My silence was more powerful than words. Meghan grabbed her pocketbook, turned her back on me, and reached for the doorknob. She paused. She still had her back to me as she said, "Oh, my God. Then it's true. You guys are-" She left the sentence unfinished. The words hung in the air and then fell into nothingness. She never looked back at me when she left. For the first time in her life, Meghan closed a door quietly. I sat there at my newspaper desk immobile for the longest time. I can't even say I was thinking some profound thought or brilliantly analyzing what happened. I didn't feel anything. My mind was numb. I slowly reached for my cell phone and sent Key a text message saying I couldn't meet him after practice. Then I got up from the desk and walked out of the newspaper
