Roberta POV
Somehow, I slept the night away. The motion of the bus and the exhaustion from crying, lulled me to sleep sometime in the night, not even sure what time. I stopped thinking and doing the usual scenarios one does when the mind tries to make sense of things. I hope all is well with Mum and Dad, and my brothers. I am blocked from them, and so I blocked them back, not to be nasty, but I thought if it was that bad that they needed to block me, I had best block them just in case something happens and they can’t keep up the block. I don’t want to feel it if they are being hurt or tortured and their block fails. Seeing bad thoughts fill my mind, I need to think positive ones, like they are still alive at least and it is the son that is alpha and not the father. I have heard nothing but bad things about the power-hungry father, and his need to give all his sons a pack to run. Hopefully, they are not like him, and here I go repeating myself.
I stood up from my seat and stretched my cramped legs and arms and turned my head around, loosening up my neck. I looked forward and saw the driver had noticed my movements, and he nodded at me in the mirror and I smiled and nodded back. Most of the people on the bus were still sleeping. It was early, the sun only just rising, the sky changing hews, the sight was pretty, long trails of pink and orange wisps of clouds floating high above, and it was the reminder that life continues and not to look back.
I walked forward down the aisle, with the bus driver's eyes on me. He watches me arrive in the mirror.
‘Morning.’ I whispered to him, as I looked out the front of the bus and tried and work out where we were.
‘Morning.’ He replied just as softly and it made me giggle, he was sweet.
‘Can I get you anything?’ I asked him. I had bottled water and snacks if he was hungry.
‘No, the town is about half an hour away, we will stop and have breakfast and then it is non-stop to the city. It should arrive around lunchtime.’ He replied, the driver seemed to be a nice chap, sometimes during the night we must have stopped because this, was a different one to the one who was driving when I fell asleep.
‘I did not notice you pulling over and changing drivers. I must have been tired. I am usually a light sleeper.’ I say through a yawn.
He chuckles at me but does not say anything more. I leave him to concentrate on the road and head back to my seat. I grabbed my water and took a long drink, not bothering with the snacks, breakfast was so close. I opened my laptop and noticed I now had service, so I got online and sent Mum a message that I was about to pull up for breakfast and should arrive in the city by lunchtime and I hoped all was well with the family. Sent her my love and opened one for the headmaster and sent him a similar message, less hugs and kisses, that would be just weird and could be taken the wrong way.
Right on time, we stopped for breakfast and, a much-needed bladder emptying. In the bathroom, I listened to the women talking, and they mentioned the takeover of our pack. They did not give me any new news, so I went out of the cubicle and washed my hands and face, before heading to get some food. I wondered how many other people were discussing the takeover and it then dawned on me that they would have to be werewolves. I was so distraught and tired that I did not pay attention to the people on the bus. I will remedy that when I get back on board. I don’t like the idea that they were talking about me, I hoped no one would know I was from that pack.
The bus was all werewolves, and I listened to the conversations. None knew I was from that pack, and talked freely. I learned the new alpha’s name was Drew and that he kept the beta and delta. I wondered how they knew this, and then thought they might still be able to mind-link or, now we have internet service, they got text messages or emails. It would not surprise me if the whole werewolf community was talking about this takeover. They had done the same with the second son, who was given a pack, and he ran it just like his dad does, and none of it sounded good. I blocked out their conversations, not wanting to listen to gossip that might not be true, or had a small grain of truth to it.
Houses started to appear more frequently, and the closer we got to the city, the more vehicles were on the road. The road was soon because there were two lanes and we were on a busy highway, bumper-to-bumper vehicles going the other way, and we were not much faster. I watched the high-rise buildings come into view. This place was huge. I knew going to the city was going to be different, but I had not thought of how busy it was going to get. We took a turn off the main highway and it was not long and we pulled into a very large bus terminal. Many bays were full of buses, coming and going. It was mind-blowing, I was in awe of all this activity.
We disembarked, and I headed to the side of the bus, like everyone else, hunting for my bags. I waited patiently. I saw my bags but I waited as people rushed forward to grab theirs, as if they were in a hurry. The driver noticed me waiting at the back and I saw him smile at me. I had no idea why, but I smiled back and giggled at the mayhem these people were causing just to grab their bags.
Finally, the ones in a big hurry had their bags and the last few of us could get forward and grab ours. The driver pointed behind me after I got my bags and I turned to look. There, standing with a sign with my name on it, was a large man with a kind face. He was looking straight at me as if he already knew I was the one on the board he held up. I thanked the bus driver and headed to this large me, when he realized, I was coming to him, he lowered the notice and came forward to help me with my bags.
‘Hi, I am Andrew, and I have been asked to drive you to university. Do you need anything before we go?’ He had a nice deep voice, that was soft and kind, not at all what I had expected for such a tall man.
‘No thank you, I am good for now. Once I get to my room, I will look for dinner, but at the moment, I just want all this traveling to be over with.’ He nodded and took me to a large limousine; I was shocked that I would be picked up in such an expensive car and wondered who the person was that the headmaster had contacted.
Once in the vehicle, I looked around, it was spacious and clean, and it even had a fridge. I was in love with this car.
‘There are some drinks in the fridge and to your left is a box. It has sandwiches and a few other things you might like to eat. We will take about an hour to reach the university.’ Andrew said, and a soft sound of music started. It was calming. I opened the fridge and took out a soft drink, and then a chicken and salad roll, and enjoyed the relaxing drive to the university. The streets were busy, the shops many, and the houses looked endless, and the cars rushed by us as if they were late. It seemed everyone was in a hurry here, and I wondered if I would get used to this fast-paced life.
