Chapter 1
Sitting in front of two men isn't my idea of a good day, especially when they are asking questions about my family. They are wearing suits and seem to be all business, but something was different about these two. When they had come into the orphanage they asked to see me alone.
“What happened to your family? Do you have any known living relatives?”
“No, all of my family is dead. The only family my parents had talked about were my grandparents and they died when I was a baby in a house fire.”
“But what about your parents?”
“They died about a year ago in a car accident. A tractor trailer hit them on the interstate.”
The only thing I could think about was how much I missed them, some of the other kids started running in at this time and they shook my hand and left. The tall one was asking all the questions, while the other was shorter but didn't say much. Their names were agents Ross and Mickal. Agent Ross was nice and seemed to have a caring look as he asked me the questions. Agent Mickel on the other hand didn't seem to care much about anything, he always had a scowl on his face. As nun Agnes came in and spoke to everyone about what we were learning today, I looked around the room to see some of the other kids staring at me. I felt uneasy and sunk in my chair, nun Agnes spoke loud and clear about the math that was on the board.
Once class was over and she dismissed us from our seats, some of the other kids shoved my books on the floor forcing me to bend down and grab them but then they kicked them around the room saying that I was nothing and would never get adopted. All I wanted was to get out of this place, tears started streaming down my face as I tried to hold them back. The other kids left the room and I went to grab my things, someone walked into the room as I crawled around the floor to get my books.
“Just leave me alone. Haven't you had enough for now?”
When I looked up to see who it was, to my surprise, Agent Mickel got down, whipped the tears from my face and helped me pick up the rest of my things. I wanted to ask him why he was helping me after he seemed to not care about me. Instead I let it go, he walked me to my last class for the day and stopped me before I walked in.
“I will talk to the Nuns about what the other kids are doing, but for now stay away from them. I will be back in a couple of days.”
I nodded to him as a thank you and finally got a smile on his face and hugged me. I was shocked that the mean looking guy had a heart and hugged me. The world was full of surprises, I knew that for a fact. When I walked into the room the other kids looked at me like an alien. I ignored them and went to my seat, I looked back behind me to see Agent Mickel talking to one of the nuns, I couldn't see who he was talking to but I knew he was telling them about me.
A couple of days later he came back alone, like he had said he would, he came right up to me and sat across from me on the table. He looked down at my paper and saw that I was drawing. The picture was of a girl fighting dark figures in a hallway.
“That looks good, what is it about?”
“It's a girl fighting these dark figures, her fears, she is trying to overcome them.”
“It looks really good, but I need you to go pack your things.”
I rushed inside and up the stairs to my bunk bed, grabbing all of my things thinking I was getting adopted, but oh how I was wrong. Throwing things into bags and rushing down to see him standing there holding out his hand, I gave him a couple of the bags and he led me out. I had such a big smile on my face thinking I was finally going to a good home.
All of the other kids stared at me as I walked by, I waved goodbye to the few that had been nice to me, but none of them were friends. He took me to a nice black SUV and opened the door for me to get in. I climbed in and buckled up, safety first, he put all of my bags in the back and got in. When he started it up it had a low rumble, he turned the radio down and turned to me.
“Are you ready for a new life?”
“Yes”
