Chapter Won, but not Lost

The day Jacqueline Odyssey and Shamus Machiavelli released ODSMMO, I was in the hospital having a variety of tests and scans done to help better diagnose my condition. My body was deteriorating at an increasing rate, there was a baseball sized tumor in my brain, and it had gotten to the point where I could barely push my wheelchair up most ramps. I had made sure to save enough money to buy the ODSMMO console when it was released, as well as a few other accessories that make playing the game more realistic, but the hospital refused to let me go. So I called my mom and asked her to take the money and buy everything on the list that I had made and put in the box with the money I had hid in a discreet location. The doctor insisted that I stayed in the hospital after showing me the results from all the tests and scans telling me that it would be best if I were monitored for a while. The hospital had a strict rule that banned any and all video games from the building as a whole because they affected some of the vital medical equipment. I was able to convince my brother to create an account for me as long as he could play it while I was in the hospital and I was very lucky to acquire my original gamer tag that I’ve used for games ever since I first played Pokémon, Viper, but to keep up with modern trends of the gaming world I had him make it V1P3R. I was excited and anxious to play knowing I had finally gotten a mmorpg and be able to claim my name without being forced to use symbols or numbers, which makes the name look more like the first half of an email address. To tell my story so that it feels you have stepped into my shoes, I will let the ODSMMO guide you through my eyes. Fast forward to March 3, 2026, the day I was released from the hospital and also my birthday. My brother had made himself an account and bought his own gear to play with so I wouldn’t have to worry so much about sharing and sanitizing constantly. Once I get home I notice there is a new mobile home in the lot behind my parents house and a small hallway connecting them. My mom pulls in the driveway and parks between the two mobile homes near an elevator ramp on the second one’s front door while telling me about the second house. She explains that she and dad wanted to give me enough space to be happy while I was going through this ordeal since the doctor said I probably wouldn’t live to see my next birthday. She helps me inside and shows me around walking over to the rig and pulling a tray table up. “We made it so you can eat while you play if you wanted. When you’re ready to get a bath go in the bedroom over here and use the new sit in shower. I know you can bathe yourself but we put an intercom next to the shower, one beside the bed, and one here on the post of the table. We have one beside our bed, one in the bathroom next to the toilet, and one in the living room so one of us will hear you when you call. I put your soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush and paste, mouthwash, hairbrush, beardbrush, razor, shaving cream, hair clippers, deodorant, cologne, callous balm, lotion, loofah, long handle scrubber, rash cream, antiseptic, contacts, and cough syrup all in there. I put all your medicine in four separate daily planners and labeled them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime. Your ‘take as needed’ meds I put in your saddle bag with tampons in case of nose or ear bleeding, cotton balls, ear drops, eye drops, cough drops, and bandages. Your Zelda messenger bag has all your notebooks, sketchbooks, and journal type books for when you need to take notes, draw up a design, make a list, or whatever you want to do,” says mother, then she walks to the connecting hallway and looks back at me, “your music stuff is in the guest bedroom which we soundproofed, if you have any questions, problems, or anything at all just call. Have fun, love you,” she smiles while her emerald eyes start to well up with tears. “Thank you, seriously, thank you for everything. I love you too,” I tell her seeing her hands start to shake then she leaves closing the door behind her. I roll myself into the rig, lock the wheelchair in, push the tray back down, boot the game up, and put all the equipment on. The visor lights up after connecting to the rest of the equipment and I am taken to a screen that tests and calibrates the haptics while you customize your settings. Once that is finished, the character creation process begins and I notice that they give you almost an infinite amount of options so that you can be as detailed as you wish to be. I have always had this image in my mind about what I would look like as a superhero and I spend close to four hours making my character paying very close attention to every detail. His hair is black, white, and neon blue with each color running the full length reaching down to his hips except for the sides and back of his head which are shaved. I choose to have the very top French braided, the sides of the long hair waterfall braided, then they blend together into three separately braided strands. His eyebrows are black, spiked arch, and well kept, his eyes are electric blue with black eyeliner and dark grey eyeshadow to accentuate the glowing blue iris color. His nose is a very normal looking nose, his mouth is average with the bottom lip slightly bigger than the top with a pink hue, and his teeth are normal except for his top canines which are slightly longer and have a sharp point. Not too much like a werewolf or vampire, but enough to prove a bite would break skin. His skin tone is more white than actual pigmentation. His 1/8inch hair around the sides and back of his head comes to a V shape on the back of his neck and the stubble continues down his sideburns following his jawline to a half goatee and soul patch in the same coloration as his hair but his neck is hairless. He is 6’4”/195cm tall and 250lbs/114kgs athletic muscle build. For piercings, both of his ear lobes have black rings with metallic hot pink balls and a row of 6 black crescent rings with blue, pink, and purple spikes on each ear. For tattoos he has a black Jedi Symbol of Light on his glabella with a sapphire embedded in the star, accenting the Wrinkle of Wrath. His left shoulder has a black dia de los meurtos skull with blue and pink designs, his right shoulder has a blue crescent moon, and a purple lineless Orion constellation both in Samoan style. His right arm has a custom design blue lotus with illusory motion celestial images in the petals with stars and planets in a line leading to my V glowing blue below the palm of his hand. His left wrist has the same V in glowing purple with my custom designed and colored crest honoring my favorite games where both arms being sleeve like as they join together around the elbows. He has my original V design in glowing blue, pink, and purple with water like illusory motion on his sternum similar to Iron Man’s chest piece, but has a diamond dust ice crystal embedded in the star. His back has the same tattoo I do in the same place, only bigger and slightly different; a black and white yin yang in the middle constantly spinning counterclockwise, the symbol for Demon of Light above with black, white, and pink aura flow illusory motion behind it, the Chinese symbol for Chi below with purple aura flow illusory motion behind it, the Japanese symbol for water to the left with sapphire blue water flow illusory motion behind it, the Blue Star of Ice symbol to the right with electric blue ice in illusory motion that seems to be growing, and each element is blended with the others around it fully encompassing the yin yang. Finally on the back of his neck he has a Shorin Ryu symbol in black lining with the Tomoes being neon azure, metallic amethyst, and hot fuchsia. I Once I finally finish creating my avatar, I am taken the main hub world wearing a simple black t-shirt, black pants, and black boots. I open my options menu that opens to the inventory by default which made me curious to see what they give you as a new player. I see a tanto style survival knife and a grey 90’s model Chevrolet Monte Carlo. I also notice a map screen, a social screen, and a settings screen in the options menu. I decide to do some exploring just to see what all there is to do here and get a feel for how the game works while familiarizing myself with the layout so that I won’t get lost, or worse, killed in the first five minutes. I burn around five hours walking and running around doing small quests and missions for different things trying to earn some coin. I feel a sense of freedom, mixed with nostalgia, being able to walk, run, jump, and use my legs in general. I imagine that this feeling is similar to how Jake Sully, from James Cameron’s movie Avatar, felt the first time he used the substrate gaining control of his avatar waking up on the gurney and being able to feel, move, use his legs for the first time since he was paralyzed. Although I wish there was a real way to achieve a true Consciousness Transfer, which is depicted in many films as being a permanent transfer, I am skeptical. I come across a desert level that reminds me of Tatooine from the Star Wars franchise. As I begin to look around, I notice an old person that looks like a unique version of Drizzt Do’Urden playing around with a black Astromech droid with pink accents and as I get closer, I notice it’s a female, so I shout out to them, “Hey Drizzity!” They turn around laughing and I realize it is Kinaeris the All Seeing, Jacqueline Odyssey’s avatar. “Come on over padawan!” She yells beckoning for me to join her, so I jog over to her, we exchange introductions, then she turns back to the broken Astromech droid, “this little guy seems to be broken and stranded but still good, what do you think?” I kneel down next to it seeing its number classification is R2-V6 and begin repairing it while she asks me questions about me and my life. After I finish she tells me happy birthday, gives me 500,000 coins, and upgrades my character to ODSMMO Engineer class, which allows me to build, repair, and create things in ODSMMO, so that I could build and create what I want if I cannot already find it. She sends me a friend request then disappears in a cloud of pixels. I stand there speechless, in awe that I met THE Jacqueline Odyssey, or her avatar anyways, then the Astromech droid starts beeping and whirring while bumping into my leg. I look down and a caption box pops up displaying what it is saying to me which makes me happy to see that they give you a translation for npcs, non-player characters, and other players who speak a different language. “Thank you for fixing me, would you like for me to accompany you?” The caption bubble reads, and below the caption a prompt bubble pops up over its head with a yes and no option which takes me by surprise. I look around for any other players or npcs that might be in the area for a quest or something that would trigger the prompt from it, but there is nothing around but me and the droid. I select yes and the droid shrinks down digitally then pops into my hand as my inventory screen appears in front of me with a prompt message telling me to add it. I put my hand up to the screen, drop the Astromech, and it shows up in my inventory then I swipe the screen away while looking around to notice I am stranded on Tatooine with no portal in sight. I pull the map up to see where the nearest portal is and it shows me that I am five kilometers from Mos Eisly, a spaceport city, so I start walking towards it but get tripped by something buried in the sand next to where the Astromech droid was. I gather myself and notice that there is a long piece of black metal sticking out of the sand, then my curiosity gets the best of me so I start digging. Once I finish, I realize that it is a rusty T-85 X-wing fighter that is badly damaged. I walk to the cockpit and pry it open with a piece of scrap metal from one of wings and it hisses as it depressurizes blowing sand and dust all over the place. Once the dust settles I see a pile of coins, various items, clothes, and equipment that seems to be what was once a Mandalorian bounty hunter npc, but it is confusing as to why they would be in an X-wing. I reach down in an attempt to rummage through the pile and it starts floating up to me as if my hand were a vacuum. It surprises me at first, but then I remember that some video games have the magnet effect for collecting loot from enemy npcs and players. Once I have the last piece from the unusually large pile, I step down off of the X-wing carefully, as to not get cut, and pull up my inventory to see what all I had collected. A white Mandalorian helmet, a black rugged hooded cloak, a pair of metallic purple aviator sunglasses with white frames, a black Baretta 93R, and a southpaw designed black leather Mandalorian utility belt with a shoulder holster harness. The shoulder holster has four pouches on the left side below a knife holster and a g*n holster on the right side. The belt part has a thigh mounted quick-draw g*n holster on the front of the right side with four pouches and a lightsaber latch. I return to the cockpit while equipping the utility belt, the hooded cloak, and the aviators. I put the helmet in my inventory then I put the B93R, that I named Styx, in the shoulder holster along with my survival knife while realizing that the aviators were just cosmetic, but I was still happy to have found them. I look around the cockpit to be sure I didn’t miss anything and find a black, with cyan trimming, arm mounted Vortex Omni-tool bracer artifact with four slots for attachments; slot #1 on top, #2 on the right side, #3 on the left side, and #4 on the bottom. I also notice a crystal Vortex Omni-pad artifact, and a black and silver Orion Multitool laying beneath the seat. I remember reading that there were plenty of rare items and artifacts hidden all around the ODSMMO, and anyone could achieve them if they had the skills, determination, and strategy. But all of these I found are extremely rare and almost impossible to find, “it’s weird to see three artifacts hidden in the same location,” I say aloud without meaning to. I begin to think that I had walked up on Jacqueline while she was setting it up and I caught her off guard. I equip the omni-tool bracer on my right arm then I open my inventory, claim the X-wing, and put the omni-pad in. I put the Multitool on the #2 slot of the omni-tool noticing that there is already something in the #1 slot. I take a closer look at the omni-tool and see that the attachment is a grappling hook launcher that rises slightly having a bright blue laser for targeting. It has a handle that ejects from the front adorned with several buttons, dials, and switches which includes a safety switch, reel speed dial, reel in button, reel out button, claw hook open and close button, and a line detach button on the back of the attachment. To fire and retract at full power, the handle has to be squeezed which clicks an internal trigger to launch the strange looking claw hook with near perfect accuracy. Once the claw hook finds a suitable target or the line runs out, the trigger inside the handle resets allowing for it to be activated retracting at a mind numbing rate, due to the incredible power of the retracting reel. While walking towards Mos Eisly fiddling around curiously, I begin to understand that here in the ODSMMO, anything and everything is possible. All of the worlds, dimensions, and universes that have been imagined up to this point in time have a possibility to exist and could be visited. My mind starts going wild at all the possibilities that I can experience as long as my real physical body can survive. I finally arrive at Mos Eisly just before the twin star sunset and notice that there are hardly any players around, aside from a few hardcore Star Wars fans, but the city is full of npcs offering quests and/or running a store. I don’t see a portal anywhere but I spot a few ships in the docking bays at the hangar tower which gives me hope that one of them is either player owned, or a taxi ship. I decide to check out what the different stores are selling while keeping an eye out for portals, possible enemies, and other players. I’ve had bad experiences in the past with higher level players picking on newer or passive players since they are easy targets to get cheap kills. I come to a vendor selling ship parts and realize that I would need some parts to fix the X-wing, but since I haven’t had the chance to look at it yet, so I didn’t know what all I would need. But I take a look anyways and see that they have remote access chips, so I buy one putting it in my inventory. As I approach the tower, I catch a glimpse of some lightsabers in a store across the street. Even though I really did try to resist, the sight of all those lightsabers is just too difficult to walk away from, even a die hard Trekky would have bent at the knee. I walk inside the store only to have my mind blown by the breathtaking selection they have on display. I know I need to be cautious with how I spend the coin that Jacqueline was gracious enough to gift to me, but I am not going to pass up a chance to get a lightsaber or two. So I buy Count Dooku’s saber, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s saber from A New Hope, and a remote access chip. I notice there’s a workbench on the side of the store where you can build your own and I design a curved hilt black, silver, and azure body with cyan lights and aquaburn blade flash. I look around occasionally to make sure nobody was trying to kill me and spot something in the back of the store glowing from the light of the twin star sunset, so I walk back to check it out. As I get to the back, I notice the object is underneath a large droid, so I lay on the floor, grab it, and stand up. It is a pure black crystal for a lightsaber, “wow, I thought these things were one of a kind,” I say aloud without meaning to then I return to the workbench and put the black crystal in the lightsaber I created and hit the save button. As it loads I create another saber; dual function sword/tonfa neo-orchid electro focus crystal and hot pink jagged focus crystal, both crystals employ a bifurcating cyclical-ignition pulse in a helix formation, special switch for focusing the crystals and power systems to enable the lightsaber to project a blade three meters in length for three minutes. I thank the store clerk and bid them farewell saying, “Have a good day!” Only realizing after I left that I was talking to an npc and face palm myself. I walk back to the tower looking up but I can’t see anything this close to it, so I walk inside hoping to see which floors the ships are on while naming the curved hilt saber, Jujik, and the dual function one, Nova. Close to the top I spot a ship that I think I know, but it is obscured by other ships, my poor eyesight, and the fact it is getting dark and the lights have not come on yet. I get into one of the elevators taking it to the top 24th floor assuming that is where the ship is. As I pass the 18th floor, a constant gust of wind starts buffeting me with dirt and sand, so I pull the hood of the cloak up and pull the cape around to protect myself. When I reach the top floor the wind slows down as I exit the elevator and look out over the desert to see a massive sandstorm raging below and the 24th floor is just above the top of the storm. I remove the aviators sliding them into one of the chest pockets of the utility belt as I walk through the long hallway circling the edge of the tower looking for a door leading inward. I start thinking of turning around as I approach the elevator I used to get up here but the hallway comes to a dead end where the elevator should have been which throws me for a loop, literally and figuratively. I turn around and see a completely different hallway than before and pull Styx and the knife out just to be safe then proceed down this seemingly new hallway. I try to stay vigilant as this new area looks to be a different planet altogether seeing my avatar’s breath and only having the light from the surrounding area spilling in through the grates. I make what feels like an entire trip around the same circle as before and come upon two doors, one on the outside of the circle and one to the inside. There is no visible way to know what you’re about to walk into to so I decide to open the inside door first which opens to an area high in the sky above a desert, which frightens me at first, but then I close the door and open the other one. This door leads to the 23rd floor of the tower so I walk through and instantly recognize the ship in front of me to be the Normandy SR-2 from Mass Effect 3, which takes my breath away at how big and beautiful it is seeing it as if I were there beside it in reality. The open docking hatch catches my attention as I walk around the ship looking for the owner and since the hatch was left open I decide to go inside and have a look around in hopes that I might find the owner. When I reach the Normandy’s hatch, I knock a few times, each time louder than the last, but I do not hear or see anything and after waiting long enough to give them a chance to get to the door, I walk inside while staying alert. At first I am not very impressed, although seeing one of my favorite space vessels up close is impressive enough, but I have probably seen the interior of this ship more times than I care to mention. My attitude changes as I wander deeper into the ship with ecstatic curiosity while exploring every single part of it that it allows me to. I start to feel disappointment as I take the elevator to the last floor, engine room, but I’m not about to give up so easily. The elevator stops and the doors open to the engine room with a quarter turn staircase on each side leading down a level towards the engine. I proceed onward taking the stairs on the left side then to the hallway leading to the engine and begin to hear two female voices talking unintelligibly. I look down and see a large cluttered, and chaotic I might add, mess of tools, parts, metal sheets, nuts, bolts, and other various items all randomly scattered across the floor that continues all the way to the edge of the walkway where it leads past the radiation shielding. I do my best to tiptoe through the chaos to get closer to the engine without stepping on anything while quietly pulling the slide back to check the chamber, which is occupied. I sneak to the end of the walkway hoping that, whoever they are, will not kill me for trespassing, even though the door was left wide open, so anyone could just walk right on in. I spot a female human avatar and a female robot, or android, avatar who both seem to be having problems trying to repair whatever is wrong with the engine. I crouch down and tap the metal walkway with my knife to get their attention trying not to startle them, but they both jump in surprise, then turn around to face me, and the barrel of Styx. “How did you get aboard my ship without my permission? And why are you here?” The android girl asks breaking the ice. “The airlock hatch was open so I assumed you wouldn’t care because anyone could have waltzed right in and killed both of you,” I say putting my weapons away, “I came here through a portal but it’s gone now, so I’m stranded here until I find a way to another world, grab a taxi shuttle, or catch a ride with another player,” I reply with blunt honesty, thinking that honesty would be faster than coming up with a ridiculous excuse. “Dammit Leeloo! I told you to close the door behind you when you got in from the store! I’m sorry, where are your manners, I’m Phazeon,” she points to the other girl’s shirt where it is spelled out, but verbally it is said like the word fashion, “and this is my cousin Leeloo, would you be a dear and leave my ship closing the door on your way out?” “I actually shut it when I boarded, what’s wrong with it? I’m pretty good at fixing stuff so I could help out if you wouldn’t mind giving me a ride back to the hub world. Oh, and my name is V1P3R, but everyone usually calls me V,” I smile at her as she scowls at me, but then my contagious good and calm attitude makes her smile. She walks over and hands me a diagnostic pad. Her body is solid metal with different shades highlighting the s*x appealing parts of her human shaped body. Her face is fully functional to imitate emotions including the eyes, which are turquoise, nose, ears, and mouth but her hair is made up of fiber optic wires that she can control the length and color of it without having to get a different style which is, at the moment, black and hangs just past her shoulder blades. Leeloo’s avatar is based on Milla Jovovich’s Leeloo from the movie The Fifth Element. I take a look at the pad and figure out what is causing her engine to malfunction, then I look around the area and pick up some parts before climbing down into the engine pit with them. I slide down to the middle where the stabilizing pylons are and begin working to fix them while Phazeon and Leeloo assist me by getting parts for me. I have this habit of explaining what I am doing while I am doing it when helping or tutoring someone, Leeloo acts disinterested, but Phazeon seems to be eager to learn. I also keep saying Phazeon’s name wrong and she keeps correcting me until we got to the last pylon, “hey Phaze, can you hand me a gravimetric balance rod?” I request, then she gets it and slaps my hand with it catching my attention. “It’s pronounced like ‘FASHION’ for the last time, ‘FASHION’!” she gets frustrated scolding me in an annoyed tone, and I cannot help but to laugh.
