Chapter 1 Divorce and Donation
Brown Family Mansion
"Whack!"
Sarah felt the pain before the actual slap was delivered across her pale face. She held her face but stood her ground. After all, it wasn't the first time she had ever received a slap. She already knew the moment her mother-in-law came home in a bad mood that she was going to be the punching bag for her to let out her frustrations. Sarah really hoped this time around that she'd be able to escape such degrading act that night but like always luck was a shitty thing in her life as she was always handed the worst kind of luck by the universe.
"Must you always prove how worthless you are?! How dare you splash that filthy water on my expensive dress? Do you know how much this dress cost?! Even if you spend your whole life cleaning this house, you still won't be able to get me this dress" and of course Sarah already knew the next words to be heard "So useless, you can't get pregnant, you can't keep my son happy, you are the reason why he doesn't come home anymore. Even the servants are far better than you, you street child. Why are you still standing there?! Leave my sight before you stink up my mood even more"
Sarah didn't need to be told twice, she promptly picked up her bucket of water, well after she bumped into the woman from hell a.k.a her mother-in-law, the water had reduced drastically. As she walked away, she saw that some servants had gathered around to watch another episode of 'Humiliate Sarah Brown'. Although at this stage, she knew that she should definitely stop addressing herself as Sarah Brown. That darned surname had brought into her life more trouble than she'd ever thought of.
Sarah became the daughter-in-law of the prestigious Brown family by marrying Michael Brown, the only son and sole heir to the Brown fortune. When this request had initially come up by her parents, she thought that her luck was amazing. She had been in love with Michael for most of her growing up years but he had eye for another woman and so she had been content in loving him all by herself. But when she was told that she would be getting married to him instead of his betrothed, she was beside herself in happiness.
However that happiness was short-lived as she soon quickly discovered that no one was in support of the union, neither her husband nor his family. To make matters worse, Michael had never for once held her hand not to talk of becoming intimate with her. Her in-laws however we're less concerned about the fact that Michael had never looked at her and instead labelled her a barren woman and a stain on the impeccable Brown family.
Sarah touched her face and knew immediately that it was going to leave a mark, more like a handprint. She sighed as she dropped the bucket and mop that she had with her in the supplies room and headed up to her bedroom. Her bedroom was probably the only thing that differentiated her from the other staff. The staff lived in the staff quarters while she lived in the main building with the other members of the family.
Sarah stared at her reflection in the mirror and fought to hold back her tears but they came anyway, not that they had ever listened to her before.
"What sort of life are you living Sarah?" She asked her reflection after she had calmed down a bit, she was about to sit when she heard a knock on her door
"Miss, your attention is needed downstairs by the madam" the servant said and walked away as though coming to call her was a job beneath her status
Sarah simply followed, wondering what the problem was this time around
"Where the heck is she?!" Sarah heard the voice scream from below and hastened her footsteps, if her mother-in-law hated her, Maria, her sister-in-law wished she were dead and she always reminded Sarah that she was a good-for-nothing
"Here I am, what is the matter?" Sarah asked and Maria became even more furious upon seeing her, she had always hated how put together Sarah seemed even when she was insulted or hit, she remained calm and collected as though nothing was wrong
"What is the matter? What is the matter?! You dare to ask me that question huh? You were supposed to have these dresses delivered earlier today for alterations " Maria flung the dresses at Sarah and they fell to the floor
"I wasn't informed of that" Sarah said in confusion, wondering when Maria told her such a thing
"Erin, did you or did you not inform Sarah of what I asked her to do?" Maria asked Erin, another staff whom Sarah hadn't noticed before
"I did inform her ma'am and she said she'd get right to it" Erin said and Sarah then understood what was going on, Maria must have told Erin to inform her of the clothes but Erin most likely forgot and now since she didn't want to face the wrath of Maria all by herself, she decided to lie against her and knowing Maria, she'd believe even a snake over Sarah.
"And when did you hope to get right to it?" Maria asked sarcastically but Sarah refused to give an answer to her and this further enraged Maria
"Have you no mouth?" Sarah heard her mother-in-law's voice
"She won't say a single thing, she must think I'm a joke mother" Maria said
"We'll see just who the joker is, Sarah get out of this house, you can sleep in the garden, I'm sure a night out is what you need" Sarah still didn't say anything, she simply clenched her fist and went out, the ringing of her phone startled her and she quickly brought it out
Mom calling
Sarah sighed as she picked the call
"Hello Mom"
"Sarah, how many times should I ask for money before you send us some? Your father's business isn't doing too well and you know that. Do you want to see us living on the street before you help?"
"Mom, I've told you I have no money"
"How can you say that? You are the daughter-in-law of the Brown family and you are telling me money is a problem for you, do you know how ironical that sounds?"
"I said I have no money to give you Mom, I have nothing" frustration finally caught up with Sarah as she hung up without waiting for her Mother to say another word
She walked briskly to the garden and wondered how she was going to stay out all night without freezing to death. She found a hidden spot further away from the garden and decided to stay there and despite the cold, she ended up falling asleep.
Michael returned later that night, it was the first time in a while that he came home and his mother was happy to see him
"Oh, Michael, it's really good to see you home, you hardly pay your poor mother any attention"
"That is because I'm busy" he looked around and saw a maid "you there, call me Sarah, tell her I'll be waiting for her in her room" he said and went away without waiting for a response
"What are you waiting for, go and call that wretched thing from the garden, she got lucky tonight" the maid hurried to call Sarah
The constant tapping woke Sarah out of her cold sleep and she felt a little annoyed that her sleep was interrupted, she could not keep the annoyance from her voice
"What is it?" she asked
"Master Michael is around and requesting to see you in your room" the maid said and Sarah's eyes brightened a little at the mention of her husband's arrival and she quickly stood up and went into the house and made her way to her room where Michael was waiting
"Michael" she called when she saw him and he frowned when he saw her face
"What happened to your face?" He asked
"Uhh, it's nothing" she didn't want any more drama besides Michael had never showed any concern towards her "Why did you want to see me?" She asked
Michael didn't answer her immediately and if Sarah could read him correctly, he seemed to be avoiding her eyes and this made her even more confused and then her eyes were drawn to the envelope in his hands and when Michael saw that she had taken note of what he held, he cleared his throat
"There's no simple way to say this so I'll just say it instead" he gave her the envelope and before she could open it, he said the words that froze up her heart "Let's get divorced" he said and she slowly looked up to him before she opened the envelope and she thought she was going to run mad when she read it fully. Her husband, the man for whom she endured insults and assaults from his family wasn't just divorcing her, he wanted her to donate her eggs to the woman he loved because she couldn't have children!
