I could feel the world beginning to shatter around me. How was it even possible that this was happening right now?
All my life, I had truly done nothing to deserve any of what was given to me. Abuse, harsh words, starvation, and now apparently chronic poisoning. It was all too much and I found myself wondering what exactly I had done to deserve this.
"Are you okay?" Healer Hayes asked, drawing my attention back to him. "I didn’t mean to upset you."
"No," I replied quickly, attempting to smile. "I’m just processing."
"Don’t worry, I will be sure to develop an antidote. Otherwise, Lux won’t let me live to see the light of day. "
Lux?
Maybe he was mistaken in what he was saying. Lux wouldn’t care one way or the other about what happened to me. If I died, he wouldn’t lose sleep
