Four: My Human Family
Ruby
I’m a crying blubbing mess as I race down the deserted road leading to my Aunt Sally’s and Uncle Gus’s Dinner. I reach for a tissue taking my eyes off the road when I suddenly lose control of my car. I scream pressing on the breaks with both feet. I spin and end up on the side of the road. Breathing hard I close my eyes and try to calm my heart that is still throbbing in my chest. It seems the further I get from Southern Winds Pack the worst my chest is hurting and now I am having a hard time catching my breath.
I squeeze my eyes shut and I breath slowly in through my nose and out through my mouth. I jump and scream as my cell starts to ring. I reach in between my thighs and my phone is not there. I throw my door open and get out of the car and start searching under my seat for my phone. Finally finding it I stand up just as it stops ringing. I sigh looking and seeing a missed call from my mom. I take a deep breath and hit the call button. As I listen to it ringing, I walk around my car and see the shredded tire making me sigh as I hear my mother voice. “Ruby, where the hell are you and why did you run away from your father!”
“Mom, I’m so sorry. I just couldn’t stay there a moment longer.” I say as I start pacing in front of my car and I hear my moms sigh. “What is the problem now?” I hear the disappointment in her voice as tears gather in my eyes once more. I look up at the full moon and think it doesn’t matter anymore. He doesn’t belong to me but her now. “It’s nothing mom. I just had a run in with the Future Luna and she… Hu…. Hu… hurt me.” I stutter out. My mom gasps. “She was not his Fated Mate, and the Moon Goddess denied his claim to the Alpha title. I heard that Alpha Brent was so mad that he threw them both into the dungeons.”
That was the moment I closed my eyes and told my mom the whole story. Everything that had happened from the laundry room on to when I ran away. My mom couldn’t believe it. “Does he know who you are.” I shake my head and frown as my mom cannot see me. “No, I don’t think so.” I say as I hear my mom hum under her breath. “That’s good. Go to your Aunt Sally’s and don’t worry about anything. I will make sure he doesn’t find you.” I hang up after that. Headlights light up the dark night as I look over to a car pulling onto the side of the road. As soon as the door opened, I could smell him, sh*t another wolf.
I watch a tall lanky guy gets out of the car. “Hey, you need some help?” I watch him as he walks over to me, and I smile at him. He is a nice guy. I learned his name is Todd and that he is a member of the Silver Waterfalls pack. We exchange numbers and I feel as if we can become friends. I watch him as I get in and drive away. I frown as it hits me, he is a Male Omega. The first one I have ever met and cannot wait to get to know him better. The best was he didn’t say anything about my appearance or that I smelled badly of blood. I could barely walk as my hip is hurting along with the rest of my body. I don’t’ know if it’s from my mate rejecting me or from the beating I had taken at the hands of his chosen Luna.
I pull into the dinners parking lot and head around back where the house is. I pull into the driveway and park my car. The house is dark letting me know that my Aunt and Uncle are working the night shift. Ever since the College came to town. The dinner now stays open twenty-four seven. I get out and hobble to the back entrance. I see my Uncle Gus cleaning the grill for the next rush. He looks back when he hears the door slam shut. “Ruby what are you doing back so soon?”
I limp in my leg not working right as I see my Aunt Sally hanging up the phone. Most likely she just got done talking to my mother. She gives me that pitying look that I hate. I have received those looks since the day my wolf didn’t manifest. “Oh, honey. I’m so sorry.” I hear her say as she pulls me in for a hug. I hug her back breathing in her scent as it calms me and makes me feel safe. “Gus, I’m taking Ruby to the house to clean her up and treat her wounds.” I look at my Uncle and see the anger on his face as he takes in my bloody clothes and face. He nods his head once and turns back around.
My Aunt holds onto me as my hip start to go out. It feels like it is fractured. It will heal fine as long as I lay down and don’t stand on it. I’m maybe not a Werewolf in the sense that I don’t have a wolf, but I still have Werewolf blood running through my veins. Giving me the speed and strength and healing of one just not on the same level. I lean heavily on my Aunt. “She really did a number on you huh?” I chuckle not feeling happy in the least. “I think it was more to do with the rejection than anything else Aunt Sally.” I say as she stops and turns her head looking at me.
“What did he say to you?” I look at her like she is crazy. “What do you mean?” She shakes her head at me. “What I mean is what exactly did he say to you to reject you?” I stare at her as I stubble in her embrace. Why would she want to know that. I mean I know her, and Uncle Gus know about Werewolves because she is my father’s sister. She couldn’t know about our laws and beliefs, could she? “He…. He…. He didn’t say anything to me. He just stared in my eyes as he claimed another as his mate.” I say as my eyes sting once again with tears.
She nods her head as we finally get inside of the house, and she sits me down on a chair at the kitchen table. I watch as she puts water on to boil and gets the first aide out. She comes over to me and starts cleaning the blood off of my face. I wince as she touches my split lip. When the hot water whistles, she stands up and nods her head. Walking to the stove she starts talking. “That is not a rejection my dear. Your mother told me what happened at the Alpha Ceremony.” I look at her as she makes the tea. “In my own option, Alpha’s are arrogant and stupid.” She stops after she drops the tea bag into the steaming cup of water.
“Then again their mate can be clueless also.” I huff at her as she walks back to me. “You have been raised here with me and your Uncle Gus since you were sixteen. Humans are very different.” I nod my head. “Yes, it seems to me that they are more accepting of differences than the Were’s.” I say as she gives me a small smile handing me my cup. “You are now twenty-two and it’s time I let you in on a secret.” I look at her and she sits down opposite of me. “What would that be Aunt Sally.” I ask taking a sip of the hot tea.
“That you cannot live without your mate. If you try to, your body will start to slowly break down until your organs give out.” I gasp and almost spill my hot tea all over myself. “How do you know all of this?” I ask her as she just looks at me with a look of worry and sadness on her face. “Because that is what happened to your parents. They tried to live apart and never see each other. It wasn’t until I found out what was happening that I took your father who was at deaths door to the pack lands. Your mother wasn’t any better. They worked through their issues.” She looks at me hard. “Don’t take to long. I don’t want to have to do the same thing to you.”
I look down at my tea with tears in my eyes. “They…. He will never accept me. I’m just a wolf-less Omega.” I say as I feel her hand on mine. “Take the time you need and think, do some soul searching. I would suggest getting to know him. He might just surprise you.” I look up at her and see that small smile again. “After all your Moon Goddess wouldn’t make a mistake, right?” I nod my head and give her a soft smile back.
“Good, now go up to bed. That tea will help with the pain and healing.” I drink the last mouthful and leave my Aunt sitting at the kitchen table. I have a lot to think about and it would seem not a lot of time to do it in.
