The house is a little too quiet and I wonder if Maya is in.
She couldn't come for classes because she wasn't feeling well. I know it's all the hangover from all the partying she had the whole weekend.
Maya is a party animal.
She rarely stays in the house.
When I joined campus, I met Maya and we clicked instantly and we have been friends for the past three years and a half.
We were both new students in the university so we got ourselves a two bed roomed house and we share the bills.
She has been a good friend to me and sometimes I feel sad that we will be going our separate ways after finishing campus.
She said she would be going back home after. I told her I would stay back because, I don't think going back home for me will work.
It's just amazing that we are in our final year and in less than six months we will be graduating out of that place.
It will be a relief for me most especially, because my life in college was hell.
How I still got to stay for all those years still perplexes me. Or maybe it's the fact that my family would kill me if they heard I dropped out.
Honestly I've been tempted to do that so many times in my life.
Lydia has played a big role in getting me to that point in life.
When I joined campus, Lydia tried to befriend me, but since I didn't like the kind of lifestyle she was trying to introduce me to, I kindly rejected her offer.
It was a really bad idea, because it seemed like Lydia wasn't the one that took no for answers.
She tried to make my life a living hell, and I tried to avoid her at all costs.
Things got a little out of hand, when I started dating Fabian.
Fabian was this good looking young gentleman.
He was a final year when I was in second year.
He was a nice guy, I liked him and he felt the same way about me. So when he asked me out, I didn't think it was a bad idea.
Fabian, was this kind of my perfect man. He loved my style of dressing.
Listened to the music I loved, in general, he liked the kind of lifestyle I lived.
And given I'm into a little bit of a Gothic lifestyle, not everyone saw it as cool.
But Fabian, he thought everything about me was cool.
And that was why we kind of just flowed.
So we began dating.
Woe unto me.
He never told me that he had dated Lydia.
When Lydia found out, she caused drama.
And I mean, a lot of drama. There was a cat fight at some point and when she realized she couldn't do much to separate Fabian and I, she decided to use the power she had in the institution.
Her father was the vice chancellor.
Fabian was discontinued.
He never really talked to me after that.
He left school and left town.
He never ever talked to me again.
Last I heard of him he had graduated from a different University.
I always feel he somehow blames me for him being discontinued. Maybe he is right, if we never dated, then maybe that would have never happened.
The door is unlocked when I get in, which means Maya is in.
I walk to the kitchen and grab a bottle of cold drinking water from the fridge. There is something cooking in the cooker that's leaving a beautiful aroma all over the place.
Maya loves cooking.
Which is quite an advantage to me because I hate cooking.
I can cook yea, but I hate cooking. I only do it when I am extremely hungry, but since I always have Maya around me, she does most of the cooking.
I don't even know what my life would be without her,
I'd probably die of hunger.
I check on the cooker, there's beef stew cooking and she has on boiled bananas, her favorite meal I must say.
She seems to be in a good mod.
She cooks this anytime she is in a good mood.
I wonder how she garnered the strength to do all this cooking when she could barely get out of bed in the morning.
When I walk out of the kitchen I can see smoke coming out of her bedroom.
I shake my head in disbelief and walk towards the direction.
She's probably getting high or something.
I push her door in and I'm startled by the presence before me.
Maya is seated on the floor, her legs crossed and she is holding a young man's hands, he is seated in the same position as she is and between them is a platter with burning herbs.
The herbs are the ones causing the smoke
The guy opens his eyes and turns to look at me, Maya doesn't.
"Whoa! don't you know how to knock?" The one person I didn't expect would be here says and I frown.
"What are you doing here Liam?" I ask him and he shrugs.
That is why Maya is cooking her favorite meal, because he came visiting.
"It's called meditation." He says and turns back his attention to whatever activity they have been doing.
This is just stupid.
I don't know why Maya does this sometimes.
I sniff the smell of the smoke and I'm tempted to laugh.
"Which herb is that?" I ask.
"Shh."
Who the hell is she shushing?
"Maya which incense is that?"
She sighs but doesn't turn to look at me.
"Cannabis."
I swear I almost burst out laughing.
"Bhang?"
She nods.
"You're burning bhang as incense?"
She nods again.
I have a crazy friend.
I knew she wouldn't just be meditating or doing yoga how people normally do, she just had to be crazy about it.
"Its a holy herb." She says and I nod.
Indeed it is.
"Liam get out of this room!"
Maya is influencing him into inhaling bhang, a very bad idea.
"Come on sis." He says and I roll my eyes.
I reach to where he is and hold his hand dragging him from the floor.
"Go check on the food."
"Bianca, we were having a moment." Maya says and I roll my eyes at her.
"Yea, I won't let you introduce my baby brother into your crazy lifestyle."
"He is not a baby."
"Tell her." Liam says but the glare I give him is enough to send him out of the room.
I'm glad he is here, but I don't like what they were just doing.
"He is nineteen you know." Maya says and I nod.
"Yeap, there is a teen at the end of his age, meaning he is still a teenager, do not introduce him to drugs."
"This is incense, besides, he wasn't smoking it."
"Yea, but he was inhaling it."
Arguing with Maya about her burning the drug will just be a waste of time.
"Ssh."
I shake my head in disbelief.
She really needs to stop doing that to me.
She is still seated in the same position her hands on her lap and her eyes closed.
She hasn't even opened them since I walked in on her and my brother.
"What did you see now?" I ask her sarcastically.
I know she is going to say something along those lines.
She always tells me she sees me in her meditations, which is always stupid. I know better than to believe her.
Maya is always high seventy five percent of the time. She says being high makes her feel normal.
It's weird, but so is Maya.
"Come here." She says waving for me to come over.
I shake my head in disbelief and move closer.
"Sit here." She orders and I do just as she says.
She stretches and reaches for my arm.
I don't usually like when she starts doing this, but then again, it makes her happy, and sometimes when I'm in the mood, I don't mind.
"Breathe in." She says and I close my eyes and breathe in.
I don't normally use drugs but the amount of passive smoking I do with the bhang she smokes, has now made me a drug user.
"Breath out." I do just that.
Funny, the feeling is calming.
Like very calming, given I had a bad day, I didn't expect I would feel this calm.
"Tell me about him." She says and I open one eye. To check her out.
I have no idea what she is talking about.
"Who?" I ask with a raised brow.
"The guy you met today."
When she says that, I open my eyes and look at her.
But hers are still closed.
What the hell is going on here?
I haven't told her anything about meeting the new guy back in school. I mean, we haven't even had time to chat or gossip.
So this is a little out of the ordinary.
"How did you know that?" I ask her and she opens her eyes, looks straight into mine and smiles.
She leans forward her brow wrinkled earnestly.
She looks so excited, like she just won a jackpot and I'm just puzzled.
"So you met someone today?" She asks in excitement and that's when I get that she wasn't meditating or anything, she just tried to imagine it and spoke it out loud.
"No." I try to lie.
"You did."
"You don't know that."
I wish I could have just pretended I didn't know what she was talking about, we wouldn't be having this awkward conversation, because now Maya won't leave me alone until I tell her about Arnold.
"I'm psychic and you know it."
I roll my eyes.
She claims that, but we both know she is delusional when it comes to that.
"You wish."
"I'm being serious Bianca, you met a guy today."
I shrug.
"Maybe I did."
She pushes the platter with the burning herbs away and moves closer.
I know she's just excited about the gossip, but I'm not telling her anything. She went and partied the whole weekend hence missing class, and in turn missing on all the drama.
I won't be recapping it for her.
"And?" She asks looking at me as a way to tell me to go ahead.
But I shake my head.
I won't be giving her the satisfaction of thinking she was right.
"It's not what you think. He was my desk mate during Eric's class."
"Say what?"
I know she wants to know more, but honestly I'm not in the mood to tell her everything that happened in class, given most of it doesn't even make sense to me.
"I had another nightmare." I tell her and I watch as her face turns into a frown.
"You did?"
I nod.
"Did you sleep walk?"
"No."
She knows everything about my nightmares because she lives with me. She experiences it all. even when I start sleep walking, she is the one that kind of always helps me out of them.
"Was he in it?" She asks and I nod nervously.
I know I will have to explain what I meant by that.
But she is the only one who understands me when it comes to that.
Just then the door is pushed in and Liam walks in.
"Girl time is over, the food is ready." He says and we both smile and get up.
"Hey bro."
I haven't said hi to him since I found him because I didn't like what I found them doing, but I'm already over that.
"Hey sis."
He says and walks in to hug me.
I wrap my arms around him and it just feels nice having him here.
I know it's going to be an amazing period.
