Destiny’s POV
“Hi, I’m River, Beta of Blood Moon Pack. This is Dax, Beta of Crescent Moon Pack. You must be Destiny, right? You’re the oracle of Green Mountain Pack?”
The tall handsome man has a beautiful auburn shade of hair and his smile reminds me of Luna Reese’s. I wonder..
“Nice to meet you both. Yes, I’m Destiny. Forgive me, but are you related to Luna Reese? You are eerily similar.”
“No problem! Yeah, she’s my baby sister,” River says as he chuckles.
“She acts like his mother, though” Dax adds with a grin.
“She acts like all of our mothers - especially after having her own pups now,” River says and then seems to realize I barely know Luna Reese, “So is it true then? You guide wolves to their right paths?” Right to the punch then, it is!
“Um, yeah. I have to touch the person and focus, but I’m able to see different threads of their lives - tell them which paths show the best outcome.”
“Wow, that’s amazing. We’ve heard of oracles, but we don’t have any around the area or in the surrounding packs. Do you ever get visions from the Moon Goddess then?” Dax asks - I can tell he’s soaking this up like a sponge. Both of them are, which isn’t surprising. Oracles are rare and it sounds like I’m the first one they’ve ever met.
“I do, she shows me many different things, but most of the time they can be interpreted many different ways. They aren’t always clear cut, if you know what I mean. They can have many different meanings and can lead to many different outcomes.”
“I’m sure you get asked this all the time, but could you read me before you leave? I’m dying to know what it feels like,” Dax requests. And I do get asked all the time when I’m out of my pack lands, but I don’t mind. That’s what I’m here for and why I’ve been blessed - to help fellow wolves.
“And can I watch? Maybe take some notes? I would love to add it to our library for future knowledge!” River says with way too much excitement - he must be a nerd - and I can’t help but let a laugh slip out. I hope he doesn’t take that as me making fun of him because they both really seem like people I could be friends with.
“Of course, I’d be glad to. We are leaving tomorrow after breakfast, so anytime before then will work. I’m sure you know which room I’m staying in, beings you’re both the betas?”
Then it hits me - bergamot and tangy citrus - full force. Nothing could have prepared me for how strong and overwhelming my mate’s scent would be. I feel my eyes dilate and goosebumps spread over my body, instantly recognizing it’s divine counterpart.
“Destiny? You alright? Hey - you in there?”
“Dax - jeez, don’t be such a d**k. What if she’s having a vision? Just give her a second,” I hear River say. That’s the thing with being an oracle - scents, feelings, emotions - they are all overwhelming.
“I’m sorry, if you’ll excuse me,” I say just as I snap out of whatever trance the mate bond held over me. I need to get out of here and get control of my emotions before I find myself being taken over by natural instinct. I beeline it to a side door leading to a hallway, but not quick enough. Someone grabs me gently by the elbow. No, not someone - my mate. I don’t even have to turn around to know it’s my mate because my arm feels like actual sparks are shooting out of it where he touched me.
“Excuse me, miss. Can I..can I ask your name?”
His voice is like chocolate - smooth, decadent, delicious. Even his lingering touch has my body melting and my mouth salivating. Even with all of that, I still want to run away. I know - I know - once I turn around and our eyes meet, that’s it. I’ll be a goner. So I do the only thing that feels right. Like a good girl - a good oracle - l should scurry off and hide in my room. But I don’t. I turn around and I’m almost knocked off my feet by the intensity of my mate’s gaze. I hear a sharp intake of breath, but I’m too enamored with my mate to even realize it came from me.
“It’s you, isn’t it? This is the mate bond I’m feeling - nothing even compares to it,” the words roll off of his lips and I see relief sweep over him. How could the moon goddess be so cruel? How could she make our paths cross and expect me to turn my back from my perfect mate? Because that’s what he is - absolutely perfect for me. Everything from head to toe has been designed to entice me - everything I look for in a mate.
“Oh! Kai! I was going to introduce you to Destiny, but I see you’ve already met her. She’s Green Mountain’s oracle! I know you’ve met a few in the past, but she’s known to be one of the most powerful oracles around!” Luna Reese’s voice comes from somewhere, but it’s like I have tunnel vision. My sights are only set on my mate - Kai - and his changing expression as realization hits him. If he’s met oracles before, he must know the only downfall of our kind. He must realize we can never complete the mating bond.
“I’m sorry,” I manage to force out before I turn and run, before anyone can see the tears that begin to fall.
I find myself outside, running for my life, running away from everything and everyone, away from the unfairness of it all, away from my mate. Before I know it, I’ve stripped out of my gown and mask and do the only thing I can do to get away. I shift and let Artemis take control.
