I sit on the rocks and shake the water out of my ears. Shading my eyes with my hand, I look up the cliff and shout out to him. Alistair doesn’t hear me. He stands with his toes curled around the edge of the twenty-foot drop, looking down at the turbulent waters below. This is our second day at the creek, and though he must have jumped off that cliff a hundred times already, I still feel that knot in my stomach every time I see his thin white body shooting down feet first into the deep water below. There’s a lot of rocks down there. When he jumps, I hold my breath until I see his blond head popping out of the water. In graceful strokes, he swims back to shore. Back to me.
