Patience Is A Virtue

Liwan took a deep breath. He messaged his friends through their group chat. “Are you sure it’s Melvin?” Denver asked. Jayson followed. “How did you know it was him?” Liwan has long prepared his answers for those questions. He spun his web of lies without batting an eyelash. “I asked his in game name yesterday.” “Huh? When? Melvin is not our classmate. The only chance you had to talk to him was at the cafeteria. Which, if my memory serves me right, you didn’t.” Jayson was skeptical. “I met him at the men’s room. And if my memory serves me right, I asked Mr. Hong for permission for a bathroom break in the middle of his lecture about Chinese dynasties.” “Touche.” Denver posed another question. “What are you going to do now?” “Nothing. I’ll pretend I don’t know him. I’ll have to take another route to get into the abandoned cemetery. I’ll bid my time until I’m strong enough to take him on. That son of a b***h has played non-stop since the opening of the game so naturally he’s a lot stronger than me.” “But the level gap between you and Melvin will continue to increase. You can never catch up to him.” “Not necessarily. Believe me, he’ll be stuck at 150 like most of the players,” Liwan refuted Jayson’s statement. Even without the help of his knowledge of the game from the future, Liwan knew the level of difficulty of the first major quest for all character classes. A 150-level quest is a promotion quest. There are two promotional levels for each class before the proficiency quest. Like for example, Liwan’s character is a Chevalier. The first promotion stage will elevate the character from simple Chevalier into Dragon Chevalier. The next stage is Grand Dragon Chevalier. After two promotions comes the proficiency quest where one would have to choose between speed and strength proficiencies. If a Chevalier chooses speed proficiency, the character’s build would lean on speed, single handed weapons, and light armors. For strength proficient Chevaliers, it’s the total opposite of the speed proficiency. The character’s build would lean on strength for maximum damage output, double handed weapons and bulky armors. Although speed proficient Chevaliers doesn’t have the same damage output compared to strength proficient Chevaliers, their advantage would lie on their attack success rate due to their speed. To make it simple, a blow from a strength sufficient Chevalier is equivalent to three successive blows from a speed proficient Chevalier. The damage output doesn’t sorely rely on the character’s strength or attack success rate. The game also put in consideration a character’s gear quality. Right build and gear quality contribute will to a character’s overall strength. It’s up to the player to find a balance between the elements to make the most out of his character’s potential. After the proficiencies is the last promotion, the Supreme. But in this stage of the game, Supreme level is not yet available. That update would come in later to the game after a year, when almost 95% of the characters since the launch of Soulnight have reached the maximum level which is 400. “Stuck at level 150?” Liwan chuckled. “Yes, Denver. Haven’t you read the guide? It’s been posted online by the game admins.” “He he. I’m not the reading type. I’m more of the hack and s***h type of player.” To be honest, Liwan used to be the same. But this time around, he’s going to correct that in himself. “I’ve read the guide. But there was nothing there that says people would get stuck at that level.” “Not in so many words, Jay. How many times have you read the guide by the way?” “Ahm…twice?” “I’ve read the guide over ten times. If you have the patience to deconstruct the author’s sentences, you’ll find hints here and there. Whoever wrote that, he or she provided enough clues.” “Really?” “Yep.” “Whoa. And did you find those clues, Liwan?” Jayson asked. “What do you think?” Liwan then sent a smirking emoji. “When have you grown brains?” Denver teased. “Excuse me? I was born smart. It’s my choice when to use my brain.” “Right, right. Would you please enlighten us?” Liwan smirked as he typed. “Call me Lord.” “Aw,” Jayson complained. “Ha ha! We’ll talk about that later. For now, our priority is to reach level 20 and finish the quest so we can party and grind experience much faster.” “Okay.” Liwan made his character move. He went to the same Sidhe under the tree to acquire defense and damage blessing. This time, he did not use the north gate. Instead, he went to the east gate which directly took him to a wide grass plain. Normal spiders and hounds occupied the area, something a low level character like him can completely take on solo. He decided to stay in that area while grinding experience. Within two hours, his level jumped from 10 to 20. He went back to the safe zone to unload his bag of his loot to which he sold at the tavern for coins. He then replenishes his stock of potions. Then he went to the blacksmith for his gears to get repaired before he set off to fulfill his pending quest. On his way out of the blacksmith’s workshop, he met Melvin’s character whose name floating at the top of his head is now colored crimson. When a player kills another player outside the dueling arena, the system will automatically tag that character as a killer after three consecutive kills. It will take twenty four hours for the status to be cleared. But Liwan chose to ignore the guy. Every dog has its day. And today, he’d give it to Melvin. He was never a patient guy. But his experiences taught him a lot so he will not repeat the same mistake when he was sixteen. Liwan walked past Crimson Cloud. Crimsom Cloud is a Magus, a character who employs powerful spells. In the early stages of Soulnight, Magus are powerful compared to other classes simply because everyone uses low level equipment and skills are not yet upgraded. Yet, Magus has already has an arsenal of powerful spells in their belts. So it wasn’t surprising that many created such characters compared to Chevaliers or other classes. But later, the game developers will correct that imbalance, stripping Magus of their overwhelming advantage. Liwan’s character Blade walked briskly towards the north gate. Crimson Cloud would be busy for a while repairing his gear.
