Chapter 1. Life and Death
Chapter 1. Life and Death Twenty four years ago "Is that Luna Melissa?" A new Omega broke into a cold sweat as she caught a glimpse of the woman's red and swollen eyes through the slightly ajar window. Despite the evident damage inflicted to her, not a single tear fell from the Luna's eyes. "Don't look," another Omega warned, swiftly dragging the new Omega away. "Why? Isn't she the Luna of the pack? Why are her wrists, ankles, and neck bound with silver?" The new Omega shivered at the mere thought of the pain caused by the silver restraints, yet the Luna's eyes reflected nothing but intense hatred and fury. "She brought this upon herself," the other Omega snickered before the two hurriedly scurried away. Their conversation fell on Melissa’s deaf ears. It was the sound of keys jingling followed by the click of the door unlocking that broke the silence in the room. There was a heavy, complex lock on the door, only one person had the key. Though Melissa knew it was not him, he would never bother to knock before entering. Melissa did not move; she continued on like a sentinel peering out the window. She did not bother to turn around or acknowledge the other knock on the door. She already knew who it was. The only person that ever showed her even this small sign of respect or gave her a semblance of privacy was Molly, the Beta’s mate. “Luna, the Alpha gave me the key and commanded that I bring you some food,” she informed from the other side of the door as she was sneered at by the two warriors posted there. None of the men in the pack respected women; it did not matter what her rank was. Women were only considered good for one thing: being objects for breeding. Molly knocked on the door a few more times. When she did not get a response, she finally gave up and entered. “Luna,” Molly bowed to show her the respect she deserved, though Melissa remained mute. She had a tray of food in one hand, the other hand tightly clasped a bag. She placed the bag next to the bedside table before walking over to Melissa. Dark purple bruises mottled Melissa’s neck where someone had attempted to strangle her. Her head had been cut open and was still bleeding slightly. There was a small amount of dried blood crusted on her neck. Thankfully, that wound had healed. Werewolves had amazing healing abilities, but due to the silver, it would take her ten times longer to heal than normal. Luna Melissa had both her hands cradling her bulging stomach as she looked down at the forest. “Luna, I’ve brought you some food per the Alpha’s orders. Please eat something,” Molly requested. “Leave,” Melissa finally turned to face Molly. When the women's eyes met, the Beta female could not keep her eyes from widening in horror. “Luna!” Molly blurted in panic. Melissa had a deep gash along her hairline. A blood trail down from her forehead to the underside of her chin. Her lower lip was split open, and her bottom lip looked like it was bitten. She had deep scratches down her left cheek that appeared as if someone had used their claws to rake down the smooth skin. The right side of her jaw sported a dark bruise. The beauty that her face once held had been completely ruined by the monster that had brutally beaten her. “I will not eat. You can take that away,” Luna Melissa replied. She said it casually, as if she were not in pain, but only the Goddess knew what other injuries she had sustained that were hidden from prying eyes. Melissa refused to let the wounds that she had sustained weaken her. “Please Luna, you need to eat. You need to keep your strength up for the sake of your baby. You are going to give birth any day now. But you haven't eaten or drunk anything in three days. Please don’t punish yourself. Please eat,” Molly pleaded, praying that Melissa would take pity on her. If she failed to persuade the Luna to eat and dared to take the food away, she could be killed. “Leave,” Melissa murmured, turning to face the window. “Luna, why are you doing this?” Molly asked, feeling utterly helpless. “I would rather die happy than eat and drink anything that is the fruit of this sinful pack’s lands! If I live, it will be in a place outside of this territory,” Melissa answered, scaring Molly to her very core. “Do you still want to run away, knowing what he will do if you fail?” Molly ventured to inquire, her entire body shaking. “You can not go against the Alpha’s orders, Luna. Look at the injuries that he’s inflicted on you, yet you continue to stare out that window.” She prodded but was afraid of Melissa’s answer. The passion and obsession with escaping this pack had never been hidden from Melissa’s eyes. For Molly, it was terrifying to even contemplate, as it was just an invitation for more cold, pain-filled nights. “Please don't hurt yourself any further. You are the only one I have left,” Molly cried but heard the jingle of chains moving. Melissa stopped in front of Molly to wipe her tears away. “If blood and pain will lead me to my freedom, I welcome them gladly. I still want nothing more than to escape this hell,” Luna Melissa declared, her voice echoing in the deserted room. Her declaration fell on the ears of the person whose clipped steps and powerful aura were striding towards the room, instilling terror deep into Molly’s heart. “Luna, the Alpha is here. I th… think he heard you,” Molly stammered, shaking like a leaf. “I'm so sorry. I thought he left, but he must have come back.” She whispered, her eyes focused on the door. “Luna, the Alpha is coming,” she repeated again and again. "So?" Melissa countered, her tone casual. Molly was sweating profusely, her muscles frozen with terror. "He heard everything you said. I don't know what he will do now. Please, I beg you, don't make him any angrier or he will hurt you again," Molly pleaded, gripping Melissa's hands. Alpha Richard's overwhelming aura filled the room, causing Molly to step away from Luna Melissa. She stood to the side, lowering her head. Not out of respect or loyalty, but out of pure fear. Having experienced every form of torment in this pack, Molly knew the demons of this land, especially Alpha Richard. Melissa's stubbornness and temper would inevitably lead her into further trouble. "Alpha," Molly dared to speak. "GET OUT!" Alpha Richard cut her off, his gaze fixed on Melissa. The intensity of his glare, burning with fiery rage like molten lava boring into Melissa's face, instilled panic even in the stoutest of warriors. But what frightened Molly more was Melissa's calm yet fearless blue eyes that boldly met his. Standing a few steps away, Melissa resembled an immovable wall, giving the impression that not even in death would she submit to Richard. "Alpha," Molly's wolf had an internal panic attack at the thought of the ensuing disaster. "GET THE f**k OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW!" Richard roared. His wolf’s eyes spoke of his proximity to savagery, his dominance oozing from his aura like coiling smoke, causing Molly to flinch and bare her neck in submission. She fled without looking back, descending the stairs. She had no idea where she found the courage to challenge the Alpha, but she knew it would bring trouble upon her. She had reached the bottom of the stairs when she noticed her mate standing there, William. His eyes, sharp and predatory, held nothing but bloodlust. William, the Beta of Alpha Richard, was equally cruel. He shared the same code as his Alpha and obeyed Richard without question, regardless of the command. A while ago, he had received a mind-link from Richard regarding the bold action Molly had taken back in the room. Molly froze, wishing she could die before her mate could drag her back into her own personal hell. "William, I... I was..." Molly stuttered, but her words were cut off by a harsh, stinging slap across her face. She closed her eyes and cupped her cheek, which already bore the bruises from his attention the previous evening. "HOW DARE YOU DISOBEY THE ALPHA'S ORDER!" William growled, stepping closer. Molly took a step back, desperate to escape his wrath, tears streaming down her cheeks. His mere presence was enough to make her tremble like a dry leaf. "I was just..." Molly started, her voice trembling. "Do the tasks you are given and shut the f**k up. You don't have the right to interfere with anything that belongs to the Alpha," William reminded her as he advanced, causing Molly to cower. "But... you... you are … thinking wrong. I wasn't interfering. I was trying to tell the Alp..." she attempted to defend herself, only to receive another slap. "Don't you dare sass me! That is interfering. Don't assume that just because you are my fated mate, you are a member of this pack. You are nothing but a useless b***h," William sneered. "After fulfilling your duties, you will meet the same fate as the other mates. Stay away from me and pack issues. Otherwise, I won't hesitate to kill you and throw your dead body in the woods for the animals. Do I make myself clear?" William gritted his teeth. Molly nodded in terror without hesitation. "Now get out of my sight," William shoved her away with a glare. Molly wiped at her tears but glanced back at him. "I've given you a child. What other duties are you speaking of?" Molly risked voicing her question. "Did you ever love me? did you just want me to provide you with an heir?" She finally dared to ask what was in her heart. William slowly turned to face her, an ugly frown etched on his face. "I thought I had already made this clear, yet you still have expectations?" he asked with amusement, standing in front of her. Molly flinched when he raised his hand, gently brushing his fingers across her cheek before savagely grabbing her hair and yanking her head back. "I have never loved you," he growled, forcing her to meet his gaze. “And I never will. The only reason I've kept you alive is to breastfeed my daughter, whom you gave birth to five days ago. Don't expect anything else from me. You know your place, so you should stick to it." A tear rolled down Molly's cheek, even though she was well aware of her position in his heart. "How could you say that to your mate?" she murmured. A year ago, when she had met William, she never thought he had been pretending to be a good mate only to secure an heir. However, as soon as she set foot on pack land, she discovered his true nature. The men in the Silver River Pack saw mates as a weakness and considered women to be feeble creatures. William was among the worst of them. He had taken Molly's daughter away from her, allowing her only a glimpse during breastfeeding. "Mate? Don't forget you are in this situation because of this perverse mate bond," William grinned. "Never expect love from me just because we're mates. You make me sick. The entire mate bond makes me feel like throwing up. My wolf and I hate you. In short, you disgust me." William explained, shoving her to the floor and leaving her in unbearable pain with his bitter words. Even after listening to him say those same words at least a hundred times a day, yet it hurts as if it were the first. Molly realized that her time was running out, as her life had become that of an abused s*x slave and a pathetic mother. William could kill her at any moment, but she still hopped for a miracle. "What miracle?" Her wolf spoke to her for the first time in months. "Jia?" Molly panicked. Her wolf had vanished after William's betrayal. "There won't be a miracle. Every single male in this pack has killed their mate. They are evil. They never even marked their mates before mating and impregnating them. Some never even mate. Instead, they simply kill their mates on sight, believing that mates are a weakness," her wolf explained. Molly clutched her dress tightly in her hands. This was the reality in the Silver River Pack. They were notorious for brutally killing their soulmates. Molly already knew her fate. She was terrified for Luna Melissa. Alpha Richard was the most ruthless of them all. He would stop at nothing to make Melissa suffer, even when she was carrying his child. In the room, Richard sat confidently with his legs crossed, resembling a king on his throne. Melissa positioned herself near the window, purposefully ignoring his gaze. Richard chuckled at her actions, momentarily diverting his attention to his blood-stained hand and nails, remnants of his recent hunt. "I've heard that you are still thinking of running away," Richard's voice, soft as a devil's whisper, carried a hint of challenge, daring her to admit to the claim. "Do I need to repeat myself?" Melissa's voice dripped with amusement. "I will run away," she declared nonchalantly. Her tone and demeanor displayed no sign of fear or submission, much to Richard's deep irritation. "Running away, huh? I wonder how," Richard's handsome smile concealed the numerous malicious intentions he harbored towards her for even entertaining the thought. "The chains that bind you suit you so well that I might just keep you in them, never granting you freedom." Richard had publicly chained Melissa, parading her in front of the entire pack, before dragging her back to her room as a humiliating punishment for her attempted escape. Her pitiful condition became an example for future offenders. Melissa's silence stroked Richard's ego as he admired her from head to toe. "They make you even more beautiful," he sneered. With a slow blink, Melissa responded, a faint smile gracing her wounded lips. "If these silver chains satisfy your ego, make you feel like a real man, or enable you to live in the delusion that you have tamed me, then so be it," Melissa whispered barely audibly, but it struck Richard with a sense of humiliation. "You despicable b***h!" Richard pushed his chair back, violently gripping Melissa's delicate face, forcing her to look up at him. "Are you daring to question my manhood?" An eruption of fury, akin to a pool of molten lava, flooded his eyes. "I have f****d you day and night, treating you like the w***e you are. It took only a few short days to impregnate you. You carry my heir, undeniable proof that resides within your belly." His large hand rested on her round abdomen, accompanied by an infuriating smirk. "I'm sure you haven't forgotten how you moaned and cried under me, have you? Did the pregnancy mess with your hormones that badly? Are you feeling restless?" he whispered. Melissa's body trembles with rage thinking of those nights. "This is not a child, it is a sin!" she shrieked, attempting to push Richard away, to no avail. He was stronger, and she had grown weaker over the past few days. "You kidnapped me and forced yourself upon me!" "But did not you claim that we were destined mates?" he retorted. "How can I kidnap and force you if that's the case?" Richard smiled, mocking her belief in the fabled mate bond. Melissa's gaze sharpened with sheer malice. "Indeed, I curse the day I recognized you as my mate—a monster, a womanizer, and a promiscuous man whose sole purpose in life is to achieve dominion through bloodshed. That is the person responsible for my pregnancy," Melissa sneered, boiling Richard's blood. "You dare to defy me again," Richard's eyes darkened as his primal instincts urged him to assert dominance over the woman that had offended them. "I swear, I will f**k you to death, disregarding the fact that you will soon give birth. Don’t you dare to provoke me, Melissa." "Tell me something new. All you know is how to fuck..." Melissa screamed, receiving a sharp slap across her face. "The woman who attempted to escape with my child in her womb deserves nothing more than a f**k," Richard growled, compelling her to meet his intense gaze. "I will ravish you for every second you dishonored me in front of my pack by attempting to flee with my son," he declared. Melissa pushed his hands away. "Your SON!? It seems you have misunderstood, Richard," Melissa chuckled in disgust, baffling Richard with her tone as she repeated the word. "Do you truly believe I was running away to steal your child?" She paused, placing a hand on her belly. "This is not a baby; it is a monster growing inside of me. Can you not sense the malevolence emanating from it? I know why you desire it." She shot him a meaningful glare. The room fell into silence for a couple of seconds. "Interesting..." Richard's lips curled in amusement as he stood inches away from her. "You continually astound me with your enigmatic powers, Melissa. I admit I have yet to uncover the depths of your abilities, but you are correct. My monster is growing inside you. He is what I need to conquer this world, and you cannot escape or die without giving birth. Neither you, your pack, nor even the Moon Goddess herself can stop me. Do you understand?" He brushed his lips against hers as he planted a small kiss that gradually turned possessive. He was intoxicated by her sweet scent. Melissa immediately recoiled from Richard, treating him as if he were a plague. "You will never triumph over the Moon Goddess," she proclaimed, her back straight, eyes red. "I despise the seed you have planted inside me. IT DISGUSTS ME!!!" She spat in Richard's face. "You f*****g w***e!" Alpha Richard lost control, delivering three consecutive hard slaps to her face. Melissa tumbled to the cold unforgiving floor but continued to laugh. "A w***e for a man w***e," Melissa cackled, spitting blood on the floor. Alpha Richard boiled in anger. He relentlessly slapped her, attempting to release his pent up aggression, yet the satisfaction of witnessing her in tears never materialized. His abuse stopped affecting her long ago. At this point, she felt nothing. He could never make her cry in his presence—an enormous disgrace for an Alpha like him. "You will regret this! You will regret disobeying me," he warned. "You think it makes you a man to f**k and harm a woman? Go to my father’s pack and see what a real man is!" Melissa shouted. Richard’s control snapped and he unleashed his inner wolf. "You b***h!!" He roared violently kicking her, sending her crashing to the floor on the other side of the room. "AHHH!!!" Melissa screamed in agony, her piercing cry echoing throughout the palace. Molly, downstairs, was horrified by the sound and rushed upstairs, followed closely by William. Molly was puzzled by William's panic since he had never cared for Melissa. He looked worried and angry. Molly burst into the room to find Melissa lying on the floor, surrounded by her own blood. "Luna!" Molly cried out in fear as she rushed to Melissa's side. Melissa's excessive bleeding put both her and the baby at risk. Molly placed her trembling hands over her mouth, desperate to help but feeling powerless. That's when she noticed a muddy boot print on Melissa's belly, a clear indication that Richard was responsible. Molly glanced up at Richard and William with tear-filled eyes. Both men stood together, but William's attention was solely on Alpha Richard. William's expressions conveyed a different concern, distinct from Melissa's well-being. Molly pushed aside her confusion and focused on the injured Luna. "Melissa's father's pack is attacking," William informed his Alpha. "He has come to rescue his daughter," he added with a displeased look. "That old mutt wants what?" Richard's anger merged with deranged laughter as he advanced towards Melissa. "You will be the cause of your father's annihilation, Melissa. You know who I am and what I will do to them, right?" Melissa looked up at Richard, her body trembling. "You will give birth to my son in here while I kill your father out there." Alpha Richard smiled, then slowly continued to laugh as he watched Melissa cry. He turned to leave. "Luna," Molly froze for a moment as she watched Melissa trying to sit up. Melissa took Molly's offered support, watching Richard's retreating back. She was going to lose her father and pack. They did not stand a chance against Richard and the monsters that belonged to the Silver River Pack. There would be nothing left of them but blood and corpses. They were all going to die because of Melissa. "Please don't," Molly tried to stop her. Richard stopped in his tracks to glance back at Melissa, instantly annoyed by her unwavering gaze and brave stance, even in her bloody state. Her eyes changed color, turning into a golden shade he had never seen before. His evil wolf grew alert in the presence of her strong aura and the unfamiliar energy that filled the room, making him wonder if she was the same woman he had tamed. "What the hell are you doing?" he demanded as their gazes remained locked. "Don't pretend to be brave now. Fulfill your duty and give birth to my son! Do what women are born to do!" Richard ordered. "One day, Richard, you will face the truth," Melissa spoke in a shaky, low voice. Her furious golden gaze, tinged with blood, accompanied a tear rolling down her cheek. "You are a dark stain on the titles of King and Alpha. You and your pack have never shown respect for women or mates. Soon, you will experience your reckoning. You will suffer a hundredfold for the pain you have inflicted on others. I, Melissa Dawson, beseech the Moon Goddess. If I have been a good daughter, a loyal wife, a perfect Luna, and could have been a good mother, then I request the most severe punishment for my mate and his pack of monsters!" Melissa cast a curse upon them. The ground of the Silver River Pack shook violently, as if an earthquake had struck. Apart from Melissa, everyone in the room froze in terror as the heavens opened up, unleashing a lightning bolt that struck the southern end of the palace, leaving behind only darkness. An uproar spread through the pack, accompanied by heavy rain and thunder. William and Molly stood there, paralyzed with fear. Richard remained fixated on Melissa, masking his own dread as the sounds of chaos engulfed them. "Alpha, stop her before it's too late!" William yelled before Melissa could continue. Alpha Richard moved toward Melissa, but inexplicably, he was frozen like a statue, unable to move a muscle, his eyes fixed on her. "You will be destroyed by your own seed, Richard. You will be reborn time and again, cursed to never have a mate. Your misdeeds and the blood you have shed will weigh you down. All of this will occur because you destroyed the mate bond, the very thing you despise. Your demise will come at the hands of a mate—your own son and his mate will be the cause of your death!" Melissa screamed with her remaining energy and power radiating around her. Richard's face turned ashen, goosebumps covering his body. Melissa’s strength drained as she bled profusely. She collapsed to the floor. "Luna, please stop," Molly pleaded, holding Melissa's hand. "You are losing too much blood, and the baby..." Her voice trailed off, choked with tears. Molly's words snapped Alpha Richard out of his daze. Panic surged within him at the thought of losing his son. He took a step towards Melissa, but William restrained him. "Alpha! We need to leave now! There is a bigger problem, the pack needs you. Trust me, nothing will happen to your son." William assured him, shooting a warning glare at Molly, signaling her to handle the situation. Regardless of what unfolded, the baby had to be alive upon their return. "f**k!!!" Richard growled in frustration. He approached Melissa and glared at her threateningly. "Are you finished with your theatrics and invoking the Moon Goddess? If so, focus on giving birth to my son. I don't care if you die, but don't you dare lose my son. I want him alive, or your father and pack members will not receive a proper burial. I will offer their corpses to the vultures, ensuring they are never reborn," Richard threatened before storming out of the room. Melissa experienced intense labor pains, exacerbated by Richard's abuse, but she heard his threat loud and clear. The pack doctor entered the room, and Molly sat beside the Luna, holding her hand and providing support. Melissa's contractions intensified. Amidst the excruciating screams echoing from outside, Melissa realized that her father and pack were dying because of her. Seated between Molly's legs, gripping her hands, and leaning back against her for support, Melissa pushed with all her might, desperate to deliver the child. Melissa closed her eyes, accepting that she would soon join them in death. With one final powerful push, the baby emerged. Melissa, slipping into darkness, heard nothing more. "It's a boy," the doctor declared, cleaning the baby's nose and mouth. However, his hand halted when the baby failed to cry. "Is he dead?" a midwife asked in horror. The doctor tried to stimulate the baby, slapping his bottom multiple times, attempting to elicit any sound, but there was only silence. He glanced up at Melissa, whose eyes remained closed, her chest motionless. Blood covered the bed and dripped onto the floor—a result of excessive bleeding. "The Luna and her son are dead." He gently placed the baby boy on the bed next to Luna. "No!" Molly cried, hugging Melissa's lifeless body. The doctor rushed out of the room to inform Alpha Richard of the heartbreaking news before facing potential consequences for the delay. Alpha Richard had stationed numerous guards to protect the palace gates. The battle raged fiercely, and the number of casualties was too high to be counted. The ground had transformed into a blood-soaked swamp. "ALPHA! ALPHA!" the doctor called from a distance, attempting to capture Richard's attention. Alpha Richard swiftly snapped the neck of the wolf in his grasp and turned to face the doctor. The doctor's nervous gulp was evident upon seeing Richard and his wolf's red eyes. "WHERE IS MY SON?" Alpha Richard roared, advancing towards the doctor. The doctor dropped to his knees, exposing his neck in fear. Alpha Richard had listened to Melissa's screams, waiting for the birth of his son, but he could never hear his son's cries, and it filled him with rage. The doctor's expression triggered his fury. "We lost both the Luna and the child. I'm sorry, but your son was stillborn," the doctor replied. "No..." Richard froze, consumed by anger at the loss of his son. His sanity unraveled, leaving him with a single desire—to kill. "What? How is this possible?" William growled in disbelief, unable to process the unexpected news. Richard's sense abandoned him. He shifted into his wolf form, growling like a beast as he unleashed violence upon the enemy, breaking their necks, tearing them apart with teeth and claws. The members of the Silver River Pack trembled, terrified by their Alpha's wrath, quickly fleeing to save their own lives. Richard fixed his gaze on Melissa's father, engaged in combat and slaying many of the wolves from the Silver River Pack. Richard mentally commanded William and the rest of his pack, instructing them to surround Melissa's father without delivering a fatal blow. That prey belonged to him and him alone. Within seconds, the old Alpha found himself surrounded, yet he fought on relentlessly. Nearly all his pack members had perished. Mid-air, Richard shifted back into his human form, seizing a silver rod from the ground. Though it burned his hand, he paid no mind—the pain only fueled his anger. He wasted no time, swiftly driving the rod into Melissa's father's heart. As the old Alpha drew his final breath, Richard's ears perked up at the sound of a baby's cry. Richard glanced at the palace in astonishment for a moment before rushing into Melissa's room. Everyone in the bedroom was stunned, terrified, and trembling at the sight of the crying baby that had seemingly been lifeless moments ago. A terror had filled in the room, none of them daring to move and were holding their breaths except Alpha Richard. Richard approached the child with a wickedly proud smile. His son, a monster awakened by the death of his adversary. He cradled the baby in his arms, laughing, and stepped out onto the balcony. The pack members below gasped upon beholding the newborn, as Richard proudly displayed his son to them. "This is my son, your Alpha Prince," he declared, witnessing the fear in everyone's eyes. Richard brought the baby close to his chest, carefully inspecting him. "This is Alpha Prince Egon," he whispered. Every wolf howled into the dark sky, celebrating the birth of the Alpha's son and the demise of their enemy. Richard entered the room, carrying his son in his arms and closing the doors behind him. "My son. My monster. My Egon."
