Chapter 8: With Him

1596 Words
What happened this morning flooded to her mind, and she stood there stupefied, rooted to the ground. Her face was slightly hot, feeling a bit of disbelief that she actually embarrassingly had fallen asleep during Lorenzo’s company. “Alana? Are you awake yet?” Someone knocked on the door, making her flustered. She bit on her lips, then walked to open the door. Lorenzo was standing outside the door. His hair was still wet, as if he had just come out from the bathroom. When he stepped closer and put his hand on her forehead, she could even smell the soap on him. “I am going to invite a doctor. I’ll call her right away.” He said as he stepped back. He handed the package he had been holding to her hand, and she accepted it whilst still in a daze. Even after he turned around and left, she could still smell the lingering pleasant scent. She recovered herself a moment later and almost forgot what she was about to do. There was food in the package that he handed to her. She put it on the table and began to take a shower. When she came out, Lorenzo was already back. She didn’t bring her clothes, so she used the one she was wearing again. Speaking of clothes, she asked him. “The one who changed my clothes…?” “It’s the auntie housekeeper who came to take care of the house,” he explained, and she heaved a sigh of relief. “Don’t worry about the clothes, it’s new. I have never used them before.” “The doctor will be here in half an hour. You skipped lunch. Have you eaten your dinner?” He asked, reminding her of her naggy brother. “Do you want to have dinner together?” Alana assumed that he also hadn’t eaten his dinner yet. At this hour, he probably just returned from his office. “Let’s go downstairs.” He nodded, taking the package in one hand and grabbing her hand in the other. She blinked in surprise and couldn’t help but ask him. “Why do you have to hold my hand…?” “You are a patient now. I have to make sure that you walk safely. What if you feel weak because you didn’t eat your lunch and fell?” He raised an eyebrow. She rolled her eyes at him. Was she that weak? Skipping one lunch wouldn’t make her unable to walk. “Your brother was looking for you.” She nearly tripped. Luckily, he was ready to catch her, as if he had expected this reaction when he dropped the bomb. He pulled the chair, and she sat on it. She looked impatient as she stared at him. “What did he say? What did you say to him? How was his tone of voice? His expression too?” “He is not in another city right now.” He watched as the girl heaved a sigh of relief, her hand on the chest, and she took a few more deep breaths to calm herself down. She narrowed her eyes and accused him. “Why didn’t you say that earlier? Nearly scaring me.” That’s right. Had he been available in the city, her brother would definitely rush here and drag her back home. He didn’t seem to like that she sometimes was being too close to Lorenzo. “I was about to tell you, but you suddenly bombarded me with those questions.” He also sat down. She grunted. As cold and strict as he was outside, she knew that this man wasn’t like this inside. In fact, if he was paired with her brother, they would even dare to raze a mountain to the ground. He must have been teasing her. “What did my brother say?” She asked after a long pause of silence. If her brother was on a business trip somewhere, it meant that he might have called her phone and asked people at home after a few unanswered phone calls. Another strong possibility was that her father had called him after seeing that she had gone out in a rage, though the possibility was low. “He was asking if I know where you were. I told him you are in my house.” He curved his perfect lips into a teasing smile. She froze after hearing that. Her mouth opened and closed again. “Don’t tease me and say it appropriately!” He raised his eyebrows. “You are quite demanding.” She kept on staring at him unblinkingly, as if she could intimidate him with her stare. He already knew that behind her quiet and sometimes cold temperament, she was actually short-tempered. There was a flash of emotions in his eyes. This girl was no longer as awkward and withdrawn with him now. This was a side she rarely showed to people. “I really said that.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I couldn’t say that you are running away from home, right?” She frowned, in a deep thought. Then she just waved her hand and shook her head. “Forget it. As long as he isn’t angry, I am safe.” The girl began to wolf down her food quickly. But after she realized that there was someone else in the room, she coughed and ate it more slowly. Lorenzo only raised his eyebrows at her antics. They both enjoyed the dinner with a comfortable silence. Shortly after they finished dinner, the doctor arrived. It was a middle-aged woman with red hair, looking very kind. She was one of the private doctors that the Miller family hired. Upon seeing Lorenzo with a girl earlier and even requested her to come twice, she had curiosity in her eyes, but she knew her place and didn’t ask much. After she checked up on Alana and prescribed the medicine, the doctor left. “How are you feeling now?” Lorenzo asked. “It’s much better.” She said, “Not as itchy or painful anymore. Thank you.” She sat up on the bed, then realized with more self-consciousness that there were only two of them in the room now. A sudden awkwardness hung in the air. “Sorry, it must have been a lot of trouble to take care of me.” She had her gaze on the floor. “Don’t mention it.” He had his hand in the air, but because of hesitation, he retracted it back, afraid of scaring her. The sudden phone call from her phone interrupted the two. Alana saw the name of the caller and bit her lips before she rejected the call. Besides from her brother, and surprisingly, father, there was an unsurprising call from Albert. She had already guessed the reason he was calling her without even picking up the call. After all, even though she was still already separated from him due to her scandal, she was still his assistant. For Cecil, she must have been a thorn in her eye. Because, even after she managed to replace the status of his fiancee, his ex-fiancee was still working closely with him. However, the fault didn’t entirely lie in her. It was also Albert who still let her become his assistant. There was some damage to pay if she were to breach the contract, so she had to abide by the rule. After secretly promising herself not to rely too much on her family, she didn’t ask them for help either. So, she just would follow the contract until it ended. He could have fired her, but he didn’t. “Alana?” She snapped out of her daze, just realizing that Lorenzo had been trying to gain her attention. “Ah, sorry, what did you say again?” “I asked whether you want to go home. I can take you there. Your car is still in the parking lot near the lake.” He explained, then added another sentence. “If you want to stay here, it will be no problem, too.” “Who are you talking to that got you so engrossed in the conversation?” He suddenly asked before she could even answer his first question. “I don’t want to trouble you too much, so I will trouble you to take me home.” She grinned at him. Then, she shook her head, “I didn’t chat to anyone, just simply checking my phone.” The two didn’t continue the conversation anymore, as it was getting late. Lorenzo started the car, and she got in, still wearing his clothes because she had no other choice. The ride took more than forty minutes before she arrived at her home. Tomorrow, after she took back her brother’s car, she would surely return to her apartment. Her brother had a lot of cars and even gifted her some on her previous birthdays. Jayden wouldn’t mind if she took that one to her apartment, but unfortunately, her garage was also full. “Miss, you are back.” She got out of the car and instantly was greeted by the family’s butler. Lorenzo had excused himself early, even though she had invited him in because he suddenly had an urgent matter coming up. “Alana, who is that?” Olivia suddenly came from behind her. Her voice was raised all of a sudden, and her eyes narrowed. “What did you do going out all day with a random man?!”
