Chapter 10 Five years earlier Frank ran as fast as he could, skipping over fallen branches as a whistling bullet flew over his head, hitting a tree in front of him and spraying splinters of bark onto the sodden ground. He swore under his breath and kept running, moving in an uneven line so as not to make himself an easy target. Clocking a ditch yards ahead of him, he made it his goal. As soon as he was near enough, he dived, his body curling into a fetal position as he rolled into the shallow, muddy water at the bottom of the trench. He lay there for a moment, listening hard, but could hear nothing except for his own heavy breathing and the distant bark of the dog.
