Girlfriends

“I'll just indirectly tell her to keep this a secret from everyone in the class,” I whisper to Jude. “Do that, please,” he nods, letting me go. Feeling like a walking lump of nerves, I walk to where she's sitting—at the corner of the room. John leaves her with a laugh before turning to me. He widens his eyes and drops his jaw while his lips are closed, showing how troubled he is. I gotta fix this. They continue singing but hesitating to drink or even just talking to their girlfriends. We're silent around the table, just picking snacks from it. It feels like they're waiting for me to do something. “Do you guys have a can of light beer?” Irene asks out of nowhere. It took a second before John smiles like he doesn't mean it and says, “Uh... we have no-” “It's okay, guys. I drink too. Don't worry, I won't tell.” Their worrying faces become bright all of a sudden after hearing that. They laugh and Jude gives her a cold one from the bucket. “I thought we were in trouble!” he laughs. “I thought so too,” sighs Rick. “You gave me a little heart attack, Kev,” says Ian, grinning and shaking his head. “What are you guys talking about?” Irene questions. “It's normal to drink and have fun like this. There's no need to hide it.” She opens the can of beer and pours it into the glass, letting it foam. She drinks underneath the foam and sighs while smiling. Everything comes back to normal now. They aren't ashamed of drinking and flirting with their girlfriends. I'm mesmerized by how Irene looks with foam on her upper lip. She looks unaware of it. “You have foam... on your-” “Oh, really?” she exclaims, wiping it with a tissue paper. “Thank you.” “You're welcome,” is all I could say. “By the way, what's happening between you two?” John touches on the subject while eating chips. “Uh...,” I hesitate but then look at Irene to ask. “Is it okay for me to tell-” “Yeah, it's fine.” “We're getting to know each other,” I tell them. “Oh... nice!” “Well, I hope that it will go smoothly between the two of you! You guys look good together!” Way to make me uncomfortable! I just smile at him while trying to hide it. After that, we just went along with them, singing and drinking. Chloe—John's girlfriend is a shy one but is very very very good at singing. It's not that I'm judging or anything but if I could put her in a girlfriend tier-list, she would be SS-class. *Teir rank from best to worst is as follows: SS, S, A, B, C.* Chloe is sweet, knows how to cook, reads a lot of novels, pretty, talented in calligraphy, singing, and writing, of course. The way he met her is very awesome and romantic. It started when he bumped on her when he was practicing basketball. She was hurt so he was worried that she might think badly of him. He kept bothering her by apologizing but she was too shy that she couldn't answer. John is persistent until I don't know, they just fell in love, and in our second year in college, he introduced her to us as his girlfriend. She was shy when he introduced her but John is kind and cares for her. He's an SS-class boyfriend too. I saw his effort in making her happy in their every monthsary, her birthday, and Valentine's Day. They're lucky to have each other. It's been a year since then and their relationship is smooth as glass. Anna—Ian's girlfriend is SS-class too. Very witty, mildly talkative, and pretty. She's very smart in numbers because she's a math major. We often ask her for help when we have to study a topic with computations. And hell... she's a genius! Jude is the smartest among us (boys... and technically, these girls are smarter than us). Not only that but also, she's into table tennis and drawing. We sometimes talk about drawing too. Next up is also an SS-class. Angel—Rick's girlfriend. She's short and that's what makes her so cute. She has glasses, braces, has a very white skin tone that could rival Eli's, and straight bouncy hair that would rearrange itself if she brushes it upwards. She comes from a rich family, is at the top of her class, is talented in acting, watercolor painting, and then calligraphy—just like Chloe so they get along well. Angel has a very bright future. I don't doubt it. They were already couples when they went here to study for college. She's studying political science. Jude's girlfriend, Jane is the artsiest one. That's what makes her SS-class. Her skill in painting is insane! She's a genius. She can even draw your face realistically—something I wish I had the skills. All I could do is digital art but not good enough. Whenever there's a poster-making contest, she nails it. Her looks are as much like Angel but her hair is naturally wavy and she's a little taller. Like Rick and Angel, Jude and Jane were already a couple before going here. If Eli was a girl, she would be... SSS class. Wait... why am I thinking about her? “The girlfriends of your friends are so pretty, aren't they?” Irene whispers at me. I'm still nervous and uncomfortable because we're the only ones that are not official yet. Impressed—I am that she is not feeling awkward like me. She handles this pretty well. “Uh... yeah but...” I move closer to her to whisper, “you're the prettiest.” She gasps a little, looks away from me, hiding her face entirely.
