Assistant Head Elise Steven was still talking, but nobody seemed to be listening to her, everyone had their heads raised to the sky.
Violet could hear an engine, she realized. The sound grew louder and louder. It was a helicopter. The day was fading fast, and Violet peeked into the sun as she turned to watch it circulate the school, then land in the garden behind the fountain.
Violet looked at Yana questioningly.
"There is a third package," Yana said. "It is not in the brochure. It is not something you can buy."
The helicopter engine stopped and all the students pushed to get closer to view. Because Violet and Yana were seated in the back seats, Violet could already see quite clearly.
There were four of them. Even in silhouette, they were impressive. The girl with long, straight hair and with just the right amount of curves; the boys were tall and broad-shouldered. They emitted charm like a light, confident and untouchable. One of the boys turned to another and his eyes flashed in the sunlight.
"Who are they?" Violet whispered, trying to blink the sun out of her eyes.
"They are VIP Gold," Yana said. "Their lives are shining like gold, everything about them glitters like gold."
The shortest boy moved to the side, into the shade, as he spoke quietly to the girl. He had blue eyes, blond hair, and sharp cheekbones. The girl said something, and he laughed. It sounded mean, jeering. Violet shivered.
"That is Blake Evans," Yana said, covering her mouth with her hand as if people were trying to listen to our conversation. "His family owns Europe and half of South Africa. Some people say they run a betting and casino syndicate. Other people say they also run a worldwide online betting syndicate. And apparently, he is an heir to like eight different thrones. But I don't know how true that is." As Yana spoke, the glare of the light began to fade, just a little.
"And you must have probably recognized the Johnson twins," Yana continued as the girl became visible. "Especially Tiara Johnson. Her face has been everywhere lately. She missed half of last semester because she had been globe-trotting while completing her modeling assignments, and doing special people's things. But then it is not as if any teacher would ever fail her."
Violet shook her head. She had never seen that girl before. She was the kind of beauty that was so striking, one could never forget her easily. Her long black hair tumbled over her shoulders, so dark in contrast to her pale skin. There was affluence about her, somehow, even though she was dressed simply in a red sundress and ankle-length boots. There was just something that exuded from her that all these other girls lacked, despite their riches. She did not look arrogant, but rather it seemed as if she had stepped out of a mist.
"They are Johnson from the Johnson worldwide corporation, so between them, they are going to inherit the entire world. Their father owns the business world and their mother belongs to an aristocratic Scottish family," Yana shared information with Violet.
Tiara's brother had the same dark hair and pale skin, the same ethereal beauty, but there was an edge to it, a wildness. Rather than moonlight, he seemed formed from an exploding star, from the turmoil of destruction, and Violet could well believe that if you got too close to him, you would be pulled in.
He said something quietly to his sister and began to turn away toward the school grounds, but as he did, his eyes caught Violet's eyes. Although it was only for a moment, it felt like forever, as if time stopped around them. A thousand things seemed to happen at that moment. She could feel him weighing her up, judging her, and Violet wanted to prove herself worthy of him, to this strange boy. His eyes were lit with a secret light--not a glow or some reflection, but something that came from deep within, and at that moment, all Violet wanted was to understand that light.
Then he turned away, dismissing her.
"And that is Carl Johnson, of course," Yana said. "He is the worst person on the planet. He makes Tiara Johnson appear like a cuddle bunny. Hold up there, buddy, keep me away from this guy. He is too evil for me. I am not even kidding. Do stay away from Carl Johnson. He is not someone you should mess up with. I don't even know if he is human."
"But Violet did not hear most of what Yana was saying, because as Carl Johnson turned, she caught a glimpse of the boy standing behind him.
But it could not be. How was it possible? It looked like him, with his golden brown hair and light blue eyes, and a smile so bright it could melt ice caps in the North Pole. But it couldn't be. It could not be Ryan Jackson, because he had died three years ago. It was the same night that had changed everything.
But then, why and how was he standing there right in front of her?
Violet's legs gave away and she collapsed into her seat. She could not breathe. Blood rushed into her ears, blocking out all other sounds and making the rest of the world seem far away. It was as if an invisible wall had sprung up around her. That wall was closing in, cutting off the air and squeezing her heart in a tight grip. She watched everyone drift back to their seats, not registering anything that was happening. She glanced back at the spot where Ryan had stood but he was not there. Of course, he was not there. The other 'VIP Gold' students had disappeared into the gardens, but there was no way that Ryan Jackson had ever been there.
It could not have been him. It was probably just the exhaustion from all the travel catching up with Violet and giving her hallucinations or something similar. In her mind, she could still see the scene that had greeted her on that night, as clearly as if it were happening now. There had been so much blood...
