I looked down at the tiny creature nestling in my arms after I finished speaking. I wondered if she was fully grasping what I was trying to convey to her. Of course I couldn't openly say, 'you must get stronger so that I can embrace you and claim you as mine', not yet anyway. All my life, I made sure to keep everyone at arms length whether it be friends, lovers, or family for that matter. Given my position only those strong enough could be let in and as it was right now this little thing wasn't able to properly stand beside me. If I was being honest, she was very similar to my mother. Both were weak and fragile, like little birds that needed to be kept inside cages and away from the world. Maybe if I had done a better job of that with my mother she would still be here.
