Later that afternoon when all classes were over Wolf asked the Raven, and Grace asked Lady Jane for permission to go hunting. They saddled Pinto Bean and Nellie, a mare assigned to Grace, and headed out on a wooded path to a meadow that Wolf knew about. Shadow followed at some distance and seemed to be looking for something.
They reached the meadow, dismounted and hobbled the horses. Wolf strung his bow and placed his new knife in his belt. He started walking back and forth across the meadow with Grace following behind. When he found a rabbit run he motioned for Grace to be perfectly quiet and they slowly walked down the trail. Wolf spotted the faintest of motion from a rabbit. He raised his bow with an arrow in the notch and another in his left hand which gripped the bow. He stood still
