My heart soared with joy. Just imagine, being with Cassian, in the same building!
"I can tell you're thrilled about my offer," Cassian said, his voice serious. "Your excitement was unmistakable earlier."
"Honestly, I can't believe you'd propose this," I said, a smile lighting up my face. "At least we'll be together, and we can get to know each other better, right?"
"I'm giving you a chance because we're married on paper. I hope you can assist me with the company."
"I promise I'll do everything to help," I assured him. "It's my way of repaying your father's kindness."
I glanced at the glass of milk in my hand. "Alright, I'm leaving now."
Cassian only nodded. I turned and headed to my own room.
A curious smile touched my lips. It was still hard to believe what my husband had said. Could it be that he actually had some trust in me?
As I entered my room, a wave of dizziness hit me. I instinctively put a hand to my head.
"What's going on?" I wondered aloud, confused.
Then, the face of the stranger I thought I'd spent the night with a month ago flashed in my mind.
A wave of panic washed over me. What if our one night together had resulted in a pregnancy?
I tried to recall his face, but it remained a blank slate. The events from that night haunted my thoughts, refusing to fade.
I tried to push the memory of the stranger from my mind. It wasn't right, I needed to focus on my husband.
But how could I forget him when my body ached for his touch, for the heat of his kisses, the kind only he could give?
"This isn't right, I have to get that man out of my system."
I flinched, almost dropping the glass of milk in my hand. My brow furrowed as my phone buzzed.
My eyes widened when I saw the number of the man I'd slept with the previous month, my heart leaping into my throat.
"Why is he calling me again?"
I stared at my phone screen, reluctant to answer. My fingers itched to press the button, though.
Finally, I answered the call. "What do you want?"
"I miss you, can we meet?" His voice, when I heard it clearly, sounded strangely like my husband's.
"That's impossible, my husband will be angry," I replied quickly. Silence fell on the other end of the line, making me bite my lower lip.
"You have a husband? But you were still a virgin when I took you that night."
"I'm not joking, I'm really married."
"If you're telling the truth, give me proof, and I won't bother you anymore."
Panic surged through me at his words. That couldn't happen, what if I suddenly got pregnant?
"Wait!" I exclaimed.
"Hmmm?"
"Don't tell me you're single?"
"Like you, I have a wife too, but it's just on paper. I did it because my father asked me to."
My heart pounded at his words. It was like talking to my husband on the other end of the line. I swallowed repeatedly.
"Can you tell me your address?" I asked.
"Why do you want to know my address? I'll give it to you after you give me yours."
"It's not possible, my husband might catch us."
"You love him?"
"I married him because of a debt of gratitude to his father." I answered directly.
"Why?"
I didn't answer his question, simply hanging up. I didn't want to cause any problems with Cassian because of this.
To be sure, I turned off my phone. Earlier, I'd been drowsy from the milk, but now my sleepiness was gone, replaced by anxiety.
I was scared of what the future held. I closed my eyes, fighting to keep them shut until sleep finally took me.
The next morning, I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. It was five in the morning. I jumped out of bed and rushed to the bathroom, showering quickly. I got dressed and left my room, heading to the kitchen.
"Good morning, Ma'am."
"Good morning," I replied cheerfully to a maid.
"Are you going to cook breakfast for sir?"
"Yes."
I asked a maid for help in preparing my husband's favorite dish. It only took a few minutes before we were done. Just then, Cassian woke up.
I excitedly gestured for the maid to set the table. Cassian was surprised to see me in the kitchen.
"Good morning!" I greeted him brightly.
"Good morning, you're up early."
"Yes, and I have a surprise for you."
Cassian's expression turned serious when he heard me. "What is it?"
I turned to the maid, who was now carrying the dish I'd prepared.
"Here is the dish you cooked for sir, ma'am."
The maid placed the food on the table near Cassian.
"Hmmm... you know my favorite?"
"Of course, I found out," I replied with a smile.
I sat beside him, excited for him to try the dish. He picked up a spoon and tasted my cooking.
"So, how does it taste?"
"Hmmm... I love it."
"Really?!" I exclaimed, surprised.
"I didn't know my wife was such a good cook."
My heart skipped a beat at his compliment. I knew I wasn't a great cook, but I wanted to serve him as his wife, so I did everything I could to make his serious world a little brighter.
I could see a genuine smile on Cassian's face. "I hope you like the flavor of my cooking."
"I told you I love it, didn't I?" For the first time, I saw him smile.
"I'm sorry to tell you this, but... you know, you're incredibly handsome when you smile like that."
Cassian's bright smile instantly vanished, replaced by a serious expression. "Come on, let's eat."
He seemed to have retreated back into his usual reserved demeanor, his words carrying a hint of formality.
A pang of disappointment hit me, but I quickly brushed it aside. At least he had enjoyed the food, and I had managed to earn a small victory.
We ate in silence for a while, the only sounds being the clinking of cutlery. I tried to make conversation, but my attempts were met with short, clipped replies.
Finally, Cassian pushed his plate aside. "I need to leave for work."
"Okay," I said, feeling a familiar twinge of loneliness. "Have a good day."
He nodded, but didn't offer a goodbye. I couldn't help but wonder what was going on in his mind. He'd been so different yesterday, almost… kind. But today, he seemed to be retreating back into his shell.
I sighed, pushing my plate away, the taste of my breakfast suddenly bland. It was impossible to read Cassian.
