“They don’t want you leaving the ship,” she repeated.
“Ya think?” I said.
“It makes sense,” Warren commented. “People are always criticizing Kirk for that. The captain shouldn’t leave the ship to go on dangerous Away Missions. His first duty is the safety of the ship, not satisfying his curiosity by walking around on strange planets.”
So here I am, stuck aboard the ship. Like a little kid stuck at home with measles, everyone else gets to go out and play while I watch from the window.
I think I cried a little. I know there was a time when no one seemed to speak and no one was looking at me. But it couldn’t have gone on too long because it’s not good for a crew to see their captain cry. And especially not a captain who’s going to be famous someday.
