Chapter 2

It was just after 3 pm when our class got dismissed, I was making my way down the hallway towards the exit where I found Eliza waiting outside for me. I caught her looking at the guys with hungry eyes. Eliza and I have been friends since in forever, she too was an orphan, and over the years searching for her parents we found out that they passed away. She was the opposite of me, she continued living like she wasn't an orphan. Like me, she received a scholarship in Art and History. She won multiple awards for her paintings over the years, everyone saw what I saw. She was talented. "To what do I owe the pleasure?" I asked when I neared her. "Why have you never told me that you have talented boys over here?" She asked not answering my question. I quirked an eyebrow and folded my arms. "You still owe me a milkshake from months ago." She answered removing her eyes from the boys who have seen her checking them out."Great, you are only visiting me when you want to claim your favours." I said starting to making my way. She pulled up her shoulders and followed me down the sidewalk. "That's what friends are for." She said. "I didn't know that was the definition of the word friend." I replied dryly. "Why do you smell like coffee?" She asked sniffing me. "Because I'm covered in it." I answered."A normal person would drink the coffee not throw it out on themselves.""No, duh.""So, what happened?" She asked ignoring my sarcasm. "A guy stumbled into me this morning after I bought myself a cup of coffee. The cup broke due to the collision and spilled all over me." I told her. "I feel like there is more to this story." She said looking at me. "He's not worth it." I pulled the Diners door open for her and motioned for her to go in first. "There is more to this guy who stumbled into you." She continued as we made our way through the Diner. "He's good-looking and he is the Captain of the football team." She quirked an eyebrow at the word good-looking."Hmm, you at least observed that he is good-looking and you have never called any boy good-looking in your life." I rolled my eyes at her silliness and greeted Brenda instead. "Can you please organize a milkshake for madam?" I asked Brenda who smiled at my humour. I then made my way to the back where I got dressed for work.Eliza stayed at the Diner and kept me company when I had nothing to do but to wait for customers. It was almost closing time and we were seated at the counter with Brenda waiting for the time to pass. "So, how are your classes?" Brenda asked Eliza. "Pretty good, except we have this task that we are continuing tomorrow where we have this nude model posing for us. Our task is to make a sketch of him and you won't believe me how hard it is to keep my hands to myself." I just smiled when Brenda looked at me with an unreadable expression.Eliza lost her virginity back in high school to a guy that she thought is the one. Only she was wrong and she ended up being played. When she finally came to her senses and understood that they were only teenagers. She then joined the rollercoaster of having s*x with inappropriate partners. Eliza wasn't shy and whenever she got the chance, she told me about her lovers. It turned out that she loved s*x more than she anticipated."You know back in my day, we weren't even allowed to sleep around. You kept your legs shut until you were married." Brenda said. "Where's the fun in that?" Eliza questioned. "You should be careful, it may bring you pleasure now but with pleasure comes responsibility." Brenda lectured. "I don't sleep with just any guy I just met." No, she just screwed the men she knew over and over."And what if that man catches feelings for you, what then?" Brenda left the question hanging in the air as she walked away."She now thinks that I'm a slut, doesn't she?" I didn't answer because Brenda has her own beliefs about what is right and wrong. And she sees things differently to us. She was old school.I was rescued from the situation when Brenda ordered us to clean up so that we could leave. We were in the middle of putting the chairs on the tables, sweeping and mopping when the doorbell jiggled and customers entered the Diner. It was still a few minutes before we closed and they only wanted takeaways.Brenda helped them with their order while we continued to clean up. I was busy with the last table when I had my first look at the late customers. Without looking and realizing what I was doing I misplaced the chair, it dropped from my hand and took down the rest of the chairs. It made one hell of a noise and nobody could've missed it. Not even the four boys, including Duncan Jones who were waiting for their orders. I also caught Eliza smiling at me as she was trying to hold in her laugh."Darn it." I grumbled. I didn't even take the liberty to look at them. I just picked up my mess as fast I could without messing it up again. I thought it was one of the waiters who decided to help me out, but to my surprise, it was one of Duncan's friends. Did I seriously think that the almighty Duncan Jones would help out a girl like me?"You okay?" The guy asked picking up a chair and placing it on the table. "Fine. Thanks." I replied picking up the last one. "Late snack?" I asked referring to the take aways. "It's dinner actually." He replied with a guilty look. "You do know that Mcdonals is open 24hours, right?" He nodded. "We like the burgers from here and we were kind of glad to find you guys open.""Too lazy to make your own food?" Instead of being offended he actually chuckled. "We are boys, Zoey. And we just finished up with practice." I frowned. "Coach is kicking our butts after our first loss of the season." I didn't even know who this guy was. He looked at Duncan when he made his way over to where we were standing. "Foods ready." He told him. The guy nodded and said goodbye. I waited for Duncan to say something. He then surprised me when he tossed something my way, I caught it easily and noticed it was a breakfast muffin. "Next time you offer me food, make sure its something sweet." I was blown away by him that I didn't know how to respond. He then said goodbye and made his way out. I caught Eliza looking at me with a questioning look. I looked at the muffin and noticed he bought me a new one since I squashed the one I bought."Okay, who was that?" She asked walking up to me. "That's Duncan Jones, the boy responsible for my spilled coffee." I answered her. "And he bought you a muffin?""Technically it was mine. I threw him with it." She looked horrified. "He got you another one?" I nodded. "Guess it's his way of apologizing."
