THE MALDON's ABODE "Jeff... Jeff.... come here son, here's what's in the news." Mrs Maldon called out. "I'm busy mom...I've gotta study" Jeff replied. "Come here" She called out again. "Aargh...." he groaned, put on a shirt, and walked out of the room. From the living room, she could hear the sound of the door being slammed shut, Then his slow, but loud foot steps, indicating that he was reluctantly walking down the stairs. " You called mom" He said, walking towards the mini bar to get himself a drink. "I've warned you countless times to avoid slamming doors" She said. "sorry mom... It was an involuntary action." He replied with an eye roll and gulped a mouthful of wine down his throat. "Anyways, here's what I called you out here for" She said, beaconing him to look at the television. It was the news of a missing person, who happened to be a student of Bridges high school, not only that, she was the Mayor's one and only god- daughter, 'Theodora Smith'. This piece of information made him to spit all the wine from his mouth. "What's all these reaction about? Did you as much as catch a glimpse of her in school today." Mrs Maldon asked. "Uhm.. No..No.." he Lied, suddenly the room became too hot for him. He began to sweat profusely. "I gotta go mom" He said, and hurried back up the stairs. "What's up with him" She wondered, shrugged and continued listening to the news. "Oh s**t" He whispered, not wanting anyone to hear his voice. "Why did she have to be so fragile?? It was just a harmless punch, just one..." He added and exhaled. "I wonder where she would be now." He said, climbed on his bed and made to sleep. For over thirty minutes, he tried to force himself to sleep, but it seemed that mother nature was mad at him. He checked the time, and it was 10:50 pm. "Can I at least sleep? I promise to find her tomorrow." He spoke to no one in particular. "He still tried to force himself to sleep, but he couldn't he just had to go find the so called Mayor's god-daughter. At this time of the night, the security in his mother's compound was so tight, as the security personnel are more active at night than in the day time. He threw a rope down his window and managed to climb down. One way or the other, he was able to sneak out without being caught. He didn't know where to find her, he decided to start his search from the school garden, where he left her. To his greatest surprise, she was still there, lying helpless. "Gosh... She's no survivor material" He concluded. He was a little bit tensed that he might have killed her. He brought his ear close to her chest, and she was still alive. But he noticed that she was breathing rather faster than normal. This got him a little scared, "Hello" he whispered to her ear softly, but she didn't even move, her breathing pace increased by the second. "Are you still there" he whispered again, and she screamed so loud, and woke up with a start. She opened her eyes and when she noticed that she was in an unfamiliar environment, she shut her eyes, placed her palms over her ears, and continued screaming, but this time, it was even louder. "Such a freak... How on earth do I get her to stop this" He asked himself. After a while of thinking, he placed his palm over her mouth to stop her, although she continued, but it wasn't as loud as it was. " Listen to me young lady, you better kep shut, else I'll abandon you here in the mercy of these crickets and other insects. " Who are you?? How am I here?? She asked. " You'll figure that out on your own much later. But for now, keep shut while I think. "You... I recognise your voice. You're the guy from the bushes right?? she asked. "Nice one... now can you keep shut? I need to think". "There's absolutely nothing to think about. Just take me home." she demanded. "And when I do, who do I tell your parents that I am to you" he asked. "You'll figure that out when we get there... Or you could just say you're a random guy walking along the street, then you found me." She said. "Any guy walking along the street at this time of the night is up to no good... Don't you think?? He asked. "Then take me to your house, then at dawn, you take me home". He said. "I can't do that either" he said. "Ugh... Are you ashamed of your house, or you're just being a weakling?? Which is it?? She asked. It was too dark, so she could not see his facial expression. "My mom would kill me if she finds out that I have you in my house." He said. "why is that?? Have we met before? she asked again. "You'll have to figure that out on your own. For now, I'm cold and sleepy." He said. "Then let's go home, I mean your house." She said and stood up. "Ouch..my head hurts so bad" she said. "Let's go then" he said as he stood on his feet."But be ready for whatever comes thereafter" He added. "What?? what do you mean" she asked, but he was already walking ahead of her. "Wait up" she called out. It was such a dark night, one could barely see but thanks to his flashlight, although it had grown dim, they were able to see with it. They walked for what seemed like days, the journey was unending. "Gosh...Where did you say you reside again" She asked, obviously tired of walking. "Well, you asked to go to my house... Walk faster, we still have a long journey ahead of us. They walked for a few more minutes before they arrived a turn, which lead to a popular place in Colorado, known as 'THE PENTHOUSE'. "Why are you leading me towards the penthouse" she asked, standing at a spot. I'm not just leading you towards the penthouse, I'm leading to my house" he replied. "why did you stop here" He asked. "I need to get back home as soon as possible" she demanded. "and why is that??... Oh let me guess, your dad forbids you from ever stepping your foot in the penthouse" He said. "Exactly.... Wait how do you know that." she asked, surprised. "Probably because my mom also forbids me from ever stepping my feet in the courthouse" he replied. "Now this all makes sense to me.. Still, I have to go home now. I can't afford to disobey my dad, plus I'm not meant to be seen around you, or anyone that has any connection with the penthouse" she replied. "I know this may sound awkward, but l'd like to remind you that our parents are the politicians from opposing parties, not us. Therefore, it's not safe for us to bring politics into our personal life." He said. "Are you saying all these just to lure me into the penthouse, coz it's not working" she chipped in. "You can call it whatever you want, but I really need to get some sleep. my day threatens to be a hectic one" he said. "Bye then" she said, as she went to sit under a tree. "Are you always like this? or you're deliberately trying to annoy me." He asked, as he pulled her up by her hand, and dragged her towards the building.
