3. Oh, MINE!

Clair    I was in the kitchen helping Imogene decorate some of the appetizers. The place was chaotic, omegas running everywhere and making the gigantic kitchen feel small and overcrowded. They all wanted everything to be perfect. I took a tray of mini shepherd pies and was about to leave the kitchen to serve the food when I was almost run over by a girl. “Oh, no! That’s for the Alphas, let me be the one to take it!” The bubbly Omega girl, who was ogling the Alpha earlier, told me as she took the tray from my hands.  I gazed at her with a confused look. “It’s not like you are even excited to see them…” she said, not unkindly. She was right and if it was that important to her, let her do it. I guess I would spend the whole night in the kitchen and it would be fine by me.  “It’s okay,” I replied and went back to help Imogene.  After some time, we were supposed to start serving the main dish; grilled steaks. Wolves really appreciated meat, Alphas even more so. The steaks were served on massive trays and three to four people were necessary to carry it to the table.  Once again, I was about to let the bubbly girl and the other Omegas go serve the guests when I heard my mom’s scolding voice.  “Don’t only stay in the kitchen Clair, we need more people to serve the food. Those trays are too heavy! Remember dear, we shall always go where we are needed.” My mom graced me with one more of her typical sayings.  I was not an ungrateful daughter, I loved my mom, but it didn’t mean our relationship was easy; I wanted to live a life of my own, while she wanted me to follow the handbook on how to be the perfect omega. I held one of the sides of the tray and walked with the other omegas towards the dining room. My mom was right, it was really heavy.  “This one goes to the Alpha’s table.” Imogene couldn’t contain her low squeal. I fought against the urge to roll my eyes.  On the way to the main table, I saw Sarah and she smiled at me. She was the best! The only person that believed in me.  An odd, but very good scent entered my nostrils. It was earthy and fresh, sandalwood and lemongrass. I took a lungful of it, which almost made me dizzy, intoxicated. I felt something deep inside me, in my wolf spirit, stirring. I knew what it meant. Oh, Goddess! But I’d already met all the omega males that were working here. Who could possibly be my mate then? Maybe one of the ranked wolves brought an omega servant with their entourage. That must have been the case.  As we were approaching the Alphas’ table, time appeared to slow down, or maybe it was my intoxicated mind that couldn’t register anything but the amazing smell. The other omegas and I were about to place the heavy tray onto the table, when he turned around and my gaze met the deepest and most piercing grey eyes. My breath stopped for a moment, I didn’t know if it was out of shock or amazement. It couldn’t be… he was an Alpha; my wolf spirit went insane and was making me hallucinate! But then a guttural word escaped his full lips, “MINE!”  It wasn’t only in my mind, he felt it too. It was true, but it couldn’t be! Omegas were only mated to omegas; it was how things were and always have been. Alphas, on the other hand, were mated to the strongest she-wolves, in other words, anything but omegas.  Oh, mine! Before I even noticed, my hands let go of the tray; I just came out of my trance when I heard Imogene and the other omegas muttering and roaming around. “Goddess, the food!!” I heard my cousin’s voice, full of worry.  “It’s all on the floor! Forgive us, Alphas,” another waitress said.  I was still paralyzed there, my gaze moved a little and I looked around, the food on the floor, the male… the Alpha at the table looking at me intently. His face also showed pure shock.  I looked at him so thoroughly, that I could somehow engrave all traces of him into my mind. His tanned skin, his very dark brown hair falling onto his forehead, his sharp nose, his strong jawline. Oh, and the gruff stubble around his full, reddened lips. Alphas were normally very strong and handsome, but this one was more than that! I shouldn’t be looking at an Alpha like this, what if his wolf took it as a challenge?! Besides that, I was ogling him!  No man had ever had such a strong effect on me! Not even a little fraction of it.  I dragged my eyes away, fighting the magnetic force that attracted my gaze to him, and looked back at the food on the floor. The other omegas were running around trying to clean everything.  “Clair? Will you just stand there like a statue?” Imogene’s soft voice brought me back from my haze. I was going in and out of my trance, it was amazing and… a bit disturbing. I’d never lost control of myself like this before. “Clair, help us.” She said pulling my arm down, I looked at her, she was crouched down on the floor, cleaning my mess.  I started to help the other omegas clean everything and we left, but not before I glanced at him once more. His eyes were still glued on me, but he didn’t say or do anything.  I went back to the kitchen with the other omegas, carrying a whole bunch of ruined steaks. Everyone gaped at me.  “What happened?” the head of the Omegas, Leslie, asked.  She had a big scowl on her face. She was very scary, especially to an omega. Not that she was tall and strong. Omegas were normally much shorter and had a smaller constitution in comparison to regular wolves. I, for example, stood at 5’2 feet tall, being even taller than the average 5-foot omega female.  The other girls told her everything and she was about to scold me like the mean school principal we were all scared of when we were pups, when the door opened. I turned around and saw my guardian angel: Sarah.  Sarah pulled me out of the kitchen with her, of course, neither Leslie, nor anyone else said anything, they had high respect for ranked wolves. Too high sometimes, to the point of being totally blind and following their word like trained dogs.  “What happened? Is Alpha Hunter your mate?” she asked. Of course, she and probably everyone else saw and heard everything. An Alpha claimed me and I literally dropped a 30 kg tray of food, those are not things that go unnoticed.  Hunter, so that was his name. It was fitting, he surely would haunt my dreams from now on. I just hoped that this whole situation didn’t turn into a nightmare.  “Yes… I don’t know how it can be, but he is,” I replied.  He was my mate, it was not something I could deny.  Deep inside, I felt that he was my mate, my soul was trying to reach for him, and was begging me to be close to him. Yet, I wondered where he was now.  Not here.  “My dear, the Goddess works in mysterious ways. We never know what she is planning for us.” Sarah said with a smile, she was always so positive. “Come on, Clair! Don’t make that face! You found your mate, it’s an amazing thing! Many go through life without finding the one who holds the other part of their souls.” I could hear the happiness in her voice.  Sarah was right and I knew it to be her case, her mate died before she reached mating age, 18 years old; so, she could never be with him.  I breathed deeply. Even without planning to, yet again I broke one more of the unwritten rules for omegas, I had an Alpha for a mate.
