Chapter 1
I narrowed my eyes at Nate, mentally calculating all the possible ways that he would attack me and all the best ways that I could attack him. I heard a growl rumbling from the base of his throat as he did the same for me.
I crouched defensively, preparing to attack him. If wants to wait for me to initiate the attack then I would grant him that. I wasn't afraid to do so.
A sick smile crept up to my opponent's lips and he rolled back his shoulders and putting both of his fists in front of him, knowing full well that I was about to attack him. He gestured me to come at him before clenching his fists painfully tight.
"You should really stop smiling as that" I taunted him and that made his smile grew wider. Without wasting any more time, I lurched myself at him.
My wolf yipped in joy, urging me to go faster and I did, kicking my feet underneath me to go as fast as I could. I feigned to attack him on his right leg and he fell for my bait just like I had expected. He went to grab me but then I quickly changed course and went to grab his left leg and pulled it up, toppling him on the ground.
A smirk of victory graced my lips when I heard him grunt against the ground but I didn't let myself get too carried away as I didn't fully win yet.
Nate tried to twist his leg so he could kick me off. Well, this was expected. I held his leg down and then pinned my body against his, holding him there. Nate struggled beneath me, trying to find the tiniest chance to escape from my grip but I made sure I never left any chance for him.
My fellow packmates started to cheer my name and then started to count from ten as I held Nate down. I smiled knowing that Nate wouldn't win this one on one combat.
I have strived so hard for this day.
"And the winner is Irina" I heard Jason say and I sucked in a deep breath before scampering off from Nate. I raised from the ground and looked at everyone who is in front of me.
Everyone looked at me with thrilled eyes and I gleamed up at them and raised my hand in victory erupting the small group of wolves to cheer for me loudly.
The little girls were excited to see me fighting off the big bad wolf single-handedly and I hoped that this would encourage them to master self-defense skills at a very young age.
I looked down at my opponent, who was my brother, and offered my hand at him to help him up, "That's a good match though" I said.
Nate looked up at me and smirked but he took the hand that I had offered to him and let me pull him up to his feet. The crowd once again cheered for us.
"Proud of you little sis" Nate kissed my forehead and I relished the compliment that I had received from him. I knew for a fact that my brother didn't go easy on me. He always trained me without an ounce of mercy.
So to hear that my brother is proud of me is already a big milestone in my life. And hopefully, I would reach greater milestones than this.
"It makes me feel good that our pack is blessed to have warrior wolves like you both" Jason said. Both I and my brother broke our eye contact at the same time to look at our beta.
Beta Jason was probably in his forties now but still, he doesn't look like he had passed a day over thirty. He was the one who saw the potential in both me and my brother and had picked us to be warrior wolves of our pack.
"Oh you know that without you, we wouldn't even be warriors in the first place" My brother smiled at Jason and bowed his head in respect in front of him. And I copied my brother, bowing as well.
It was true, without Jason we wouldn't be here.
"Good that you remember that," Jason said, patting my brother's shoulder proudly. Jason then looked at the group of people who had come to watch us combat, "Alright, the game is over guys, go back to your houses. It's still school night" He commanded, clapping his hands together at once.
A wave of disapproval moans was here but Jason kept his face stern as ever, "No fussing" He held up his finger and shook it as he talked, "Go back right now" He commanded once again and this time everyone tucked their tails between their legs and did as what Jason had said.
No one disobeys Jason and gets away with it.
"Alright kids, see you tomorrow," Jason said before excusing himself. I watched him walk away from us until he disappeared from the line of my vision.
"Let's go" I heard my brother grunt and I turned my head to look at him, "My leg is killing me, thanks to you" Nate playfully glared at me and I smirked.
"Your welcome" I sang in sarcasm.
We both laughed at each other before starting to run towards our house. We belong in BloodMoon Pack. The largest pack in Canada to be exact.
Alpha Lucas has done a great job in shaping everyone in our pack with kindness and strength. Our luna has been the greatest to us even though she is still a human. They are blessed with a cute little boy, Lorenzo, who is ten years old, and a little girl, Leila who just turned four.
We reached our house in a record of time. We both stepped in and my brother's stomach grumbled loudly, "Hey mom, what's for dinner tonight?" He asked as we walked towards the kitchen.
Something fell down from the kitchen and it sounded like a plate to me. My brother and I exchanged a worried glance, "I don't know, Nate" My mother grunted from the kitchen, "Why don't you make something for yourself" She sneered.
Again my brother and I exchanged a glance but this time we both looked in bewilderment at each other. My mother is usually a calm and collected person so something must have happened that she is literally throwing fireballs at everyone.
Did she and dad get into a fight or something? Nate mind linked me, too afraid to ask me this out loud.
I shook my head at him, I don't know but it looks like that to me as well, I mind linked back, frowning.
Before any of us could muster up enough courage to ask her what's wrong, my mother emerged from the kitchen and strode towards us with her hands clenched in fists at her sides.
She raised her accusing finger at the both of us, "Your father forgot that today is our anniversary" She growled under her breath, trying to rein in her wolf.
I was watching my mother with wide eyes, not knowing what to tell her. "Oh man," I heard Nate mumble under his breath.
My mother was breathing through her nose, "He is doomed for the rest of his life" She vowed, her nose flaring in fury.
I cleared my throat and my mother's eyes zeroed solely on me. I swallowed my saliva nervously and raised both of my hands in front of me in surrender, "Maybe something important came up, mom" I started, trying to ease the tension in this room, "He is the Gamma, after all, let's not do something hasty here" I watched her eyes soften for a split second but as soon as it does we felt a presence.
Right timing, daddy.
"Here he comes" My brother whistled under his breath and both me and my mother stiffened together.
"Mom, be patient please" I begged but she simply shook her head at me, looking like she was about to pounce at my father the minute step inside the house.
"Hello everyone" My father sang happily, oblivious to the fact that my mother was fuming like a volcanic mountain that is about to erupt.
Moon Goddess, please save us all.
"Dad, are you forgetting something?" Nate started, his voice was thick with tension and if my father didn't notice that, I don't know if he could survive this night or now.
"Forgetting what?" My father asked, completely clueless as he hanged his coat on the hook.
Your anniversary, I mind linked quickly.
My father didn't look surprised, instead, a beautiful smiled graced his lips, "Of course I didn't forget what day is today" He said looking meaningfully at my mother.
My mother blushed under my father's gaze meanwhile me and Nate exchanged a glance, smiling knowingly at each other. This was the woman who was set on saying that she was going to doom the rest of my father's life, a few minutes ago.
My father put his hand inside his pocket and pulled out a small jewelry box. My mother's face lightened up at the sight of that box and she gasped, "Oh my god" She looked up at my father before her eyes zeroing on the box again, "I knew you wouldn't forget it" She said, crossing the distance between then in a flash.
My father smiled and opened the box, revealing a cute necklace inside there. My mother blushed adorably as my father helped her to put it on her neck.
Nate and I just watched the duo in silence, happy to see them happy together. This is how our life is. We didn't have much with us but we've got each other. And that is more than enough for us.
"Okay, so what's for dinner today?" My father asked after my mother said her thanks.
My mother was running her finger over the necklace when my father asked her that. I watched in amusement as my mother's hand literally froze and she looked up at my father, "Um, about that-" My mother squirmed uncomfortably, "I didn't cook today" She shook her head, smiling apologetically at him.
One of the best things about my father is that he never gets angry about anything. He believes that everything could be solved while remaining calm. The exact opposite of my mother exactly.
"That's alright," My father said just like I had expected, "We can go out and have dinner out today. It's a day to celebrate after all" He added, making sure he never place blame on my mother.
It was our time to gleam up at our father now. "I can't remember the last time we did that," I said, glancing at Nate who nodded his head at me in agreement.
"Okay, then what are you waiting for?" My father asked, looking at the both of us expectantly, "We are not obviously going to go with two muddy teenagers are we?" He asked, raising his eyebrow at us.
Both Nate and I looked at each other in confusion before realization dawned upon us, "Oh sorry about that" I said, looking down at our dirty clothes, "We will get ready in no time" I promised before running up to my room in a flash to get ready.
I heard my brother run-up to his room as well. A few minutes later, we both walked out of our respective rooms to our parents before all of us get into the only car that we owned.
It was a tradition for us to go to Blair's restaurant to celebrate anything in our family but it had been years since we did that. Blair is Beta Jason's wife.
We reached the restaurant in a record of the time and my eyes landed on a specific person when we stepped into the restaurant.
"Oh, I can't believe I have to see these faces again today" I heard Jason say, intentionally louder even though we could hear him even if he had whispered it.
"What can I say, Beta Jason, it is a small world" I winked at him.
"Love you too, Jason," Nate said at the same time.
We all exchanged a silent glance for a second before bursting into peals of laughter. The rest of the night consisted of a lot of food and a lot of laughters. It was one of the most memorable nights for us.
"Don't forget about the upcoming ball" Beta Jason reminded my father before we exited the restaurant.
"What ball daddy?" I asked, looking at him in confusion.
"Apparently there is a ball in London and everyone who hasn't found their mate is supposed to go there," My father said as he started his car.
London?
"Are we going?" My brother asked.
My father nodded his head, "Yes, you will be going as you're almost twenty now" He said then he looked at me via the rearview mirror, "Irina on the other hand wouldn't be as she is not eighteen yet" My father said shaking his head at me.
My heart literally dropped but I knew that I had to say something so I can get to see London as well, "Dad, okay first of all" I started after sucking in a deep breath, "I want to make it clear that I have no intention of finding my mate now but this is London that we are talking about" The words flowed out my mouth so fluidly, "I haven't been to London" I said, after catching my breath.
"So do I" My mother butted in.
I fought back a smile at that. My father had this bad habit of granting everything my mother wanted, "So please, let's make it our family trip?" I asked, knowing with my mother on my side, I could convince my father easily.
"Yeah please," My mother butted in once again.
My father sighed, "I will see what I can do" Was all he said before he stomped on the gas pedal, speeding towards our house.
