“I’m really loving the title of this book,” my editor Anne is telling me over the phone. “Honu and Nene, the perfect names for a Hawaiian turtle and bird!”
“I’m glad that you like it!” I tell her, relieved, as it hadn’t been at all easy to come up with. Originally I was going to call the turtle Trevor and the bird was named Wanda, but it had never seemed quite right. I had agonized over the names and changed them many times before I got the brilliant idea to look up the actual words for turtle and that particular variety of bird in the native Hawaiian language.
