Destiny’s POV
“So how many covens did you say are going to be at this thing?” I ask for the one millionth time. The answer never changes, yet my brain just isn’t comprehending that I will in fact see my mate tonight.
“There will be four or five covens there, the big one being Waverly Coven. They are the most powerful in their area. I wouldn’t mind showing your powers off to them, but I also don’t want everyone knowing how strong of a pack we are and that we possess one of the few oracles,” Leo answers from the driver’s seat.
We’ve been in his fancy SUV for almost 7 hours and I’m so antsy to get out and stretch. Alpha Leo, Kiara and I are sharing an adjoining room. Kiara insisted on actually sharing one room so we could have a girls night after the masquerade, but goddess who would want to share a room with mates? That would be so freakin awkward. I agreed to adjoining rooms so I can at least shut the door once they start going at it because they WILL, no doubt, go at it. Leo can’t keep his hands off Kiara - I’m actually surprised they have been behaved on the car ride.
“And how long does the dance last til?”
“Desi, you’ve asked that at least five times. The invitation says until midnight, but you know pack parties always go well into the early hours of the morning.. is something bothering you? Did you the moon goddess show you something?” Kiara turns around and asks me - I see Leo look at me in the rear view mirror, probably to gage my reaction.
“No! Of course not! Everything will be perfect tonight. I guess I’m just extra forgetful today,” the words fly from my lips and I even have a hard time believing what I just said.
Kiara raises an eyebrow as she studies me from the passenger seat. I seriously feel like I’m sweating already from her gaze - she knows something is up. For goddess’ sake, I would consider her my best friend, why did I think I could hide something this big from her? I can’t tell her. Especially not with Leo in the car. Can you imagine? He would probably flip s**t and take me back home. Leo is a wonderful alpha, but sometimes I feel like he views me as a precious object rather than an actual person. All he would hear is there is potential for me to lose my powers if I were to act on the mate bond and that’s all it would take for him to take me back home to my little cabin in the woods. No, I won’t tell either of them. If I’m to be without my mate to keep these gifts, I’ll allow myself this one time..this one single time..to see my mate in the flesh. After tonight, I’ll keep my distance and never stray from home. He can’t visit anyway without a formal invitation from Leo and Kiara - and who’s to say he will recognize me as his mate? I know he’s a witch, but I’m not sure if witches feel the mate bond as fiercely as wolves do. I guess tonight will tell.
We drive for another hour and then Leo pulls off onto an unmarked road leading deep into the surrounding forest. This is it. I’m going to be in the same pack lands as my mate in just a short time.
“Okay, ladies. Remember, Alpha Elijah is with Pack Blood Moon and Alpha Hunter is with Pack Crescent Moon. They share a Luna - Luna Reese. Betas are Dax and River,” Leo says from the front in his all business tone. There goes the somewhat comfortable vibe in the car - now all I can feel is the alpha aura resonating off of him as he prepares to meet other alphas. That macho who’s bigger than who, who’s stronger than who crap is so annoying, but that’s alphas for ya!
“Right! And the big coven that will be there is lead by Kai DeVerou, right?” Kiara asks Leo. That name..it sounds familiar..where have I heard it before? And why does is sound so..delicious? What the hell is up with me? How does a name sound delicious?
Maybeeee because it IS delicious. Kai DeVerou? Is that French? Artemis, my lovely wolf, chimes into the conversation unannounced.
Where have you been these past few days? You’ve been eerily quiet. Something you want to tell me? I ask her, but I’m met with silence again. I’ve spoken with her about our mate being here tonight. As soon as I started having visions, I talked to her over and over about it because she’s the only one that can even begin to understand the longing I’ve been feeling.
Artemis is absolutely beautiful - I don’t shift very often because she’s almost as big as an alpha and she’s a little different compared to other wolves. She’s snow white with an iridescent color when her fur shifts. That’s not even the most different part - her eyes glow a bright blue and on each paw and her forehead, a crescent moon is branded into her skin leaving a striking black contrast against the pure white fur. She’s a tad intimidating if you’ve never seen an oracle’s wolf.
I watch out the window as we drive deeper into the forest, our caravan of vehicles in front and behind us. Leo asked his Beta, Wren, to stay behind to keep watch over the pack. Now THAT I was thankful for. You see, Wren lost his mate six years ago in a rogue attack. He came to me almost every single day for an entire year after her death. One thing lead to another and both of us being lonely but unwilling to mate another decided mutually a friends with benefits relationship would be perfect for both of us. We keep our distance in public, but whenever we are needing to let out some steam we usually find our way to one another. I’m not even sure Leo and Kiara know of our little arrangement. I told myself for years if I ever chose to take a mate, I would choose Wren instantly. It’s hard not to develop feelings for someone after five years of sharing intimacy, but also because Wren is just a downright amazing person. And he’s easy on the eyes, that’s for sure. Artemis was even okay with our screwing around - she felt a connection with Wren’s wolf instantly. And his wolf felt the same in return, but I can’t say that’s unusual. Wolves are drawn to Artemis because of what she is and who she is to Selene.
But all of that changed once I started dreaming of my mate. I stopped spending time with Wren - not because I didn’t feel anything for him, but because I felt such a longing for my mate. Once my wolf caught his scent, there was no comparing my mate to anyone else because there WASN’T a comparison. I don’t even know who my mate is and I’ve never met him, yet I know for a fact he is it for me. And I can never have him, not if I want to keep my connection with the moon goddess.
We come to a slow stop in front of a massive - and I mean MASSIVE - pack house. I mean, we’ve got an impressive pack house, but this place.. It looks like it could sleep an entire army! It’s a beautiful log cabin style with beautiful long windows all along the front. It’s three stories with a wrap around porch that makes you want to snuggle up with a book and rocking chair - ugh, remind me to do that when we get home. It’s absolutely lovely - that’s the only word I can use that properly describes this magnificent structure of a home.
Leo and Kiara step out of the vehicle and I follow closely behind, being sure to close my gaping mouth. Waiting at the front of the beautiful wooden double doors, two humongous alphas flank a petite woman, surely their Luna. Her long auburn hair is stunning and would make any woman envious. No wonder she was blessed with two mates - she’s absolutely gorgeous!
“Alpha Leo and Luna Kiara, welcome! Hopefully the trip went well?” The blonde alpha greets us with a friendly smile. The other alpha, the dark haired one, is currently sizing up Leo. They could almost pass for siblings with their dark wavy hair and tan skin tone.
“Alpha Elijah and Alpha Hunter, thank you for welcoming us into your pack lands. Luna Reese, it’s good to meet you,” Leo says as formally as possible with a brief nod.
“Hi, Luna Reese. I’m Luna Kiara, and this is our pack oracle, Destiny. I hope it wasn’t too much to ask for her to share a room next to us - Leo likes to keep her close in case an emergency arises,” Kiara pulls us closer to Luna Reese as the alphas make small talk.
“Ah, yes! The oracle! I’m so excited to finally meet you both! No problem at all, we have more than enough room to accommodate requests! We’ve actually put you on the top floor away from the other alphas. We figured you’d want to keep Destiny close, so we made sure she has her privacy,” Luna Reese lights up as she talks and I already know she has been blessed by the goddess. She radiates light and a certain power.
“Thank you for that,” I say as I give her a genuine smile. I reach out and shake her hand. It’s not every day I meet another moon blessed wolf. I catch a glimpse of her power, confirming my suspicions.
We talk for a few more minutes before they bring us into the pack house and guide us to the top floor. As Luna Reese turns us down a hall, that’s the first whiff I get of that wonderful scent - citrus and bergamot. Oh goddess, please no. Please don’t let him be staying on this floor. Artemis begins pacing back and forth, both of us full of anxiety. This cannot happen here. Before the smell becomes too overwhelming, Luna Reese comes to a stop and opens up a door to a cozy guest suite.
“Destiny, I have you here for your stay with us. Please let me know if you need anything else. Your alpha and luna will be next door, right through that door to your left,” Luna Reese says as she points towards the closed door.
“Thank you, this is perfect! I think I’ll lay down for a bit before getting ready for this evening, Kiki. Thank you again!” The nickname I have for her slips out before I can even process what’s going on and I literally shut the door in Luna Reese and Kiara’s face.
I am so screwed.
