Chapter 2When Daniel first arrived at 42 Bennet Lane, he thought he had the address wrong, though Lucy had presented him with painstakingly detailed directions. His sense that he was in the wrong place only intensified when he was ushered into the house’s homey den. The walls were lined with books, and leather couches had been pushed to the side, opening up a huge space in the middle of the room. Snacks and drinks were on the sideboard, and he was told by the hostess—he didn’t catch her name—to help himself. Like it was a regular party. Like he was a regular guest. Out of anxiety and habit, he arrived at least thirty minutes before everybody else.
