Chapter 2: What she sees
Seventeen years later
“Esme, we’re going to be late!!” Sarah yelled from downstairs.
Esme who was carefully drawing her winged eyeliner cursed as the slight derailing
“Shit.” She stared at her reflection in the mirror, her bright blue eyes staring right back.
Using a face wipe to dab the black ink, she applied another coat of lip gloss, pouting she smiled in satisfaction.
“Esme!!! Don’t let me come up there.” Sarah yelled again.
Esme sighed grabbing her back pack which was on the small table next to her bed she ran down the stairs her pony tail swinging as she moved.
Even after living in this house for seventeen years she never got used to the stairs and was out of breath by the time she got to the last step.
“Good morning honey.” Arnold greeted walking into the room, he placed a kiss to Esme forehead.
“Morning dad.” She giggled. “Late day at work?”
“Yea, I’ll be leaving by ten.” He said grabbing a cup of coffee in the kitchen.
“I’ll see you later on then?” she inquired heading towards the door.
“Most definitely. I love you.” He said but she was already outside the door.
The glossy black Mercedes pulled out of the garage while she texted on her phone.
“Get in.” her mother called over the opened windows, Esme opened the door and settled down on the leather seats.
“We’ve got less than ten minutes before the gates close.” Sarah groaned reversing out of the front porch.
“Hey alex, play Alice merton no roots”
Esme said to her phone, few seconds later the music filled the space.
The two slowly bobbed there heads to the music. With Esme singing along, she looked out of the window where she noticed another car with tint black windows driving right by their side.
She was drawn to why the car wasn’t trying to overtake or slow down, instead the driver whined down the glass.
The tanned man was wearing glasses and a black shirt, his turned to face Esme, a sly grin forming on his lips revealing a bit of his fangs.
Esme frowned, who still uses Halloween props in march, she thought.
“Esme!” sarah called out to her concerned. “You’re bleeding.” She stated.
Esme was oblivious to the dark red liquid dripping out of her nose, she opened the passenger mirror and stared at her reflection.
She reached out to touch it, wiping a bit of it on her fingers, something was off of how sticky and hot it felt against her fingers.
“Are you feeling light headed?” sarah voice breaks her out of her thought.
Shaking her head side ways, she reached for the tissue in the compartment box and wiped the blood off her nose.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” sarah asked again.
“I’m fine mom.” She assured her dabbing off the remaining trace of blood.
“Incase I or your dad don’t come to pick you up by the time you’re done….”
“I'll take the sub way." she completed. "I know mum." she said reaching for her bags at the back of the car.
The cold air seeped through her exposed legs as she exited the car, waving her mother goodbye She stood still in front of the building, clutching the straps of her back pack tightly.
This was all a new session, the last one before she heads to college, consumed by her thoughts she didn't notice the black car which came so close to her until it honked at her.
She let out a small squeal jumping away from the car as she glared up at the driver.
Her mouth went sour when she discovered it was the car from earlier, she stared as the doors opened, and a boy about her age came out.
He had jet black hair, his uniform fitting his tall frame. She watched as the boy ran his hands through his hair, unable to move away from where she stood.
He moved his head from side to side, noticing all the stares he was getting from the students who were around. His eyes caught up with Esme's, and she gasped, her breath hitching in her throat.
His eyes were dark, like the color of her mother's black winter, it was enough to make her shudder but they where enchanting.
They both stared at each other, his face was almost too perfect for a human, the sharp cheek bones, and outlined jaw line.
His lips where a dark shade of red, almost like it was blood stained.
"Hey babe." another voice greeted close by, tugging Esme into a hug. she cut eye
contact with the strange boy as she allowed herself get snuggled into the arms of the boy she had been dating for the past year, Jason Robert.
She smiled as he gazed down at her, his hazel eyes sweeps over her face. He stood a couple of inches taller than her, he leaned down placing a peck on her lips.
She could hear her friends cheering behind them as Jason peck was turning into a make out session.
She slowly pushed him away, slapping his chest playfully.
"JASON!!!!" She scolded him, not being a fan of public display of affection especially when strangers where watching.
Jason placed a quick kiss to her fore head, before moving to hold her from behind. Esme looked up, her eyes meeting the new eyes she was staring at earlier.
The new set of emotion contoured on his face showed one thing, Anger.
"Hey babe." Jason called out and she snapped her gaze towards him
"What are you staring at?" he asked and she directed her gaze back to where the boy was.
Jason followed her gaze frowning at the empty space in front of her, he turned back to her.
"I didn't know the blank space was that interesting." He teased walking past her and into the building with his friends following.
Esme stood in awe, she was sure that a second ago, the new kid was standing right there and now he was gone and so was the black car.
**********
By the time it was second period English, Esme couldn't help but groan at how tired she was.
Heading towards her English class, she walked with her friend, Nancy who was explaining how fun her vacation to Santorini was. Esme chipped in a couple of reactions to encourage Nancy to continue.
"And then this boy from no where came up to me while I was enjoying the beach sun. I almost yelled at him to go away for disturbing my peace but by the time I turned around, every vile word I wanted to spill got hitched in my throat." Nancy explained as they climbed down the stairs.
"He had the most beautiful set of blue eyes I've ever seen." she gushed tanning herself with her palms.
"Let me guess, he offered to buy you a drink and keep you company?" Esme teased and Nancy's eyes lit up even more.
"Yes, exactly! He had an accent by the way." Nancy agreed.
Esme stared at her friend in amusement. She hadn't seen her this excited about talking to a boy after her recent breakup with her boyfriend.
When they had reached the hallway, she felt someone gaze on her and she turned to monitor the room for who it might be.
Her eyes landed on the boy from earlier, She turned out Nancy's voice as she stared, the boy was not making any move to look away, making it obvious that she was the one he was looking at.
"Esme!! you're not listening." Nancy whined tugging her friend's arm gently. She snapped her attention to her, a small apologetic smile on her face.
"Sorry."
"No, no, you know it doesn't work like that." Nancy corrected her lips in a girly pout.
"Fine, I promise to get you lunch today," Esme admitted placing her left hand on her chest.
"ah ah ah. You're missing out on something." She snapped her fingers while Esme rolled her eyes.
"I'll get you the souffle special with blueberry syrup and a banana milk shake." She added and Nancy giggled, clapping her hands together like a five-year-old.
They stopped in front of the class, Nancy going in first with Esme following after. They were a couple of minutes early, the chatter reduced when they walked in before it increased.
"Hey Nancy, there's a party at my place this weekend, you're invited" A boy with blonde hair said, Esme was sure his name was Jared but she didn't care.
She settled down in her seat by the window, taking out her journal and literature text from her bag she arranged them on her table.
"You didn't even invite Esme." Nancy pointed out. Jared turned his attention to Esme who was writing in her book.
"I already asked Jason and he said he would show up so I assu..."
"You assumed I was going to tag along." she completed for him and he nodded.
"Hmm, whatever." she turned back to gaze out of the window.
If she was dreaming now, she wasn't sure but the small yet ugly brown creature with numerous static eyes on its head that hung on the tree next to the window startled her.
She shook her head scolding her self for reading so many fantasy novels that they were all beginning to look too real.
She glanced back outside towards the tree, nothing. She let out a sigh of relief, before turning back to her desk where the creature had now stayed.
A scream left her mouth as she fell back to the floor in fright, she stayed back on there watching as the creature jumped down on the floor before disappearing.
"Miss Jonathan, is everything alright?" Esme gazed at her teacher and the rest of the class who stared at her, her eyes caught Nancy who watched wide eyes.
"Y..ye..yea...I'm fine." she stammered.
"Are you sure you don't need to see the nurse check out your nose, you're bleeding." her teacher added and Esme reached out to her nose.
True to her teacher's words her fingers brushed over the hot red liquid.
"Y..a.ye.a... I should..d." she slowly rose on her feet, gripping the edge of her desk for support.
"Some one should escort her." Her teacher said while she glanced down to her desk and then back outside.
"I will." an unfamiliar voice offered, Esme and the rest of the class turned to the owner of the voice.
It was the boy from earlier, his face was straight and void of emotions as he awaited the teacher's approval to take her.
She didn't notice when he walked into the room or when the teacher introduced him to the rest of the class.
"Do you know where that is?" the teacher asked.
"yea, passed by it on my way here." He answered.
Esme felt the blood dripping onto her desk as she rushed to reach the door not waiting for anyone and she stepped out into the empty hallway.
She heard the door open and close, the light footsteps behind her making her aware he was right on her trail.
He doesn't say anything as they walk, Esme who was unbothered by the silence focused on keeping the blood from staining her uniform. She used her handkerchief which was now stained with a shade of dark red to clean up her nose.
"Shit." she cursed under her breath as she noticed the spot of red on her converse.
"You should stop trying to stop the bleeding." The boy said. She halted in her steps, turning around to face him.
"Right. I mean allowing my blood to stain the floors and my uniform, is a better option than preventing it from happening." she replied sarcastically continuing her journey down the hall.
"It's only going to get worse." he said this time forcefully but Esme ignored him, sighing in relief when she saw the clinic tag overhead.
She marched into the room, her hopes up when she found the school's nurse, Lily behind her desk. Her hands grew cold when she saw another figure seating next to her.
