasized, her eyes moving to Jason who looked like he was going to decline.
"I'm -"
"Sure." Esme cuts him off. "Jason, please wait for me outside, I'll be outside soon." Esme pleaded.
His gaze flickered between the two, suspicion lingering in his eyes as he eyed the nurse.
"Fine.' he sighed in defeat, he leaned back into her and placed a light peck on her lips.
" Don't stay too long." He smiled, his eyes glanced towards lucy who was staring at him.
She waited until the door closed and then she turned to Esme.
"Can you remember what you saw?" she asked quickly.
"What I saw?" Esme replied confused and then everything clicked in place. "It wasn't a dream then," she said lowly.
"No, it wasn't," Lucy replied.
"Wait, that means.... that means you can see them too" Esme pointed out and Lily nodded.
"Then I am not crazy." Esme's lips broke out in a nervous smile.
"You are not crazy, but-" Lucy's tone turned serious.
"You can't tell anyone what you saw, it's going to be a bit hard explaining it to them." Lucy warned her.
"Does that mean Jason too?" Esme asked quietly.
"Especially not Jason," Lucy said sternly.
"That's...Fine, I'll try my best not to say anything." She agreed.
"Miss Lucy, can I ask you a question?"
"Sure, go ahead."
"What was that thing?" Esme asked curiously.
"A ghoul," Lucy answered and Esme nodded slowly in understanding.
"Does that mean you're not human?"
"Who knows?" Lucy smirked.
