“That is something we must prevent at all costs,” the Marquis said fervently. “Amen!” the Foreign Secretary replied. The two men sat talking together for over an hour and, when the Marquis left the Foreign Office, he was looking serious. As he drove home, he was doubting whether even with his proverbial good luck he would be able to find what he knew was a needle in a haystack. He went to luncheon at White’s because he thought that he would see Lord Rearsby there and he was not mistaken. The first Lord Rearsby had been a member of the Club and his son had been put down for membership when he was still quite young.
