Chapter 5When I saw Enrique at school Monday, he acted as if nothing had happened, so I played it that way too. I ran into Karen Sue, who was friendly enough, but she couldn’t wait to let me know she was dating someone else. She also found a way to let me know it was my own fault for ignoring her. Girls don’t like to be ignored.
The old man suddenly started hanging around the place more than usual, and that meant he was lying low for some reason or the other. I scooted home right after school every afternoon to make sure the girls were all right. On Wednesday, I came home to find him tearing out the baseboard, looking for more money.
