Chapter fiveFor a moment both the Dowager and Tina stood as though they were turned to stone. Then, with a little cry of consternation, Tina fell on her knees beside Lord Wynchingham. She thought that he was dead and a feeling of numbness seemed to take possession of her so that she could feel nothing, but only watch with horrified eyes a flood of crimson blood spreading over the satin of his coat just below the shoulder. Then, even as he stirred and opened his eyes, people seemed to appear from nowhere and the noise above their heads was a confusion of shouts and cries – the Dowager’s voice giving almost incoherent orders, men running to every corner of the garden. Lord Wynchingham stared up at her. She could see his face quite clearly in the light of the illuminations on the branche
