Damien's POV
I was dismissed from my job as if I had done something wrong.
In the middle of the day, I was called aside and given a settlement big enough to keep my family and me comfortable for years, and words of my service being appreciated were relayed to me by by Maria. I was given no time to even say goodbye to the new friends I had made – just escorted out of the palace with my small fortune.
On top of that, Nuru was getting married, something she had not told me. Was I unworthy of an explanation? Hadn't our relationship been the two of us?
Where had we gone wrong? I wondered as I traveled home. The midday bus was barely full, as most people were at their work places.
