Chapter Ten I am starting to get used to the scent of the hospital. It is a strange mixture of bleach and recycled air, covered with a strange perfume, as if to try to mask it. As I visit Dad the next day, it strikes me how many different stories are in this hospital. Each room I pass with someone inside it has their own story. Their own struggles. For some reason today, that feels overwhelming. After a terrible night of sleep, I arrive as soon as visitor hours begin. Spencer and Mom are nowhere in sight. I have no idea what they are doing to pass the time when they aren’t here. Is Spencer trying to fix the company? Is Mom drinking more? I feel more disconnected from them than I usually do.
