When the grayish-brown clouds began to lighten, he took stock of belongings and necessities and then cautiously crawled from his cramped hiding place. As the evening before, when he settled down for the night, nothing could be seen moving for miles. This morning, Dakota was aware looks were deceiving. He set off to the north with a brisk pace. A few miles later, he came upon three tall concrete pillars set wide apart with a cement rail across the top of them. Dakota stared up at the ruins of the maglev train support that had run from San Antonio to Minneapolis, touted by the politicians at the time as a way to unclog the frequent traffic snarls on Interstate 35.
