Luke awoke to someone shaking his shoulder. Maggie, the Wrights’ housekeeper, was looming over him. “Sir, there’s someone downstairs to see you.” Luke rubbed his eyes. His bedroom was still dim; the sun hadn’t even risen yet. “Is it an emergency? Is someone bleeding?” “No blood, but she insisted.” Any sleepiness he felt disappeared in that moment. “She” could only mean one person. “Show her to my office.” After quickly dressing, he hurried to his office, his heart pounding in anticipation. He wasn’t sure if he was more excited about Jocelyn telling him yes or telling him to go to hell. Jocelyn was standing in front of his desk, her arms crossed. She had her hair down, which was unusual for her. Luke had to admit he couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen her without her hair in a ti
