Chapter 2 - Breaking Fates
“I have heard stories about him. He has been conquering lands, hectare after hectare, and giving them to his people and packs under his kingdom. He values power the most, and he shows no mercy to his enemies and to everyone who crosses him. Death had always been the final verdict, nothing else. But along with his greed for power and the throne, he values his people and kingdom as well, because you know, they are his subjects, which is what gives him the power, with no constituents, then he will have nothing to lead and have power over.” she paused.
It was Katherine’s first time hearing stories about the current Alpha King of the Northern Kingdom. The Domil Pack, being so far from the palace, had kept her unaware of the royal bloodline’s tales. She only knew that her pack was part of a kingdom but didn’t know much beyond that.
“And his mate? I don’t think I saw a picture of him with a woman, except for his mother,” Katherine remarked, scanning the other portraits to see if she had missed anything.
“According to the news, he hasn’t found his mate yet. Rumor has it that he has no plans to find one either, which is why so many Alphas are presenting their daughters to him, hoping the King might take an interest. Even princesses and high-ranking ladies are trying to catch his attention,” Sandy informed as they moved away from the portraits, now observing the crowd and admiring the palace’s intricate design.
Katherine, surprised by this revelation, asked, “What? What about their mates? Shouldn’t they wait or try to find them?”
“There are plenty of werewolves who don’t want to find their mates, Katherine, for various reasons. Some prefer to be with someone they already love, others seek power above all else. Among the royal bloodlines, power often takes precedence over destiny. They choose the most suitable partner, not necessarily the one fated to them. It’s their choice, I suppose.”
“But aren’t supposed to love each other? destined to be together?” Katherine inquired again because she firmly believe about mates, and that it was the moon goddess who had weaved the bond so it must be followed and not broken.
“Yes, but we also have our own choices, Katherine. Mates are meant to love and complete each other, to bring happiness and harmony. But some wolves prefer to avoid that bond entirely. Some don’t believe in the mate bond, don’t want the attachment, or simply reject the idea of needing love. For others, it’s about avoiding the vulnerability that comes with it. A mate can be your greatest weakness, and once the bond is strong, the pain of losing them can be unbearable—so much so that one often follows the other in death. Some werewolves fear that, which is why they choose not to find their mates, or they decide to be with someone else for their own reasons,” Sandy explained.
“Is the Alpha King like that as well?” Katherine wondered.
“I do not know. He is a complicated person, and he does not really talk about those things openly to the public so, I guess, we will just have to wait for it when the time comes, either he meets his mate or he chooses someone that is not his mate. Well, it is his own decision to make, so.” Sandy shrugged her shoulders.
“But, would that not mess up the royalty? I mean, they are the royal blood, they must follow what is sacred, to have their mates.”
Sandy chuckled at Katherine’s statement.
“A lot of those royal bloods do not follow what is ‘sacred’ Katherine. A lot of them, not just those Alphas, Lunas. Their relatives, or other royal bloods also sometimes do not choose to be with their mates, and choose to follow their choices. Though yes there are those who ruled with their mates, but there are those who are not as well. But according to the history, the kingdom and the rulers are happier when the Alpha King and the Royal Luna are mates, those who did not find and choose their mates instead, ruled with an iron fist, more strict, more ruthless, more heartless… and if we apply the history now with the current Alpha, we cannot say if he would change someday when he meets his mate, or maybe he had already met her and chose not to be with her that is why he is ruthless and cold hearted like that, but we do not know, perhaps, he has not found his mate yet that is why he is ruthless, or whatever. I think we should not concern ourselves about that anymore, as long as the kingdom will live and run smoothly and it would not risk us, then I believe everything would be fine, it is their choice to make, and we cannot do anything about it.” Sandy ended and Katherine just sighed at how the royals are complicated.
~’Can’t they just be like other normal werewolves instead? who gets happy when they find their mate and rule beside each other?’ Katherine thought to herself.
Then Sandy leaned closer to Katherine as she uttered the next phrases with a very quiet voice. It is not really good to talk about bad rumors about the royal blood in their own territory.
“And you know, the previous Luna, Alpha King Luther Reeds’ mother died when she gave birth to him… However, there are rumors that circulated at that time that the Luna did not really die due to labor, it was said that the former Alpha King, her mate, Luther’s father, killed her after she gave birth, it is like he just treated her as a breeder, someone who could give him an heir and when the baby was out, she had her death.”
Katherine shivered at the news, or rumors,
~’but there could be a possibility that it was true, isn’t it? However, how cruel had it been if he really killed his mate, his other half!’ Katherine thought.
“But it was just a rumor though, perhaps to ruin the royal honor of Reeds.” Sandy cleared, shrugging her shoulders once again to brush off the thought.
However, for Katherine, it does not sound so convincing. It might have been a rumor for a reason.
