As Violet's panic began to fade, she wished she had found a spot that was less wet and cold to hide there. But she waited a little longer, just to be safe. The full moon was high over the forest, lighting the ground, so she saw clearly when the dark figure emerged from the trees. She jolted and her heart began to pound again, but it was only Carl Johnson. "Why are you in the fountain again?" he asked. "Fountains are the places where you don't get eaten by wolves," she answered. "I don't know what evidence you are basing that on," he said, staring up at her. He seemed to be amused.
