Chapter 4
Cassiopeia’s pov
So, as asked, I packed up my new room and went to sleep wondering how my life was going to change in the morning. All my family linked me to tell me that they loved me, and Granny C told me to link her when I needed blood, and she would have someone available for me.
I knew the blood would now taste horrible to me, but at present, my new beloved had no idea what or who I was, saying I need his blood may just blow my cover for me. So, garbage tasting blood for the foreseeable future it is. At least being a hybrid, I don’t need to feed quite as often and should manage every 3 days or so.
In the morning, I was delighted to hear the lovely and kind Catherine would be joining us at my beloveds coven. The woman was trying to act all nice with me today after being such a bossy cow yesterday. She smelled a bit too much like my beloved for my liking, but I acted dumb, as how else you I explain my vampire senses.
He also smelled of magic and not the usual sage scent that all witches and wizards carry. This was a potion that I was unfamiliar with. Along with my gift of sight, I can smell even the smallest amount of magic, and usually, I can tell what the spell or potion is.
Every witch or wizard with a certain amount of power can smell magic and potions to a degree, except the royals as we mask it naturally. With me, it is more a sniff is all it usually takes to tell what it is. If I can’t identify it, it is a new one I don’t know, and I don’t like it, it smells nefarious something the world doesn’t need.
He didn’t even bother to ask about my poor ailing grandmother who brought me up, mum made sure to tell me in front of him that they would look after her as a thank you to all her years of service. He looked embarrassed at not even considering the woman.
Danica his mother offered to have her in her coven and make sure she was looked after, but I politely refused, telling her that granny was stubborn and wanted to live out what time she had at home. It was believable, and with her health, no one expected her to see me off when I had already said my private goodbyes to her.
I mean, it technically isn’t a lie. I did say goodbye to Granny and Gramps, my human grandparents who brought up mum. It is just a little stretch of the truth the rest of it. I won’t feel guilty as I know for a fact Jacob is huding things from me.
I will be myself as much as I can be with him and everyone around me. They just don’t know my true status and power. I don’t like lying to people, but I have to follow my grans advice as she wouldn’t have seen it if it wasn’t important. My people are too important to risk the wrong person ruling next to me.
I wonder if he used to be good but someone corrupted him along the way, or why else would the moon goddess have mated him to me in the first place. He has to have a good side to him so maybe finding his beloved will bring that back, I need to give him a proper chance and not judge him prematurely no matter what I have seen and felt so far.
My ever so kind beloved took Catherine back first, stating he didn’t want me to be left alone for a second in my new surroundings. I mean, someone else could have taken her, but sure, we will go with that. He didn’t hang about reappearing almost instantly.
As he took my hand, I felt the tell-tale tingles of the bond that threatened to consume me. It feels magical for a reason, how will I resist this. I am relieved when we find ourselves in a room and he let’s go of my hand.
“This will be your room just now, I know all this is a lot, so I thought you would want your own space until we know each other better and you settle in” he says, and he seems genuine, it’s times like these that grandma Morgana is useful as she can tell if someone is truthful or not without the use of spells or potions.
“Thank you for being so considerate” I say with a smile, and he smiles back with a hint of relief in his eyes.
“Come I will show you around” he says again, taking my hand and making my brain spin.
His room is directly across from mine. He points it out quickly before moving on and showing me the rest of the coven. I know the general layout, as a future ruler it was important for me to know the covens that will be under my care in the future.
When we have seen most of the important parts, he then takes me to his mother’s private potion room. She is there when we enter, and she looks so genuinely happy to see me. This room is just for the leaders family, although I know Jacob must have his own one that he has failed to show me on our tour.
“Ah Cassie dear, I hope my son is looking after you” she says, giving him a pointed look.
“He has been the perfect guide. He has been an absolute gentleman as he makes sure I get settled in” I reply to her, making her smile.
“Now dear I am not sure where your aptitude is, but you are welcome to use my spell and potion room whenever you like, even if I am in here” she says with such warmth I know she means it.
“I am actually quite good at potion making, especially ones that are connected to health and healing” I tell her honestly.
“Well that is wonderful. It is always good to have effective cures. Did your parents or grandmother teach you?” She asked, interested.
“It was actually the Queen who got me interested. When I was at a loose end growing up, she would teach me along with her children. She liked that I was as interested as she was in it, and I ended up being the one she taught most for it” I replied again honestly as I did train with her along with her children. Goddess, the truth is going to keep getting stretched while I am here, but I will try and be as honest as possible.
Danica ended up inviting me to stay with her and familiarise myself with the room, and promised to have me back to Jacob at dinner. She wanted to bond, and I was happy to stay. She was the most authentic one here, and unfortunately, that included me as well.
Jacob happily left us to bond, and we had a lovely afternoon making potions together. She was impressed by my abilities and was happy that I was familiar with all the ones they used most often. Between us, we managed to refill the healers cupboard of all the ones they were running low on.
I even showed her how to personalise the transformation potion. She had said that her results were random, so I showed her how to tweak it so you can get the colour of hair, eyes, or skin that you wanted. She was as delighted as a kid on Christmas to get the hang of it.
From what I gathered, she is not a fan of Catherine, so she decided that she would be the guinea pig for her new potions. Who am I to argue with the coven leader. So, like a good girl, I was going to keep my mouth shut and see what happened.
She decided to go for orange hair, not a beautiful red/ginger like Crimson and Regina. No, this sh.it is fluorescent, along with some creepy bright green eyes that also change the shape to look like snake eyes. She decided to go all out and go for it instead of trying simple little changes. I was excited to see the results.
When we got to the dining room, she snuck into the kitchen first to get a staff member to slip it in Catherine’s drink. Apparently, the woman will only drink one type of wine, so it is always there just for her. Her daddy sends it specially for his princess.
The staff member brings a filled glass for he and leaves her the bottle so she can have as much as she wants. Danica starts to sing my praises as soon as we sit down, telling them all about how her work has been more than halved with me there.
Hell, even Jacob looks genuinely impressed with what she is saying as if he is seeing me for the first time. That I may actually be worthy of being in his presence. Although they change to shock as his father Jeremy starts laughing while looking at Catherine.
Jacob looks horrified, and when she sees her reflection, she screeches and starts blaming every person in sight for making her look so hideous.
“Oh do be quiet Catherine, it will wear off by tomorrow. It worked perfectly. You really are a gem, I could never get the hang of that one before” Danica said while clapping delightedly.
