Since Lionel only shot stag films between the filming of his major projects, Violet didn’t expect to hear from the director for several weeks, which was why she was surprised when Lionel called his actress to invite her to a party on the Saturday evening following the San Pedro film shoot.
Violet was immediately suspicious. “What kind of party is it, Mister Rains?” she inquired.
He laughed lightly as if he understood her meaning. “Just a cocktail party at the house. You’ll recognize a few faces, give you a chance to get more comfortable with the Hollywood life. Don’t put up any roadblocks on this one, I want you there.”
Will Henry Wilkes be there? she wanted to ask, although she didn’t have the courage.
