Chapter 12: Carter Nickle Carter Nickle lived up to his ex-Marine title, experienced with weaponry, a gruff personality, and no charm. He had paid Uncle Sam his dues, fighting in the Iraq War and Afghanistan. He retired three years ago with a chest covered in medals, but didn’t have a dime to his f*****g name. Carter borrowed the seven grand from Sander, which he never paid back. Sander drove there to collect his money, to take back what belonged to him, with or without Carter’s consent. We climbed out of the Caddy, walked through the opened gate, and circled to the back. On the left of the farmhouse, we discovered an open window to the kitchen. Sander entered the house through the window. He piggy-backed me, climbed up on my shoulders as if I were a mountain, and wiggled inside. I enter
