I couldn’t imagine being sane. Never. Blackness outside the diner. Swirls of ash, dust, and human debris floating like clouds as the wind current blew from west to east. I smelled burning flesh: sour, like rubber, and meaty. New China all around me. A retired America outside the diner’s glass windows. Hell beyond the windows. A different world and life. * * * * “Kal, you’re drifting again.” I sneered at Sander across the table. “You in your apocalyptic world again?” I nodded. “I can’t help it. It’s what I do.” He shook his head, judging me, thinking me insane.
